My new 2016 Q5 plus tire question.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just took delivery of my Q5 yesterday w/22,500 mi on it. Drove about 200 mi to get home. Very nice ride. Well equipped w/ Premium Plus & Tech Pkg. Metallic white w/ beige. S.C. car all it's life so perfect condition.. Very pleased with my trip home.
Tires (oem) are more than 1/2 worn. Thinking of replacing w/ Conti LX20. Had them on previous ML. Factory size is 235/60/18. Do not want to chg wheel size. What do you think of either 245/60/18 or 255/55/18? Will they fit & clear bodywork? How much will this chg the ride /handling ?. Or should I stay w/oem size? Any other recommendations?
    ALL coments appreciated.

Congrats on the new machine. What's your motivation for exploring different sizes? Is there something you don't like about the 235/60?

From the driver's seat I'm not sure you'll notice a difference in either of the two alternatives. I suspect they'd both fit fine. The 245/60 will be a bit larger in diameter while the 235/55 shorter, with corresponding mild impact to speedo/odo readings. Because of the larger contact patch, you might see a barely perceptible decrease in fuel economy, and you might save three or four feet in a panic stop. Personally, when it comes time for replacement I'd stick with 235/60.

My '17 Q5 3.0 TFSI came with the 20" summer tire package with 255/45/20 tires. I'm not suggesting you buy new wheels. But the 20" wheels easily support 255 width rubber. The question is what maximum width will your current wheels support?

If your wheels can handle the width and there is a aspect ratio that gives you the correct height for the 18" rims, you will really see an improvement in handling by going to the 255 width.

I'm thinking that 255/55/R18 would be within one tenth of an inch of the same height, if your rims can handle it and there is a good tire choice available. There are tire gurus here who can help you in dealing with tires and rim sizes.

Conti's DWS All season is available in 255/55/R18. It is a better, more performance oriented A/S tire than what you are looking at, but also costs more. They have a very good reputation.

Upgraded my 13' Q to 275/40/20's and man the handling and grip is next level.
But that required a 20x9.5 wheel to run those. I know guys push to 295's as well with a wide enough wheel.

My tire guru says that 255/55/18 will fit. Same diameter as stock 235/60/18. What about possible tire rub when turning? The 255's are 1 inch wider than the stock 235's according to TireRack. If I go any further it will be to H&R sport springs. Have put H&R springs on 2 previous SUV's---MB ML & Q3. Great results with very little chg in ride quality. Has anyone gone with the 255/55/18? LET ME HEAR FROM YOU. I am 85+ & just want to still have some fun. Only drive 6-8000 mi/yr. Keep the comments coming.

I did 255's on my stock Q5's 19's for my winter setup. Not sure what the difference in offset is between the factory 18's vs 19's but I loved the upgrade to 255 for sure, and they fit just fine.

Those stuffing 295/30/22's in there have the same wheel wells as you.
