    Stage 3 impressions, SRM review.

Tonight I finally got my S6 back together and went for a 30 mile shake down drive. I went with EPL for the stage 3 beta tune and SRM for replacement turbos, inlets and downpipes. Not installed yet is a merc racing quad pass heat exchanger and "the pump mod" Sean at SRM is great to deal with, always got back to me or answered my calls or messages. The beta file from EPL is a dramatic improvement over the stage 2 tune I had previously. Anyone with blown up turbos before you give your money to Audi, check out the replacements available at a fraction of the cost at SRM. If you are doing the work yourself you can do a stage 3 build now right around 5k if you do it right and depending on what you already have. Thanks to the community for all the help on here.

That's great news, congrats! Very good to hear that EPL has a stage 3 tune going now as well, even if it's still beta.

Any pics of the SRM downpipes? Never knew they made them for our platform. Are they catted and do they cross over like the OEM downpipes or go straight back like APR and AMS?

They are not made by SRM he just re sells them. I believe they are the polish made ones you can find on Ebay. Full stainless, v band clamp in the middle and they are full length like APR just no cats. Dont mind the floor of the shop. It used to be a fiberglass and carbon fiber production room.

And less heat build up in that area that already gets hot with the turbos.

I have to say I was skeptical on the heat wrap. I only did from the turbo down to the flex pipe and you can actually touch the wrap after it's been running. You cant hold your hand on it, but you can touch it quickly and not get burned. It definitely keeps the Underhood temps down. I cant wait yo get the exchanger installed and clip that wire to the cooler pump. You can feel the heatsoak after 2 or 3 pulls.

Quick question but did EPL remove the O2 inefficiency codes for the stg.3 tune or are you still getting a CEL? Any fitment issues with those dp's?

Imagine how it affects flex pipe life. If it prevents heat from being dissipated from downpipes, it mens almost all the heat is passed to the further exhaust components which are (probably) not designed to handle so much. Couldn't it damage them?

Not sure how it would affect overall exhaust life, but I had my catless dp's on my 2.7TT wrapped for many years which endured all sorts of driving (couple track days, long road trips, weather) and had zero issues throughout the years, for me anyways. I've heard non stainless pipes can oxidize and rot a lot quicker which makes sense, especially if the wrap is getting wet a lot. The drastically reduced engine bay temps were fantastic though, and I'm sure really helped with components longevity.

They don’t remove the code. You got o2 spacers and CEL should go away

The exhaust upstream is the same material as used downstream. If straight off the downpipes can handle it why wouldn't the rest?

I have spacers made by vibrant with the smallest insert. I'm not getting a cel. But they didnt remove that or the speed limiter as fas as I know. That limits me on half mile events and top speed roll racing events. Maybe look into taking that out @chris@epl and @tony@epl ?

As far as the downpipes, they are beautiful, but there is no way in hell they are mating to my stock catback. If you had an S8 I'd say maybe. Mine ended up needing 7 inches taken out. Thankfully I have a band saw and TIG welder at my disposal so I was able to make it look like it never happened. I have a feeling I got a set for an S8 honestly. If I cut the factory catback I would have been clamping right on one of the bends and it would never have worked.

I was hoping EPL would have got rid of the O2 codes and the speed limiter, but I guess not. Probably for CARB compliance I would think, which makes me wonder how APR gets away with it? I've seen those dp's but wasn't able to find any info hearing they were infact stainless, good to know they are. It sucks to have to cut them, maybe they're a "universal" one for many different 4.0TT's to cut down on costs. Aren't Milltek dp's the same, and require cutting for fitment to factory exhaust? Anyways, great price on those dp's, and sounds like you have the tools and the skills to make it all work anyways. Great job on the car so far, I love seeing guys willing to get elbows deep in their vehicles.

I really like that set up Brian. I'm going to start moving in the same direction. Did you get the SRM ball bearing CHRA or the stock RS7?

I went with the basic RS7 turbos from SRM not the ball bearing units. So far I let 3 people drive the car. One is the sales manager and son of the dealer principal at the local audi dealer. He came back with a giant smile saying it was insane and faster than most of the cars he has driven. Second was a friend in the parts department that had a similar response. The 3rd is my local engine builder machine shop owner. He has a 13 mustang with a fully built engine and a roush supercharger. It runs low 11s and for years he has been taunting me saying bring me your best Audi and I'll beat it. He said after one pull his mustang didnt stand a chance and that "this car is just plain stupid" and "why does anyone need this in a big heavy sedan" needless to say all were impressed. I got the intercooler in this am, cut the pump wire and went for a ride. Not a super noticeable gain, but now back to back pulls the power isn't dropping off. I'm very pleased. I also burned out my 4 month old gas and topped off with some fresh 93. Time to go drive more and let it adapt.

Still where it was at EPL stage 2. They dont raise it like APR, nor do they remove the speed limiter. The speed limiter may hurt if you go to roll racing or standing half mile events. I wonder what their thought process is on that?

EPL make great software but they are way too early in the beta testing for stage 3 for my comfort zone at these power levels. The APR stage 3 software is insanely good. Car drives like it's stock but delivers 300hp over that level when you want it.

Well then I hope they’ve made significant improvements in the last month or two because their earlier performance results were quite poor, that’s all I’m going to say

I keep hearing this stuff and it makes me want to drive an APR stsge 3 car back to back. There aren't any local I can try. I'm anxiously awaiting EPL to drop a final revision for the tune. Otherwise the car feels pretty quick to me.
