Hello, I am currently driving a 2008 a4 s-line, I want to lower it and get different wheels and was wondering what wheel and suspension combos others have used, i'm leaning towards lowering springs because of financials, I want to see what's being done out there, pictures are welcomed by the way all work will be done by me

I highly suggest a cup kit (matched shocks and springs) over a "budget" coil over kit.

Vogtland, H&R, Stasis (if you can find them), etc

I have personally run ST coilovers, Vogtland cup kit, and a new old stock Statis kit. Both cup kits outperformed the STs, both on the street and on the local road course.

    Perfect stance IMO.

To add, I would not just swap the springs on your tired, 10+ year old stock shocks to save a buck. This holds doubly true if you’re paying a shop to install them. Do it right or do it twice is what they say.

You can’t go wrong with a solid cup kit, but something like ST coilovers are great too, not pricey, and are adjustable so you can dial in your height how you want it. I ran those before I bagged my car, and I would pick up a set again in a heartbeat. There’s a used set right now on the classifieds too I believe

If they can intro them at 300 bucks and still make a profit, I think we both know the answer to that 😉

    +1

When you put lowering springs on the stock struts the struts will wear out quicker because there is not as much suspension travel. If you wait to change the struts the springs will have most of the weight of the car on it. So by the time you're going to replace the struts the springs will be flattened out and need to be replaced. Replacing all those parts plus paying for installation will probably add up to the cost of the coilovers. Just my thoughts.

What can you tell me about the cup kit? Is that swapping the B5 rear perches to get about an inch of drop in the rear?

Cup kit=lowering spring and shock combo. It has nothing to do with perches.

More please, I thought using the B5 cups with stock components will lower the rear about an inch. I already am running the H & R sport springs and I love them, but I have that dreaded "rake" that I would love to get rid of.

B5 spring pearches will lower the front more, not the rear.

And believe it or not, your car is probably level. The fender arches are what make the front look higher.

    THIS.

The fenders are different shapes front to rear. Instead of measuring from the ground to the fender, measure from the center of the wheel to the top of the fender.

I loved the Vogtland set up. I dont think you can beat it in terms of price, handling, and comfort by anything that its 3x-4x as expensive.

Ive had ST coil overs, with and without the upgraded Hyperco springs. They are garage. Ride poorly, handle poorly, and (as with any coil over) a PITA to set - I mean is anyone really corner balancing a car if youre running $700 coilovers..........

Did you feel like the rear springs were too soft on the vogtland cup kit? I know some cheaper kits the tears tend to sag and vogtland has a stiffer rear spring combo on their gt coilover set

Absolutely not. The Vogtland cup kit isnt a "budget" coilover that can be compared to a Riceland, JOM, etc. Its QUALITY german made part that comes with a lifetime warranty.

The GT coils probably have a stiffer spring as the dampeners are different from the shocks/struts with the cup kit.

I put 50K miles on the Vogtland kit before I parted my car and sold them to someone in Canada. They are still on the road today. It was just as good on mile 49,999 as it was on mile 1.

Don’t buy cheap 3-400 coilovers if you care anything about how your car actually rides. I can almost guarantee that even B4 Bilstein sport shocks and HR springs will ride better and your cost is only about 500 bucks.

A quality spring and shock kit will out perform most of the budget coilovers and I say most because I don’t like speaking in absolutes. If all you care about is being low and don’t care if they last a couple years or not or how they ride, cheap coilovers might be fine.

I would never buy cheap coilovers when there there are so many proven spring and shock combos out there. Plus, who ever adjusts their coilovers once the set them anyway? 😀

Vogtland are great example of German excellence,go for the GT as the standard springs are way too soft.I ended up putting hypercoils in the rear, made lower adapters out of HDPE breadboard.NOTE many shocks mist oil early in their life, this is normal and stops after a while...
