Finally! Apple Carplay shows Google Maps

I'm elated that with IOS 12 I can now view Google Maps (including satellite view) on the big screen via Apple Carplay! I have found Google Maps to be the most accurate and reliable navigation tool, especially compared with the Audi Nav and Apple's Maps app. Real time traffic and eta estimates have always been very accurate in my experience, both in USA and Canada.

Hopefully Waze does the same. I like the police, red light, and speed camera alerts.

Yes, IOS 12 allows Waze on Carplay now too.

Should be 2-4 weeks until Waze on CarPlay. I just wish CarPlay let us delete Apple Maps. I'll never use that.

I think you can just remove the Apple Maps app from your phone, although I expect that apps like "Around Me" use Apple Maps to take you to a selected place, so removing it may remove that convenience.

Just went in car and I see Google Maps, but still no Waze, in do time I guess. But all better than Apple or Audi maps.

The thing is I like the Audi map in front of me.
There is no way to get maps from the phone to be displayed there ?

Audi didn't design the virtual cockpit to show navigation information from Carplay. Likely because they are using nav systems and equipment from a few years ago behind the scenes.

OK, that's pretty much what I thought.

Correct. Just note that a lot the iOS hooks (IE Siri) only work with the native iOS apps. If you delete the Maps app, you can't ask Siri for directions.

And as an aside, although Siri and its MAPS are not the best of the navigation apps, for those with Apple watches, the vibration on the wrist before a turn is quite valuable. There are many times when a navigation app states to turn here, sometime those "exits" are really close together...Do I turn here, or 100 feet from here? Anyway, that buzz on the Apple watch integrated with Apple Maps is pretty convenient, especially if you want it silent in the cabin!

    Anyway, just a little 0.02$....

Waze and G Maps are working on my wife's iPhone now with carplay. Though compared to my android, it seems to be missing features. For example, I can use the Audi trackpad to move the map around in GMaps on Android, but can't seem to do that when using Carplay. Also if she unlocks her iPhone and opens other apps, GMaps disappears from the screen. My android stays working while I do other things. Maybe they are working on adding these features.

I'm assuming that Apple is purposely limiting the functionality of GMaps, because they can! Hopefully they'll eventually allow more functionality.

I noticed last night that I'm not able to have Apple Carplay on the center screen and have an Audi MMI map in the virtual cockpit? It will only show the compass (no map) when my phone is usb attached and in carplay?

See above. CarPlay is not integrated into the car’s navigation functionality in the virtual dashboard.

That does not explain why the integrated navigation shuts down when carplay is active.

Two navs going at once doesn't really make sense to me. Audi must say if you're using your phone to navigate, don't confuse the user with audi's map at the same time.

edit: on Android the audi map only disappears when I use nav on my phone. If I am not navigating on phone (but using android auto), I still see Audi maps.

I misunderstood the focus of the question. I imagine it would be to minimize the visual conflict between the two systems, or maybe CarPlay just disables all other MMI systems, like the phone (which also becomes inaccessible).

The problem is that you don't need to be 'in" google maps (or Waze) for the integrated navigation to be disabled.
If you're on the apple carplay home screen you now lose the integrated navigation in the virtual cockpit.

That doesn't make sense. It works properly for me in Android Auto and only shows the compass when I'm navigating on google maps. I can have even both open if there's no route selected on google maps.

Maybe they'll fix in a future version.

I want to say that I have had the integrated map on the VC while in carplay, but not in Carplays Waze or Maps. However, I think it may be like the exhaust flaps / S vs D mode where there is a secret sequence of events that allows the integrated maps on VC to work! Examples would be start car, have VC maps pulled up then plug in iphone? Or really, any sequence of these. I definitley notice the compass in the VC when in GMaps or Waze, but specifically remember being surprised seeing the integrated maps on magically at some point, I just dont recall how...

Or I could be complete FOS, haha! I'll have to go mess with it now and see

I agree as it wasn’t doing this for me the first week of google maps in CarPlay. Something changed and it might have been a never version of google maps that I installed. I have tried closing the apps before plugging in the phone but it didn’t help.

Audi VC Maps & Google Maps Showing at Sametime

    Hello,

I just got my 2018 S5 Sportback from the 10,000 mile service, after which my Audi Nav Maps on Virtual Cockpit and Google Maps are showing at the same time, NO MORE COMPASS! Yay!

Just thought I would let everyone know.

Anyone else able to get both to come up at the same time?

    Thanks,

    PuffinHershey

I don't know for sure, but wouldn't be surprised if your S5 has the newer generation electronics vs the older version used on the RS3 that was tweaked to provide some features but isn't as powerful as the new generation. For example, the lane departure control on my 18 RS3 is less effective than my neighbor's 18 Q5. But I will check my VC nav maps next time I use Google Maps via Apple Carplay.

I'm very interested in this topic. A question did you get this with an iPhone? If so can you also try an android device if possible? Ill check with the dealer if there are any updates pending for the RS3 but as @keninblaine said RS3 might just be to old. Sad really, that a $65k Audi cant perform this task.

    Hi All,

I used to get the compass on the VC Screen when trying to use Google Maps through apple car play on iPhone X. After dearler 10,000 mile service both come on at the same time. I was even able to put the address in twice once in the Car Nav and again in on the Phone and both were giving directions at the same time. Which was cool because I had full google maps (w/o subscription) and had the turn by turn come up on the Virtucal Cockpict Screen.

I did have to put address in on the phone first then again through the car Navi and then plugged phone also I think the order matters because I did get the compass breifly but I unplugged my phone put the address in the Car Nav compass went away then I plugged my phone back in and the VC was working and so was google maps.

I think the dealer did a software upgrade which would explain the new change.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,

    PuffinHershey

Seems buggy though if one time you had the compass and then you unplugged and then it worked. I'm not sure to call this one 100% yet.

Is this is on an RS3 or only a S5? Also, can you try an android device?

I will agree this is the way to get them both to appear at the same time. I did this to get around the compass. FWIW this was working for me on my RS3 before I had my 10k service.

I would have liked Audi to just integrate Carplay into the virtual cockpit views from the start, but I guess that reduces the value of their in-car solution.
