The oil needs to meet vw502 spec. For castrol its the 0w40 euro. For m1 its also 0w40. Id get the m1. You can get it in 5qt jugs from walmart for 25 bucks or less

Hi I. M in New Zealand, I don't think we got 0w 40 in store, will the 5w 30 castrol edge still works fine?

Ahhh. You get different products there. It should be the 5w40. The bottle should say vw502 on back

Anything with VW502. I prefer the Mobil 1 0w-40 FS (formerly called European Formula), but if the bottle says VW502, it is good to go.

Lots of guys swear by the Mob 1 products, but also those that swear at them. I think they are decent, but many other oils out there just as good. If you are doing a 5k oil change,it probably doesn't matter. I would use the higher viscosity oil if you have had any oil consumption issues, as long as it id not to cold outside. Not sure of weather in NZ .Summer soon!

Funny, I always thought of M1 as the "discount" go to for synthetic oil, but after buying our Macan, I was surprised by Porsche's standing recommendation to use it across their model lines.

They are decent enough for regular drivers as long as you don't beat your car on a track.

The 911 guys use the m1 5w50 for serious track duty as recommended and approved by Porsche. I run the factory fill m1 0w40 in mine.

I personally use Liqui Moly or Motul Specific in 5w-40. some have had "consumption" issue with M1

Liquid Moly works exceptionally well for me as well. I’ve learned to stay away from M1 due to rapid oil level decreasing.

Well its how much money they want to pay Porsche to put their logo on the cap is all that is.

I don't think M1 is discount oil. i don't know if anyone has ever looked at how the different variations of oil is produced and where it is made and quantity will affect pricing. I swear by M1. I have used it in every Audi and VW i have owned except for my TDI. I have had 0 issues with it what so ever. I burn 0 oil in my 14 S4. But i think thats because i broke it in correctly.
I tried to try Liqu Moly and it was backorder like a B from ECS and they couldn't fill the order for weeks. So i said hell with them canceled the order and went back to M1.

I change mine at 5K or once a year which ever comes first. Usually its once a year. But maybe if i was going to the track i would look for something thicker. But if it meets the 502 guidelines its as good as the next one.

According to a Liqui Moly rep, the Leichtlauf High Tech replaced that and is what he recommended.

Synthoil is not approved for VW 502 spec, only recommended.

In the past I've used Motul Specific 5W-40. Car ran great, never burned a drop.

I recently switched to Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40. I switched because I wanted to order oil from FCP Euro. FCP offers a lifetime replacement guarantee on all products that they sell. This means you basically only have to buy oil once. When it's time for another oil change, order up a new kit and change the oil. Dump the old oil into the new empty bottles and send it back to them for a full refund. Send back your old used crush washers and oil filters too. It's all covered, as long as you originally purchased it from them.

I think mobile 1 is a good oil and I see a lot of people are using it. I see someone saying to buy the 5qt but what are most of you pouring in... about 7qts total? I guess Walmart is a good place to get it but what about the filter.. do they also carry them?

Mobil1 0-40 is all you need. oil/filter change every 5k. Had a GTI with 200k, only used that oil, ran great but can't say the same for rest of the car

FCP has a completely inclusive policy that all parts they sell are warrantied for life. In general i'd guess they have done well with this policy.

That said there are the .1% of folks who will do things like send back spark plugs that still look almost new that have 30K miles on them because they want a new set. FCP has posted pictures of the plugs and they did send out replacements.

Or sending back used oil for new oil although if I were FCP i'd force the customer to send a used oil analysis with it stating the oil is really completely used up. I suspect most UOAs would show the oil still has 50% of so life left in it.

So yes, you can technically apparently get away with draining out your old oil and ship it back for new oil.

Read the back label, guys. VW502 should be there.

Within brands, even full synthetics have different additives. Not all Mobil 1 synthetic is the same.

For Mobile 1, you want the one labled "FS." This is a rebranding of what they formerly called "European Car Formula", which may still be on some vendors' shelves. Look for FS or European Car Formula. Identical and VW502 approved.

What kind of a dbag would send back used oil. Is 70 bucks really that important that your willing to be "that guy" that takes advantage of a solid policy.

I'm just floored that the return policy would apply to normal maintenance consumables, wow.

I haven't done it, but that is their policy. It literally covers everything, assuming it can be sent back. So something that gets fully used (think gas additive, aerosol can, etc) can't be sent back, since it is gone. Seems like a no-brainer for brakes, wiper blades, etc.

I just ordered 5 cases of M1 0-40w "european car” oil from Costco. 6 quarts for $28 with free shipping.

And regarding Porsche selecting this oil based on a marketing agreement with M1, please. Do you really think Porsche would assume such a massive warranty liability on their cars for this if the oil wasn’t up to snuff?

    I don’t.

Could be.. But nowhwere on the bottle does it state that.. Since I am in Italy where it is full of diesel cars and thus diesel oil, I was overly cautious to check and make sure I did not see “diesel” written anywhere.. It seems (from my quick research) as if it is not a problem regardless as long as it meets API SN, which is does..
