    C5 S6 Exhaust/Mod Options

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Google and the forum seem to be few and far inbetween for help.

I am 99% sure I am picking up a C5 S6 this weekend. It is stock except for H&R anti-roll bars. I will want to wake up the exhaust of the V8.

Any other mod suggestions would be great. I am not looking for big power. Just intake, exhaust and tune most likely. Then down the road maybe wheels and suspension. This will be my daily.

Hey man, welcome and good luck with the C5 S6 hunt. I am on the fence about selling mine right now. Wife wants me to get rid of one my cars but I don't want to. Its tearing me apart! It's too good of a car for my brain to justify selling it for the small amount its worth now. It is a fantastic DD, it's the ultimate road tripper, and such a blast to drive.

I am ready to make the V8 sing a little louder too, haven't come to any decisions yet. Unfortunately I'm in California so I have to keep the cats in tact, maybe a resonator delete and muffler upgrade are in order.

My car is stock besides hotchkis sway bars, and a short shift kit on my O1E swap. Just recently had the ECU flashed for better throttle response.

Have some intake spacers I'm going to throw on when I go in to change the valve covers and fix all the little leaks soon.

The suspension is surprising still pretty tight for having 155k miles on it, the sway bars made a huge improvement when I put them on a few thousand miles ago. I think it's probably where I will focus after i sort the exhaust out... If I can convince my wife to keep it.

The BBD V8 has a pretty crazy dual intake manifold that changes the length of the intake runners and opens the air box at high rpm for more air. If the vacuum system controlling it gets damaged or any of the plastic linkages break you lose a lot of power and torque and is very easy to notice. I don't know if there are any mods you can do that would improve the system.

I have a set of 19" BBS wheels and a set of lightweight 17" OZ's, and the car rides so much better with the smaller wheels and bigger sidewalls. It might not look as good on the smaller wheels but it sure does drive better.

Last thing on my list is a BBK.

    Cheers,
    Gogeees

Ooooh, more details on the intake spacers? I have a small weeping valve cover gasket. While I’m fixing that, I could slap those on.

JHM has a nice kit here...

    https://jhmotorsports.com/jhm-intake...ad-40v-v8.html

Something cheaper to just replace the stock gaskets.

This was my last one, only thing done was rear mufflers replaced with straight pipe.

a little droney between 2000-2500 rpm but besides that fine, usually at freeway speeds I was cruising around 3k so it wasn't an issue. Car was 6 speed swapped obviously.

Dang that sounds really good. It would obviously be the most budget friendly exhaust mod too. Shops around me will do that for ~$100.

I spend most of my time freeway driving as well but I may just start small and swap the mufflers with some Magnaflow ones, get a little beefier sound with minimal to no drone. I know it won't sound as loud and good as yours in the video but this will also be a part time dog-mobile for my 2 pups so I don't want to drown them out with drone and noise.

Bump. Also posted a WTB ad for exhaust in the C5 classifieds section.

My short list of mods/maintenance is:
Take apart and reseal passenger side headlight/clean both exterior lenses
    Tint
    Exhaust
    Oil change/filters
    Valve cover gaskets
    Possibly lowering springs
    Wheels
    Tune

    Bump!

Got some @MagnaFlow straight through 5x8 oval mufflers (#12215) and double wall tips (#35121). I hope this fits/hope I don't need offset mufflers (#12225) and or the shorter tips. I will find out tomorrow when I take it to the shop to have them install them.

Any other advice on mods I can do for a little more power and/or handling without breaking the bank?

Not much you can do to these cars to add power sans supercharger. 6 speed swapped versions feel faster, but not sure if you’re headed that way.

Handling is hugely upgraded by aftermarket sways. Coilovers help too.

I am going to try to have a shop swap the mufflers today. ChicagosPhantom recommended resonator delete too and said there is no drone. Thoughts?

Took my car today to get the mufflers removed and guy misunderstood and took the resonator out too. Car is really loud now.. maybe too loud. Will have to drive around after work and see how the drone is.

Well, I like the sound, drone is a bit much. I think my wife will hate it, but man it sounds so good. Not sure if i should do new mufflers or put the resonator back on. It basically sounds like a race car.

I don't know how anyone drives these with the muffler delete alone. It's absolutely ridiculous- when I see an Audi with no mufflers I assume you're automatically some dipshit high school kid.
These engines are LOUD. The V8 with no nufflers? gimme a break..do you NEED that much attention? Does EVERYONE within 4 city blocks need to know you're coming?

Gut the cats, do the exhaust right or leave it; why make a spectacle of yourself?

Yeah I done goofed. I though I was going to have resonators on still, but its just straight pipes now. I need mufflers or a resonator ASAP. I'm afraid of CA smog testing without cats, so I was still trying to be cheap and make it loud. I cant even really get into the throttle because its just too much and i feel like a teeange dick again driving it. Taking it back to the shop and getting the resonator back on or maybe the same mufflers as OP.

    Because it’s glorious.

I loved the muffler delete on my red s6, though it was a bit droney at certain rpm.

On the rs6, it has the rear mufflers deleted and it’s about perfect. Loud enough when I get on it but not droney at all.

Maybe the solution is to add a few turbos ?

Finally got Magnaflow mufflers installed today. My car now has the stock system up to the x-pipe, then the resonators are deleted, and finally straight-through 14" MF mufflers. I'm pretty happy with noise right now for only spending $400 USD. It has a nice hearty growl, and it is not obnoxious anymore. Very minimal drone while cruising, and I feel it is just the right amount of sound to hear at all RPM. If anything it could be a little louder but maybe I just got used to the race-car noise of straight pipes.

Edit - I will try and get a clip of the noise when I get some time.

Unfortunately I haven't had time. Mine are still in boxes waiting to be installed. I will be keeping the mid resonators. I am worried it will be too quiet but I also drive a lot so I don't want drone.

Finally got around to installing the Magnaflow straight through mufflers and tips. It woke up the sound a little bit, sounds throaty and sporty but muted. Which is fine for now. This is my daily and I drive 75 miles round trip so I don't want to deal with horrible drone.

Later down the road once the Magnaflows are broken in, if I can't live with the sound, I will strongly consider removing those resonators.

It is. That is the plan too. The shop I went to said the heat shield was in the way and refused to do it. Not going back there but it will be at a shop while I am out of town for them to tuck it up 1-1.5".

Reserved for a good reason for now: I have a long commute and I take my dogs on road trips and I don't want to have them in there with hours of drone. This will get me by until I get a different dog hauler. At that point I can delete the center resonators or use the time inbetween to shop for a Miltek or RS6 SE take-off.

Agreed, I have branded myself several times even with the stock setup. Be careful when loading and unloading the hatch until you get them recessed some more, those pipes get hot.

Any idea if I can get a little more sound if I add some performance cats or resonators in the middle instead of just deleting them? I'd like more sound with minimal drone.

I will try to record some audio of my car for you. I have the same mufflers and a resonator delete. It has a little bit of drone at low RPM but practically none at cruising speed. It doesn't bother my Wife, and she is defiantly not a car enthusiast. In fact I don't even think she noticed the change at all.

It's already done now. Maybe next time add in your thoughts on my setup that I posted, recommendations, etc. and then post your stuff so it feels less hijacked.
