    When to activate the abs pump while bleeding the brakes

    So I’m gonna be flushing my fluid and I’m pretty sure it’s original so I want to flush the abs pump as well. I’ve been trying to figure out when to do it but cannot seem to figure it out.

    Do I open the first bleeder see new fluid and then do it?

    Do I do all of them then do it then reflush?

    Do it do it while opening every bleeder?

    Any thoughts or suggestions??

    Typically the Bosch systems you bleed the brakes with a pressure bleeder, then activate the dump valves and pump motor in the ABS unit for each wheel using VCDS and then bleed the lines again. If you are manual tranny, you should also bleed the clutch as it uses the brake fluid reservoir. I read this procedure (link below) and it sounds right based on my recollections from several years ago. Recommend that you not push the brake pedal to the floor if doing any manual bleeding. Use short strokes and make sure the pedal is coming all the way up to the top of its travel each time you pump and do not run the reservoir dry! This is most easily done with two people.

    Thanks Brillo that was pretty helpful to read, will be tackling it sometime this week


    So it does seem to be that I have to do it all then do it, maybe I should do it with cheap fluid first? I only have a liter of the Audi fluid

    To start, siphon all the old fluid out of the reservoir and immediately refill with fresh fluid. That way you will minimize the mixing of old and new fluid. (I realize this is a bit of a no-brainer but after siphoning the oil out just don't activate the brake pedal or you could suck in air.) Then do the clutch before moving on to the brakes.

    FWIW - Pentosin 4LV works well on these cars (and Pentosin most likely produces the Audi labeled fluid). You can pick it up at most local auto parts stores. I know Autozone carries it. Make sure it’s the “LV” or low viscosity version (for abs) and not their Super DOT 4 fluid.

    Caution: VW used to recommend FMVSS 116 DOT 4 brake fluid. Your service manual and the fluid cap probably says super DOT 4. For cars model year 2006 and newer they recommend VW specification 501 14 brake fluid. VW spec 501 14 fluid is supposed to have lower cold viscosity compared to DOT 4 fluid which results in faster response of the fluid through the tiny holes of the ESP/ABS (anti slip regulation/antilock brake) system. The problem is that I don't know anyone who sells this new spec fluid and if you go to the dealer they will hand you a bottle of DOT 4 fluid for twice the price. ATE SL.6 and Pentosin DOT4 LV (low viscosity) are probably the closest to the VW spec fluid because they are advertised to be thinner specifically for ABS/ESP systems. If you have an earlier car without ESP stability control I don't think it will make any difference and VW 501 14 fluid is fully compatible with DOT 3/4.


    Our cars have great OEM brakes,model dependent.I know Wolfie does even without ceramic pads.My guru tech. buddy who also does my yearly RWC check for registration said they produced the highest reading he has seen on his electronic pedal effort/deceleration metering equipment that is part of the yearly test.V. impressed ,even better than Stealth's ( see my sig )
    But no,it should be said that he doesn't do Ferrari's, Porsche or AMG etc....
    So aiming for100% on our brake components should be done for sure ,like.........correct viscosity...

    VW 501 14 is the VW manufacturer standard for DOT 4 low viscosity compliant fluid. The DOT 4 specification is listed right on the front of the label. The Pentosin 4LV manufacturer spec sheet also shows it as OE spec for VW/Audi B000750M2 - the same reference on the Audi VW 501 14 fluid can. I’ve done fluid changes with both and have had the Pentosin in for the last 18 months with no perceptible difference from the prior OE fluid change. I have an ‘08 but the Pentosin LV fluid is reverse compatible with the older models.

    Interesting,pentosin is rare but available over here and damn expensive.Ive imported their products from FCP etc when Ive really needed high performance fluids...
    I've been using Bosch for the last few cars I did brake jobs on.
