Hello, starting to mod my 09' 3.0t A6. Looking for a cold air intake.. but I'm not having the best luck. Any ideas?

Your car was designed with a cold air intake already.

Are you wanting more sound or finding that the car doesn't breathe well enough for your needs?

I did a lot of research on this and I found that all the after market intakes decrease performance

So if you want performance leave it how it is.

If you want noise (no problem with that) just get a roc euro or something

I wish there was an intake that used the stock cold air system but still. Made good sound

Are there any good upgraded filters that work with the stock intake? I assume one would have to plug the hole left by the resonator box?

    I don't think there's a thread. Doesn't seem like a very common mod.

    Play around with it.

That box just cancels sound through resonance, so blocking it off or stuffing it would be sufficient, I think.

It is fairly simple... just open up your airbox, remove the filter, and take out all the stuff inside. There should be a plastic skeleton w/ foam bits. Once thats removed reinstall everything.

Go ahead and have him remove the snow screen where the intake piping meets the grille area. If you don't need it, that is.

I don't know if your engine is the supercharged 3.0 TSFI. Those of us with that engine on several other platforms, S4, S5, SQ5, Q5 and some of the A6 models with that engine or the 3.2 normally aspirated engine are using an aFe drop in filter in the stock airbox. I don't know if your box is the same.

The filter (part number is in my signature below) is often paired with an 034 throttle body tube that runs from the air box to the throttle body. You will have to check with A6 users to see if you have the same size filter and throttle body hose. I'm just guessing. Please verify with someone familiar with your year model A6 whether it will fit your box. The throttle body hose eliminates the resonator that tunes out the supercharger whine and is very stiff, making it more resistant to collapse under intake vacuum.

But, if it fits, the is an oiled cotton gauze dual cone design that has been shown to flow significantly higher CFM and lower pressure drop than the stock filter. Even so, the stock filter we run flows extremely well, even in highly modified cars well beyond stage 2 dual pulley.

I have a 3.2 but the same should work on yours. My intake is great. It's like stock on normal driving but when you drive it spirited or just go WOT it's a nice deep intake roar. Exactly how I wanted it (one of these days I'm going to do an in-car video to show you guys). Clearly I'm not setting any speed records on my car, so I did my stuff purely for the sound . Here's what I did:

    - aFe dry air filter (get through Amazon/ ECS for high $60s)
    - Removed the snow screen (even in the winters here it doesn't snow enough to merit having it on)
    - Removed the intake tube's resonator and did a "ghetto-cap-off" to plug the hole (I'm sure there's better ways to do it, but it was a fun project in my garage so I just made it work with what I had laying around without spending a dime lol)
    - I cut a small 2"x2" hole on to the airbox on the side that faces the inner fender (so it's still fresh outside air... actually right next to where the airbox's vacuum-actuated intake flap is... so in essence I just added on to the existing design)

Here's pics. I lost the picture of the hole on the airbox with my old phone, but there's threads here of guys with A4s that have done the same if you want to check on that).

FYI- That's the cap from a can of brake parts cleaner. Perfect size. I sealed it in place with silicone. Once the silicone cured I went over it with JB Weld putty. And although it looks ugly as hell, you don't see it when it's installed since it faces towards the firewall/ bellhousing when it's installed, so I don't care lol.

You need to do new research then. Plenty of folks did controlled condition datalig testing on different intakes over the years and posted results.

Doesn't the 034 reinforced silicone throttle body tube from throttle body to stock air box do the same thing? It should fit all 3.0 TFSI engines.

Just add a high flow drop in filter and be done. If you have really high hp (beyond stage 2), then maybe drill a couple 2-1/2 or 3" holes in the sides of the air box away from the engine to supplement the built in cold air intake from the front grill.

the 034 thottle body tube needs to be modified to fit our cars. Actually its just taking out some material to make it fit. Before getting the Roc*euro intake I had the 034 tube, afe filter, and I gutted the airbox.

So in essence, if Im running a stock car but just looking for some better sound, I could get away with just doing an AFE drop in air filter, and removing the resonating foam from the airbox? (I need to keep the snow screen where I live)

Ordering parts now. Amazon says the filter won't fit my car, but I'll ask your words first.

I could get away with, on a 09 A6 3.0t, the filter you have listed and removing resonating foam? Or would I need a throttle body hose as well. Looking to keep the stock airbox, just want noise. Car is otherwise stock. And if it'll work, is the filter a direct fit? Or do I need to do any fabrication?

After a little research and digging into my intake, I can conclude: the PCV breather is connected to the MAIN intake ait filter, and unless anyone has any ideas for a second mini air filter for that... An aftermarket intake doesn't seem like i could make it work easily? Seems like some places online have "universal type" "mini crankcase vent filters" IMG_20190423_180020.jpeg

The throttle body hose as well. The plastic breather hose nipple on it is facing the wrong way for our cars on both the (S)Q5 and S4/5 hoses. If I can solve that, I can make a way around the other issue

Final resolution on the 034 hose? I am stage 2 and looking for a little SC whine in the family wagon. Based on vehicle location don't want to modify the airbox...
