I just got my first Audi. I got a 2011 A6 with the supercharged 3.0 V6 with 87,000 miles and I love the car so far. I haven't had to fill the tank yet but I'm curious if preimum 91 octane unleaded gas is necessary? Will regualr 87 octane unleaded work the same or can the lower octane cause some damage?

    Thanks

It is written in the manual and the gas door, 91 is the minimum octane you could put in this car. Anything less and the car will not run at its optimum level. Always go with the manufactured recommended fluids.

Agreed. I've been told all my life that Lower octane in high performance high temperature engines can pre-detonate and cause knock issues. Not sure how accurate that is though.

The engine is tuned for 91 octane. 93 is also fine, but don't waste money on 95. And for God's sake, don't use anything less than 91. My wife accidentally put regular gas in my old B7 A4, and it killed the power and gas mileage. ended up spending more money due to poor mileage than the cost of the premium. And like others have said, it's bad for your engine. If you have a Costoc nearby, get your gas there. I'm also in VA and the price of premium gas is the same at Costco as regular unleaded anywhere else. So that alone will pay for the membership.
