    Hatch rattle.....privacy shade/cover

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I took out the cover to clean the rear window and after I had put it back the darn thing rattles over every bump. It has two metal tabs that just poke into the hatch plastic trim panel and there is about 1/8" of play it seems. Is there supposed to be something on the end of the metal tabs?
    Thanks for any insight...

Are you sure you got both sides properly positioned? I'd check to make sure one didn't break off too. I had that problem, and ended up putting a small screw in place and it works fine.

My metal tips are bare. I have heard of the piece behind the seats causing rattles if it's not seated.

I put felt tape around the two metal tips for the privacy cover to no avail as I still get that rattle upon harsh bumps.

I then thought it might be the jack beneath the spare tire as it was sitting loosely. I tightened the Velcro strap and that wasn't it either.

I've banged around the hatch area a lot and really couldn't pinpoint it.

I get some noise from the privacy cover side inserts and also some noise when I bang near the door that opens to the amp. Can't tell if those are the sources, though. If you figure it out, please let us know.

Many thanks guys for the input.... I put some foam tape on the tabs so they fit in the slots better and the noise has stopped...seems like the slots in the hatch cover are to big for the skinny metal tabs. With them installed stock thei
Re is,about 1/8" play it seems....not sure what I did different than the dealer but they rattle without the tape...I'll ask the dealer when it goes in for service and update on the forum if I get any insight...

I have had this type of rattle since I purchased my car last summer (used, 2015 RS7). I have totally removed the privacy shade thinking it was the cause, but now it is still there, leading me to believe that it is the latch for the hatch. I actual latch in the trunk floor lip appears to be loose, so I have added some material to shim it tight, it still happens but not anywhere near as loud as before. Let us know what you find and hope this helps.

Yeah it isn’t those tips, at least in my car as well. After I wrapped those things in felt tape, I thought I solved it as well but it came back.

Another source that may or may not be the cause is the rear license plate and frame. If you have a frame with only two bolts on the top, there’s a lot of flexibility in the frame and plate. I banged around the rear area and it rattled like crazy, although I was by myself so I couldn’t test what the sound was like inside.

I may felt tape the license plate and frame just as a precautionary move and maybe I’ll get lucky.

You should have rubber grommets where the privacy cover attaches. I am missing one on one side and I hear a rattle when I hit bumps as well. I keep meaning to get the part number and order one, but I guess I'll just do it next time I get it serviced.

Many thanks for the input. I'm pretty sure it's the tabs, since as soon as I put tape on the tabs the noise went away.
JGood----I'm interested in the rubber grommets you have...are they on the tabs or in the slots? Pics of my set up.

I believe he’s talking about the more interior cover, the fixed one near the rear seat, not the one you or I are talking about that is attached to the hatch.

If you remove that interior cover, there are four rubber grommets where it physically attaches to the car.

No we are talking about the same part. It clips into the hatch, and there are two grommets at the attachment point. I am missing one, and it rattles when I hit bumps.

Got this issue resolved by the dealer. There are two rubber “seats” that are behind the hatch panel. They are just clipped in and had fallen out. They removed the “door card” on the rear hatch and put them back in. Now metal tabs on cover when inserted irto the slots don’t move at all. Obviously a case of if you push the cover tabs in crooked you can inadvertently knock them off. He said if it happens again he will glue them in place.

I have one coming from around the A pillar-ish area on the passenger side, but only at low speeds. The dealership took a look and got rid of it temporarily claiming it was the engine cowl in the engine bay but it is back. This is the first time I have had a rattle like this on a car so I am going to keep on it until gone, so any suggestions or input appreciated.

I believe there is a TSB that addresses the A pillar rattle....it has to do with one of the front control arms I believe that manifests itself in a dash rattle near A pillar. My service guy pulled up my car on his computer and it shows all related TSB by problem area......
