hello guys,i'm a little stuck and can't sort out the abs.i get three beeps got a vcds and a full scan but can't find the cause of It. temporarily replaced the abs unit with the module with exact same number as mine to check if it will fix it but vcds could not communicate at all. so we swapped the abs unit again.i also have an aftermarket radio.
    any help is greatly appreciated
here is the log of the vcds.

Have you checked the wire harness?

I'd check the can wires between the abs module and ecu.

These cars use CAN for module to module communication but K line from the port to the modules.

Since you could communicate to the original module but the faults are for missing powertrain databus signals that is where you should probably start to look.

The second module not having any communication is a bit weird, but if you reinstall the first and regain diagnostic function of the ABS module then it would point to second module being defective, first one could be too but leave it in for testing the wires. Aftermarket radio shouldn't cause problems, in that if ecu and trans are talking it doesn't seem the radio is the problem, and the normal problem is shorting the radio to the k line, which seems fine.

On the bright side, your gauges all work, and you're getting decent mileage.

I looks to me like you have an ABS module in the car that is loaded with either older or newer version of software than the car originally came with and that version of software is expecting a different ECU software version. This could be the reason for the software version issue and inability to properly communicate with ECU because the protocol might be slightly different.

I see that the version of the ABS software is D10, while the one on my 2001 allroad is D47 and most of Audi S4 from 2000 have D46 version. Although you appear to have front wheel drive car? It sounds like your version is really old. Are you 100% sure that this D10 was operating properly before the failure or you inherited the issue with ABS from previous owner?

Anyway, post what exact car you have too so maybe parts lookup can shed some light on this.

Also... when you say that you swapped the the module, are you talking about just the pump module and/or the one under the passenger side carpet? The one under the carpet is responsible for communications and management of abs/esr/esp etc functions.

hi julex thanks for your reply
it is a front wheel drive audi a6 2.5 tdi produced in 1998
we bought this car second hand a year ago,me and two other friends drove it together to test it and there weren't any beeps for the abs.it surely had some problems with the wiring
in the comfort control module under the carpet of the driver but we fixed that and i also removed the rubber grommets under the battery and near ECU for the water leaks which are 99% the cause
of a big headache and the electronics. i know this because prior i have owned an audi a4 which was leaking water inside because of the clogged grommets.

when we swapped the abs unit meaning the abs pump and the module together which is near the engine under the hood.plugged my vcds and couldn't establish communication with abs

I randomly get an ABS errors as well. The weird/scary thing is when this happens my tail/brake lights go out and stop working! Seemed to happen more frequently when I use the fog lights, so guess what, I don’t use the fog lights anymore. Anyone else experience this? I’ll be interested to see how this thread plays out.

I had a similar problem, as strange as it sounds, try a throttle body alignment through vcds. I did this on a whim from when I had a throttle body issue.

After that completes, clear all the codes and see if that works.

You cannot perform a throttle body alignment on a diesel engine

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update, hence my abs problem is now finally fixed. as you can see from my first post, i had some other errors which i have always ignored (dont know why).as strange as it may sound it turned out that the airbag warning light has somehow interfered with the proper functioning of the abs. Once i cleared the airbag code and then cleared the abs code and the errors didnt appear again and the abs magicaly started to work.i should have done that long ago but anyway thats my story and thanks to all for your suggestions.i hope it can be of help to others as well. So make sure you enter each module separately and clear all the silly codes with vag com
