tires super noisy after rotation - thoughts?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi-

I have a set of PILOT SPORT A/S 3+ which I use 9 months of the year. I rotate them regularly. This time after the rotation they became super noisy. Any thoughts? There is still a lot of tread on the tires.

I don't know if the tires have been previously rotated using a front to rear pattern, but this time they did a cross-over. Could it be that is the main factor? If so, should I just deal with it?

Note, these tires have an asymmetric tread pattern and are * not * directional.

    Thanks!

When was the last time you had an alignment done? Could be a result of how the tires wore and putting them at different corners resulted in road noise. Happened to me with a set of used PSS. When I moved the fronts to the rear and put new tires up front, things quieted down.

I have not done an alignment but have never experience any pull, nor have I felt any strange tire wear rubbing my hand over the tread. You'd think that if one was out of alignment I would have experienced the noise on previous rotations. I agree the cross-rotation pattern may have contributed to this. How long until it goes away? Three weeks in and I can't stand it.

Till you fix it since all the tires are wearing however they are making contact currently.

Measure tread depth across the front wheels, I am guessing your inner fronts may have more wear then the outer sides, consider an alignment with new tires installed to ensure you have no suspension issue

    +1

I had a similar issue and my alignment was of and the tires wore in incorrectly. Switch them back until you are ready for a new set.

    On a side note....

How do you like those? I was thinking about them for my next set. Though I will drive on them year round, so it will include snow driving.

Many times the wear pattern that creates noise is due to the leading edges of the blocks wearing differently, so when they a cross corner switched all 4 corners would have changed the directon of tire rotation when driving. I usually only cross one pr (fronts) and move reas to frnot on same side. This will minimize the noise bc only 2 of 4 tires are rotating in a different direction at tire swap.

I have always rotated my Michelin PSS front to rear and vice-versa. I had been considering the Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires and checked the Tire Rack site to get more info. Here's an article from there that states: "Michelin has gone from a directional (V-shaped) tread pattern in the Pilot Sport A/S Plus to a non-directional asymmetrical (bigger outside shoulder) tread design with the Pilot Sport A/S 3. Their engineers use a varying number of longitudinal grooves to create a tread design that will resist hydroplaning and allow for cross-rotation, leading to more even wear."

That said, if your tires have become noticeably noisy following a cross-rotation, I suspect that the tire noise will not go away as you drive additional miles on them. As mentioned above, your best bet would likely be to undo the cross-rotation and stick with F-R rotations until they wear to the wear bar indicators. You didn't mention how many miles your tires have accumulated but according to the reviews on Tire Rack, a number of reviewers complained about them getting noisy after 20,000 miles or so. I know my Pilot Super Sports always get noisy after several seasons (they're on their 3rd summer season and the wife can't stand the noise, so they'll be replaced in the coming spring.

Let us know what you find/do to resolve the issue.

I like them a lot and got the same tires for my son's A3. I've driven in snow with them but still have a dedicated set for the winter. I drive about 25 miles each way to work and prefer the added safety, even though I only REALLY need them a week or two a season.

I could be close to that 20K point. I think the biggest problem is this is the first time they told me they crossed on the rotation, which means there is a chance the other rotations have been front/rear. That makes me wonder if the noise is exacerbated. I'll give it another week at most.

Yes, I will work in an alignment, too. I know this is not conventional thinking, but I was raised that a car does not "just" go out of alignment. The people the make money off of them will tell you railroad tracks throw the car off. Yes, I've hit a few decent pot holes... I put my hand on the tires to check for feathering. That said, I think I will measure across tread as well, to check for coning.

Last thing... there is a slight chance I am also hearing the start of a wheel bearing going out. I've had them go out on my GTi and A4, so I have a feel for what it sounds like... there is a teeny tiny hint of that. Of course, I will swap the cross-rotation first.

I guess I should have finished the thought... They were good in the cold and the snow, but I couldn't give you any notes I took because I don't remember. The first winter after I got the AS 3+ I also got Alpin PA4s and an 18" wheel-set, so there was just a bit of driving on the AS 3+ in the later fall and early spring. 3 seasons in I really like those PA4s.

Exactly what I plan to do after I get my new Yoko Advan Sport V405's installed tomorrow. I had some uneven tire wear/feathering due to previous owner not rotating the DWS 06 properly and also letting car go out of alignment due to pothole. Dealer inspected everything and said no suspension issues but I will need tires or just deal with the noise which I am sick of, the front inner is 4/32 while outer is 6/32, rears are at 7/32 even across. I have decided to replace tires for winter and when first rotation is due rears will move forward on same side but fronts will cross over to the rear

One time I waited a longer than usual to rotate my tires I did a 4 wheel slide into a tight turn that same day. It ended up taking about 2 days of driving for them to wear back to normal.

FYI, they crossed the rears to the front, and moved the front to the rears.

    Hi-

I had them measure tread-depth across all for tire (Left/Middle/Right) and am at 7/32" all across the tread on all tires. The guy said to let it run for 2K miles and see if the noise is still there. We shall see.

That's backwards for an AWD car. Rearward cross is the correct rotation pattern for 4WD and AWD cars/trucks (without staggered tires, of course).

Finally made it in to the dealer for a quick listen... going in tomorrow to replace my right-front, outer wheel bearing... not a surprise, but geez that's expensive. Standard shop hour are high. I think they said 5+?
I know about a year ago I hit a ridiculous hole the construction crew should have covered with a steel plate (which they did later). I was sure there would be some noticeable damage on the tire, wheel, or worse but could not fine any. Maybe that was the start of it?

For those that care, I am also getting an alignment. I will be curious how far off my numbers are.

    Wheel bearing... fixed it.
I punted on the alignment this time (did a brake fluid flush instead). My all-season are at 5/32" and I will be switching to winter. I'll think about an alignment on my next new-tire buy.
