    Extended Warranty

My 14 A5 cab is out of warranty but I purchased an extended warranty (not through Audi) for $4,500 that will cover all drive train and a bunch of other stuff but it's not a bumper to bumper. It also does not cover the ragtop nor any trim or upholstery. It also does not cover regular maintenance. This will cover the car for 6 years or 125K (I'm at 38K) probably as long as I would own the car. So far the car has been pretty trouble free with he exception of the headliner coming loose (I can not find any service that will cover the ragtop).

Do you think the extended warranty is necessary or worth it?

My '14 A5 will be out of warrantee soon and I plan on not buying an extended warrantee. I'm heavily modified and plan on making more mods, both performance and aesthetic. I'm not sure an aftermarket warrantee will cover repairs that are mod related. I'm going to put money aside on a regular basis to cover repairs.

Get a refund. Way overpriced. I was offered $3600 for full bumper-to-bumper for S5 Cab to extend to 6 yr 100K by a dealer in FL. I declined because I thought it was overpriced.

FYI, you can get the whole rag top replaced for around $4000 by a very high end shop. Is it really worth buying a warranty on it? I don't think so.

I can still get a refund. Just checking with the group to see if they feel confident with a 14 A5 cab will make it the next 5-6 years without major issues. I can save the money and put it into the ragtop. I can manage general maintenance but am concerned about major repairs.

Remember that these warranty companies aren't in the charity business. If they weren't making money (i.e. by paying more in claims than they made in sales), they wouldn't be doing it.

Lemodular, IMO $4500 is a bit steep for a warranty, especially when it is not bumper to bumper and as far as warrantees go, 3rd party folks are in the business of making money and will do their own "due diligence" not to spend their money fixing your car. Having said that, I think you should keep your warranty if it offers good coverage (or shop for one that is less expensive with the same coverage or better). Your car is 4 years old and out of warranty. It is going to break. That is what cars do...especially these. They are probably among the best cars in their class in terms of comfort, feel, materials, looks, etc...but they are sensitive and very expensive as almost every repair requires damn near taking the whole thing apart. Think about how much a transmission costs to replace in your ride. Do you know how much a starter costs (I do...just paid $2k to replace mine...$2k!!!)? two covered repairs over the course of your warranty and it might just have paid for itself. Not trying to scare you, but I am living this dream since my car is no longer under warranty.

Also, if you will be dealing with a 3rd party company, I highly recommend cultivating a relationship with a really good independent mechanic who will work with you not only with repairs, but also with how to "sell" the repair to the warranty company. Their explanation often means the difference between a covered repair and an expensive headache.

Bought an extended Platinum warranty thru Audi who now offers in house warranties .. The price increases with your mileage so I paid just over 3K at 35k miles for coverage up to 96k miles and 5 more years.. Is it worth it? Well, just one major repair will eat that up in a minute.. Had one for my RS6 and when the tiptronic torque converter took a dump, the repair bill for a new (rebuilt) factory tranny was 3 times the amount I paid for the extended warranty. That was all I needed to know to buy one for this car..

Cancel and call Troy at www.fd-warranty.com - you'll get way better options for way less. I got my 10YR/120K OEM Audi Platinum (Bumper-to-Bumper+) for $3600. Your car is not eligible for that one now but he has a Fidelity one that's bumper-to-bumper and should do the trick...

$4500 does seem a bit much, on the other hand it can be very useful. My rear diff just went out and was $7500 to fix on my RS5. Luckily the warranty covered it all.

Another thing you have to take into consideration is that you cannot have any mods and they also check to see all the maintenance has been done by a certified dealership. For example, the 15K, 30K and 45K mile service inspections. Just a thought and good luck with whatever you decide.

Is the extended FD Warranty concerned about mods like Audi? I notice your signature (“lots of mods”); do you also have an FD Warranty?

I just completed 4 years (I.e. factory warranty is done), so I’m interested in warranty options that don’t care about mods. Thx.

I was going to buy from Troy at FD but the dealer matched him and packaged it in with the sale so it was easier. But he def had the best deals versus all other warranty resellers. My warranty is an OEM one so it falls under the same guidelines where if a mod is responsible for the issue, then they can disclaim it. That's why I havent done an ECU but did do intake/exhaust etc. That said, I'll probably still do a supercharger once a reliable kit is available as the warranty may no longer cover engine stuff then but will still cover HVAC and all other electronics and other parts. Reach out to Troy and tell him your scenario and he'll give you the best advice and options.

Thank you, I will give him a call. These warranties are just insurance for major repairs. I agree with everyone that $4500 is rather expensive (but not if you have just one major repair). I have never had one on any of my cars so I'm not sure how well these policies work. I always have a nagging feeling that it's a rip-off and they will do anything to deny compensation.

Has anyone ever had to make a claim with any of these 3rd party warranties?

This is my 3rd "modern" vehicle I've owned and I've never had a repair that needed to be made under warranty. I've got a 2008 GMC truck with 112K miles and never had an issue. Very happy I didn't buy the $4000 warranty they tried to sell me in 2007 and every year since.

Extended warranties are just legalized gambling IMO...

Lemodular, Snocat makes a good point, and I too had a GMC (Chevy Tahoe) that had 313k miles without much issue...but we are talking about an Audi...and as I said before (and others on this post since) these cars will break, and when they do, it's never inexpensive. Snocat called the extended warranty legalized gambling, and he isn't wrong if you think about it...but it is also gambling (bad gambling) if you hang your hat on the idea that your expensive, choc-fulla-tech, autobahn slayer won't let you down and cost you your first-born to get it back on the road. Unless you have the proper tools/tech/knowledge and can get under the hood and fix your car yourself, the extended warranty is a no-brainer.

For my 2012 S5 I bought a 4 year extended warranty for 3500. It was normally 4500, but they had a "special" and took 1000 off, and allowed me to pay for the remainder of the 3500 over 18 months with no interest which worked out pretty well.

In the end, I had to have my thermostat, water pump and a seal replaced. Had I paid out of pocket for the repairs, I would have been somewhere around 2500-3000 + labour. If you factor in all the loaners I had and the convenience of dealing with Audi I maybe broke even. I ended up trading the car in, and because of that, the warranty wouldn't transfer to the new owner who bought it at the dealership which is a waste.

My 2 cents - I wouldn't buy it again, but depends on the service history and how well you take care of your car.

Ahhh thats a shame as he has the best deals for oem and 3rd-party but I guess only if its still under current warranty - makes sense as they are issuing the policy w/o inspecting the car so I guess they figure if its still under warranty they dont have to worry about the car needing a ton of work at time of purchase. Sorry man - thought he'd be able to help you out!

I believe if paid 2.5k for my extended warranty up to 110k miles. I have about 60k miles clocked. If i remember correctly, on my old bmw i paid about 2k for my extend warranty and it wasn't till a year later that i cancelled my warranty and got partial of what i had paid back :)

Just got quoated about 5K from fidelity for 60k more miles over 4 years. With the diff issues and other potential pitfalls do you guys really think its a bad idea for a 2014 RS5?

Edit: Also where are you guys getting such cheap warranty plans?

Most likely because the warranty was bought with low mileage and under factory warranty.

Did you buy it from your dealer? Was your car out of warranty when you purchased that?

I did. My car is a 2012. Since it's 2018, CPO is cut off on any car piror to 2013 unfortunately. I wasnt going to get a V6. I mentioned how much of a lemon my b7 a4 was and I was offered either a 1 year or 2 year Audi Pure Protection plan. I went with platinum and opted for 2 years because why not - look at how much it covers and at $2400 or so, you cant beat that.

I just had my thermostat go bad and my warranty covered what wouldve been about $1200 in parts and labor for that. I paid $190 for the diagnostic for it and rest was covered..

Another thing you have to take into consideration is that you cannot have any mods and they also check to see all the maintenance has been done by a certified dealership. For example, the 15K, 30K and 45K mile service inspections. Just a thought and good luck with whatever you decide.
And this is why I’m so torn.

I don't recall what I paid for mine but for our Q7 but it has covered upwards of $30K in repairs and counting. true I am extremely picky but well worth it for me. on the RS the factory warranty will expire in about 350 miles and my extended will take over. You really need a good dealer to work with you in replacing anything that is slightly off.
