Help with fault code/DTC: Steering Angle Sensor (G85)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been getting this annoying DTC everytime I turn my car on. I have cleared it with VCDS but it comes right back again next time I start the car. Does anyone know how to tackle this? Some ideas I have are:

    1. Recalibrate the G85 sensor (steering angle sensor) with VCDS.
    2. Unplug the clock spring/steering angle sensor and ensure plug is not damaged.
    3. Replace the expensive clock spring/steering angle sensor ($$$)

Or I wonder if this could be a bigger problem like a wheel bearing, or alignment off. But I don't think so. I also wonder if a low batter voltage could cause this? My battery is original, and I am due to replace it before the winter hits.

I appreciate any help or advice you can give. Has anyone dealt with this code? Here is what Rosstech suggests:

Here is the main code from the Steering wheel module:

    Code:

What does the g85 read at straight ahead 0deg? Will it go out if you turn the wheel and then drive?

Reads 0 degrees when wheel is straight. It appears to give normal readings when I turn the wheel left or right while parked. I have not driven then car and checked this. I get the DTC IMMEDIATELY when turning the car on, or only a few seconds after starting to roll.

So maybe I should try to check the live reading from the G85 as the code hits?

Anyone know if it is even possible to separate the G85 sensor from this whole assembly?

I read the live result from VCDS as I turned the car on today. Readings were normal. The code appeared as I was turning the wheel with over 200 degrees of position, but the code always says 42.5 degree steering angle! I cleared the code while driving and it immediately comes back with 42.5 degree steering angle.

I did try this calibration, several times today, and the error keeps coming back with the exact same code! 42.5 degrees! Seems to be when I turn the wheel right.

Anyone know what a bad clock spring would look like? Could a bad clock spring be throwing this error code? I took my steering wheel off to inspect. Keep in mind, this has been making a slight squeaking sound for over a year now. I found grease outside of where it should be, even a little was on the back of the steering wheel.

Bump. I bought a used clockspring (still installed in entire stalk assembly) from eBay for $90. I messaged a few buyers and made sure to get one where the airbag did not deploy. I have not installed yet. I am still faithfully getting the same error code everytime I start the car. Will update once I install...

I would do a basic setting for the g85 then do a steering stop limit basic setting
