    Sport Diff System Fault

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi all I’m getting this fault after lowering my car on coilovers. Any ideas? I checked the sports diff and no visible leak. Maybe the right front wheel sensor has something to do with it?

This is my DD and I commute 60 miles a day. Driving on this will do some damage? The system fault has been been intermittent over the last week. It goes away after I turn the car off. but now it stays on.

Clear all the codes and run it for a day and check again, looks like a lot of unrelated codes clouding the issue.

Check the ABS wiring wasn’t damaged when fitting the coil overs. The multi plugs get quite brittle and are easily damaged.

I cleared all the other codes and updated the errors in my original post. The speed sensor error was gone and didn't re-appear.

The most relevant errors that remained were:

Similar codes. People either got the oil pressure or temperature sensor reading as "Implausible".

I did a little more research and people's solutions were either Audi replacing the sport diff. I highly doubt this is a mechanical error.

Another possible (and more likely) the sensor either crapped out. Or there is a short or open with the sport diff oil pressure sensor.

I'm going to figure out which sensor is the oil pressure one and try to trace the line back. Another guy had a post where it ended up being corrosion near the battery which gave him the same sport diff fault.

My car is throwing the sport diff fault, has been for a while now. Your issue (which is the same as mine) is that the oil pressure/temp sensor on your diff are bad. You can replace the sensor (costs $250 new at Audi here), buy a used one on eBay and replace it, or buy a new/used diff. With all of these options you will need your VIN coded onto the sensor with the VAS501 dealer-only tool (VCDS will not work for this). I caution you if you replace your diff, as there are a few more steps involved (need to read some code off the diff to program it to the ECU). If you're replacing the sensor(s), do NOT replace both at once! The dealer should know this, but one sensor should be swapped and programmed at a time, as it reads the VIN programmed on the other sensor.

found this: https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthr...erential-fault where a guy does the coding himself after replacing the sensor.

I'm going to buy a used diff and take the sensors off of that. I can't think of spending 500$ for 2 sensors when used diffs are going for less than $300 on ebay. I plan on buying the special 27mm socket as well.

I'm going to buy a used diff and take the sensors off of that. I can't think of spending 500$ for 2 sensors when used diffs are going for less than $300 on ebay. I plan on buying the special 27mm socket as well.

I can only find the sensors/sport diffs for the s5.

Can anyone confirm that the S4 and S5 share the same sport diff?

They only have the sensors part numbers for the S5, which are the same as the post from the ross-tech forums and the A8:

Pretty certain the diff is the same.

I just retrofitted the dynamic steering column and rack and the running gear for every other bit of the S5/RS5 is the same as the S4/RS4.

Thanks. I confirmed that it is the same diff as well.

Pulled the trigger on the brown sensor. Found one on ebay for ~$50. And the special 27mm socket for another ~$50.

Both are expected to ship by tomorrow. I will change out the brown sensor first and see what happens on Friday or over the weekend. If this sensor doesn't fix it, I'm assuming the other sensor (black) is the faulty one and will buy that one next. The coding using VAGCOM isn't hard at all. I'll keep everyone posted with the results.

I am getting the oil pressure fault on mine as well. Did you ever get yours solved?

    Sport Diff System Fault

Hi all fixed the issue after replacing with the sensor kit.

Did the sport diff service while I was at it by replacing the fluids after replacing the sensors.

Followed this post to clear and prime the lines: https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/6426/Image1624581558.902410.jpg

If anyone needs the sensors (brown/black) let me know. Apparently mine we’re good still and the issues were the solenoids. Or if you need the thin wall socket to replace the sensors.

Digging this up from the grave, battling the same issue right now on my 2013 b8.5 s4… can anyone confirm the sensors fixed theirs? What about the solenoids and their location? Would love to fix this issue.

Maybe helpful maybe not, but my sport diff errors were caused by low voltage from battery. As they die the cars electrical system gets gremlins when voltages are too low. Never touched the diff or sensors. Swapped my battery and haven't had an error in almost 3 years.

Anything is helpful at this point, I appreciate you chiming in. I did however just replace the battery in October of 2024. Had some mechanical issues and car sat for a month and the battery went completely dead. Only thing with that is I wasn’t able to code the new battery with vagcom because I had already installed it and forgot to pull the info off of the new battery and it wouldn’t let me change the last digit of the old battery so I just left it because I didn’t feel like pulling it back out at that moment but it’s been driven daily since then with no issues. Since then I upgraded to an RS5 and have the S4 to my son. He was driving in some heavy rain the other day and got the sport diff fault and I’ve been going down the rabbit hole ever since. VCDS shows the temps reading on the sensors but 0 bars for pressure, unfortunately why I’m here. I may pull the battery out and properly code it though since this just reminded me, but I don’t think that’s going to solve it unfortunately. I’ve since pulled the 3 sensor plugs cleaned them and reinstalled with some dielectric grease and the control module on the back of the battery, cleared DTCs, but fault remains :/

Funny thing is I didn't code my battery right away and errors did continue for a month or two. I would clear them with VCDS, and they would eventually come back, usually while cornering, so a bad sensor seemed likely to me.

Coded the battery when I got around to it (always felt like "coding" was just another nickel and dime move by dealers) and the error never came back. The gremlins are born with low voltage but persist in some memory somewhere. I've done a ton of wrenching in my car and gave up trying to rationalize why some things be the way they are with Audi they just are.

Maybe you have a real hardware issue but Id 100% code it before I did anything else

    Good luck

Much appreciated! You’re right that needs to be the first place I start. Probably won’t get to it for a couple days but I will post back here if that resolves it! Truly hope so, you’re also right with Audi sometimes it makes no sense whatsoever lol… Thank you!

So no joy on recoding the battery. Reprogrammed, cleared codes, diff fault comes right back. Took the negative terminal off the battery for about 20 minutes, cleared codes, still comes right back. To be fair I had to kind of hodge podge the battery coding because the duralast H9 100AH battery I bought did not have a BEM code and that took me down some other nonsense path of trying to figure out how to code that… and to be completely honest I don’t know if it’s completely accurate. Smh… just never ending shenanigans with these cards… does anyone know how to check if the pressure sensor versus the solenoid is bad? How to test the pump? I’d like to go down the appropriate diagnostic path and not just start throwing parts at this, but I’m not quite sure where to begin. Any thoughts, recommendations, or pointers are much appreciated.

Hey guys been awhile since I’ve been on Audizine. But this is the speciality tool you need. It is a 27mm socket since one of the sensors is recessed inside the diff. Remember if you go down the sensor replacement only replace one at a time and do the adaptation prior to swap out the other sensors as the sport diff tolerances are coded in to each sensor.

    https://vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDe...temid=16810184

Before dealing sensors, I’d start with the solenoids first since the kit is much cheaper than 2 sensors + tool. My solenoids were rusty so assuming that’s why they gave me the sport diff error. I’d check to see how the solenoids look. If they look rusty they are probably bad from weather exposure.

Follow the thread here on how they fix it with the solenoid kit.

Very much appreciated!! That tool will be a life saver as I was reading through one of the threads where they had to grind down their 27mm because it was too thick, I hate being in the middle of a job like this and finding out I can’t finish because I’m missing something so trivial smh. And yeah $60 is pretty ridiculous Audi markup for a thin walled deep 27mm socket smh. I’ll post back here when I get to dig into this job one of these weekends. Thank you again, this thread and you putting down your experience is a life saver.
