2015 Q5 3.0T Engine noise. HELP!! IS THIS SERIOUS??

Hi all,

I just purchased this used 2015 Q5 with 88K about a month ago. It has all service records and maintenance performed. It didn't sound this loud when i first got it like a month ago. Is this normal or am i screwed? I've searched this forum and AW forum and Youtube but can't quite dial it down to an answer of what it is. All help is appreciated.

I have never gotten a CEL for this noise either, mine has been going on for quite sometime as well. Dont think its something serious.

As soon as the engine gets any sort of load everything tightens up and the noise is gone. Is yours the same?

I was going to say this too. I didn't hear anything in that clip different from mine. The injectors are rather noisy, but only when the hood is open.

...and i think even more so after a cold start.

OP, i'll try to see what mine sounds like later for comparison sake.

Not reading that mess of a post lol. But it sounds like a normal N80 purge valve working. It cycles like that when the engine is warm just as a functioning SAI system should.

Should be fine as long as there’s no cels. I thought mine was bad bc it made that same clicking and had a SAI system leak but I replaced it and it didn’t fix the leak and the clicking was still there lol.

Edit: mine was a 2.0t, so I am not aware of these being issues on the 3.0t.

If you find the purge valve and disconnect the electrical connector, and the ticking stops, you know it’s that valve and is normal.

I agree with the fuel injector noise theory as I had a 2011 Q5 3.2L and it sounded just like that. Never had any issues with the engine.

This video has the noise that i heard that prompted my to make the first video. I originally thought it was engine tap. I just figured out that the noise seems to be coming from or being amplified through the driver side air vent.
The noise sounds like it could be an exhaust leak or some kind of rattling. You hear it better with the windows up through the drivers side vent.

In regards to the injector noise, has anyone tried an upper cylinder lubricant, fuel additive to see if that has any impact? Maybe the Lucas, Redline SI-1, or some other product?

Anyone on here have a "NORMAL" chain tensioner noise? I would love to hear about someone else experience and if there was any engine damage.

I knew it was a local audi because the carfax service record. I called the local Audi dealership and they just emailed it to me. I thought it was strange also as they gave me the prior owners info.

I guess it's not the tensioner. I drove around with the lead tech and he told me the noise sounded normal. We looked around for another Q5 to compare but couldn't find a 3.0t so he took me to another customers B8.5 and started it up to try and compare and it didn't have the noise. I'm totally lost at this point. Just researching different noises on youtube.

My 15 sq5 sounds like that sometimes, I'm guessing a loose belt. My plan is to have it looked at at my next svce interval. It comes and goes on mine.
