Stuck Intake valve.

When cleaning out the carbon from my intake valves. I noticed one of the valves are not opening. I pulled the intake and cleaned the carbon because the intake flaps broke. Has anyone had this issue?

is this before or after you put it back together because its possible to slide the intake back on with the flaps out of position and then they wont move but if its the unit itself the the actuator could be broken inside

I'm installing a new manifold. The valve that's stuck is the intake valve in the cylinder head

I would say that there is an issue with either the cam or a lifter. Both valve should be open the same. You should pull the valve cover and inspect the area for that valve.

Could be any one of a number of things. Definitely requires thorough inspection. How did you determine the closed one is the problem? Were you turning it by hand?

From what I have read about the 5.2L V10 engine, this seems to be quite unusual.

It's got just around 100k. I cant find any info where this happend to someone else so I'm guessing this is a rare instance. It looks like I'm going to need a new camshaft and rocker. I just wish I could figure out why that happend.

That’s interesting: it would be indeed best to find out the reason, did you check the compression/leak down of this, actually all cylinders? This can rule out a bent valve/tell you more about the engine health...
Also is that a crack in the cylinder head between the 2 intake valves?

I highly doubt it is a crack. I think it is just a casting seam left over when the engine block was cast. My S6 has the same seams there.

I would also be concerned about your other cam as well. I see a bit of scaring on there and looks like some scaring on the head as well. I will tell you this. I would look around for some loose hardware. I build engines for a living and if I was a gambling man, I would suspect that someone on the assembly line dropped a bolt, nut, something in the head during assembly. We’ve seen this kind of quality issue happen with with engines we build, although extremely rare, this is the type of damage that can occur. Or, just could of been a bad rocker, someone didn’t set the tapets on the valve properly, or didn’t adjust the valve clearance enough. Considering the V10 is not a widely used engine, I am sure Audi’s assembly people may of just made a mistake from not building enough of that engine. But, sluth around. Loose bolts in the cam area cause lots of damage.

Someone has definitely been in there before. If you look at the bottom picture, clearly someone had put a wrench or pliers on the lower cam. You can see the scar/marks from this. I would bet who ever was in there previously did not install things quite correctly.

Looks like residual damage from the rocker thrown around while the engine (was) running. Looks like it let go at idle.

See what you mean though. Its possible was the OP or original owner/repair shop getting rockers out previously. The oil tho, synthetics tend to stick to walls and parts.

It looks like the rocker caused that damage. That's where I found the rocker right under that camshaft. It looks like the previous owner might have drove with the car like that for awhile. When I did the carbon cleaning the valve with the missing rocker had a noticeable amount more carbon then the one working.

If your engine code is BXA (if not send me the code/VIN) then according to Audi (from Erwin/ElsaWin) the engine/trans has to be removed.
Even so it maybe possible to do it without, maybe ask the guy who made the video :-)

It doesn't look like this is possible. There is not room to remove the rear cam covers. You also would need to remove the cam phasers and the timing chain and again it does not look like there is any room to do this.

A local guy here in South Africa pulled the V10 from his S6. He made up a replica type scissor lift frame that Audi uses when they remove it. Here's the link to his thread about it: https://www.vwclub.co.za/forum/viewt...?f=11&t=194967

Received a clynder head from the junk yard today. Going to swap the camshaft out of it when I get the motor out. Came with a valve cover, fuel injectors and some other extras.

Some motor pull pics. I have my own lift in the garage. So my plan is to drop the engine trans and subframe onto jack stands and then lift the car off of it. I will do the work and the. Lower the car engine will sit back where it was.

I bought the car with this issue non running . The body and interior are really nice with the exception of rock chips in the front bumper. Found it leaking bad looks like the oil filter housing seal. Tires are worn bad and will need upper and lower control arms.

I'm debating on how far I want to go as far as maintenance. I will probably just fix what I know is leaking.
