    CV Boots pulling off

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm hoping someone has dealt with this and can help me figure it out...

I replaced both front axle shafts a couple of weeks ago, with the best I could find locally, now the CV boots keep pulling off the outer joint, on both sides. It lasts about a day before pulling off and coating everything in grease and I am on third set now. Motor mounts are good, control arms were replaced 2 years ago. It is lowered on H&R cup kit and stock motor.

    Thanks for any help!

Probably junk axles, with junk junk cv joints and boots. Not saying they are, but not saying they aren't. What clamps are you using?

You could try using worm clamps as opposed to those ones that clip with a notch, they can be difficult to get on really tight. I'd start there and move on. You shouldn't need to use a new boot each time given the short time frame, just repack with grease unless they are tearing but sounds from your description like they are just falling off.

Either wrong boot, or the inner part of the boot is up too far on the shaft. Don't use worm drive, you want as little offsetting rotational mass on there as possible.

I wouldn't recommend worm clamps, unless you want to tighten them ever week

Timtheguru has a good point about having the inner side position incorrectly. I suggested trying a worm because it worked fine for the 40k I had the car after I replaced a boot, and what he has done up until this point hasn't; I get what your saying about offset rotational mass though, didn't seem to be enough for me to notice anything.

Is the cv boot "tab" in on the cv joint groove?

You also may try to push out all the air before tightening the clamp.

And make sure the boot and the mating surface on the joint is COMPLETELY clean of grease. If there is grease between the boot and the joint it will never stay on, worm clamps or not.

    Two things:

    1. as suggested above make sure the smaller end of boot with pinch clamp on it is not too far on the shaft, it should sit on some kind of groove. Push it outwards if so.
    2. china axles are made entirely out of chinesium, including the pinch clamps. The pinch clamps on these are VERY soft and have very little holding power and thus I am not surprised they are pulling off. I had the same problem many years ago with chinese axles. Solution is to get good quality new pinch clamps and install them on axles, they won't pop out of the groove with the boot anymore.

If you can wait for shipping, I recommend to buy the Hudson part from ECS. It comes in an Audi box with all hardware and grease included. I believe it is the same part sold by the dealer.

Having both side keep popping off really just seems like cheap material doing what it does. If not wanting to take off the cv joint to swap in a quality boot with clamp, this is adding to the suggestion of cleaning the surfaces really well before placing new clamp on. You can also try applying a tacky lubricant (ie gasket spray) after cleaned.

Not saying that will work, but a suggestion if not wanting to go through the process of removing the cv joint to swap the boot.

At a minimum OP should peel the boot back and squeeze as much as the boot can take of the grease from this kit and then install the provided clamp. It is really the clamp that's the problem here but I would not trust the amount of grease they included in the chinese axle at all.
