    Remote car Starter

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,
Winter is coming! And up in the great white north, it gets pretty damn cold.
So, I was thinking of a remote starter to allow my RS to heat up a bit.

Has anyone installed a remote starter in their RS3? If so, could you pls provide some details, like Remote starter model, any issues, any cool features, etc.

    Thanks

I have a remote starter....... Step one tell wife to start car, and done. Models go by various names. Long term issue may be divorce for some. She cooks and does laundry also etc. No problem glad to help you out.

Usually talk to the dealership they will recommend a place around your location that they usually send their customers to.

I've not installed one in the RS3 yet. But I have used Viper Smart Start in two of my previous Nissan Titan builds. It works quite well and Viper is constantly updating the software for the app. You can have it installed with just key fobs or pay for the cellular module (definitely worth it) and gain the ability to start your car from anywhere with your smartphone. Also gives you the ability to lock and unlock the doors which can be quite handy. Insurance companies like it as well because the model with cell service also lets you track the vehicle so you may get a discount if you give your provider a call.

when i looked into it dealership mentioned that its not possible because of space. They said previously plastic started to melt. Viper makes some solid unit as Bombers mentioned.

Hopefully start the day off with a smile, I've had 4 Viper units previously and have never had an issue with any of them. Used them all the time when i resided in Winterpeg Manitoba.

Man you are making me doubt, I'll have to check because mine came with a block heater; dealer installed prior to me buying.

Everything already exists within the RS3 to have remote start, I've been trying to crack how to enable it through a double tap on the key fob but haven't put much time into it. Now that it's starting to be into the twenties in the morning I'm sure I will figure it out soon and I will post up a how to.

From most if not all auto starter companies (viper, compustar, etc...) all currently require a spare key to be left inside the car and coiled around the antenna wire to “create” and simulate the keyless go to start the vehicle remotely.

It’s the additional purchase and/or loss of a key which needs to be done at the dealership kind of sucks.

Compustar with drone mobile. Had an installer come to my house and put it in in about an hour. Have the ability to access my car from anywhere with my phone and I can use my tripple tap my lock button to start it as well. With the wire harness, the installer only has to tap into like 3 wires on the oem harness, so not invasive at all and easily removed.

Did that on my S4. Worked well.

I was told that these engines should only do a minimal warmup before driving and that lots of idling is very bad.

Did you have to give up a fob for the integration? I know on my A4 I did, but had a valet key that worked for it. The RS3 doesn't have that as far as I know.

I think I heard that about idling as well but it didn’t make sense to me how idling can be bad. Can someone please chime in?

My fortin required a key for install. They now have the ability for keyless install if you don't have virtual cockpit.

I'd like to know the mechanical reasoning behind this as well, not sure why it would be "VERY bad" to idle a car.

I can attest that the 2.5L doesn't warm up for shit until you actually drive it (and even then, real slowly). That's the deal with modern turbo engines, they need load to warm up. I think remote car starters are basically a great way to waste gas.

Its not always for heat, I used mine all summer for A/C.

Agreed, cools the car down a bit in summer and certainly you could have nice warm seats if you start it 2-3 minutes before you drive off. You are using next to no gas either.

I had a valet key with my S4. So I was fine, but yes you would need to give up one key for integrating into the console.

The only thing I can think of that would be bad for idling an engine would be any excessive fuel washing out the oil if it's done excessivly. However modern cars are much leaner on startup than older fuel injected cars. Start a car from the early 90's and it'll make your eyes water on startup it's so rich. So I'd say that's not a huge concern, unless you're idling it 30 minutes every morning and you're not taking long trips to allow the moisture in the oil to burn off.

IMO I warm up all my cars for at least 10 minutes in cooler weather and about 2-5 in warm weather. Oil does not lubricate as effectively when cold. Furthermore, these cars do not like to shift well with a cold transmission especially in stop and go traffic.

Hello everyone I've been looking info about this online, and people claim that if you use a remote starter, you would need to keep a spare key inside all the time is it true? Which one have you guys used? I own a 2015 a3

You can do it without a key, check fortin.ca, they have a kit that doesn't use a key.
