Exclamation Car won't recognize the key because of the Steering Column Lock Actuator

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi everyone, for the first time in the 6 and half years of ownership my 2007 AUDI A6 3.2L car did not start yesterday. I just got done doing some preventative maintenance on the car. Rear brakes and rotors control arms and a coolant leak which was not a cheap fix least to say. Now I have this problem and I don't know what to do. I pulled the VAG codes from my vehicle and it seems like it is the steering column actuator. I don't know what route to take. Usually I can digest these issues but the car won't even start unless I clear the codes from Address 05 and the car gets power and turns on.

I read this on RossTech forums, I don't understand much of it so i don't know what all it is i have to do or what kind of costs i am looking at.

"In order for the ignition to turn 'on' and for the vehicle to be authorized to start the [J518 - Access/Start Control Module] needs to
1st see a valid key from the [E415 - Access/Start Authorization Switch] (where the Key is inserted.

Next the [J518 - Access/Start Control Module] checks the condition and response from the [N360 - Steering Column Lock Actuator],
if all is okay, the vehicle will turn 'on' and start.

If any one of the above are NOT correct, like the key can not be read or there is a failure with the N360, you have a 4,729 lb paper
weight (depending on model chosen and available options at the time of purchase, subject to change without prior notice), until one
of the above can be corrected. This is not including any other J518 concerns, such as loss of poor/ground, faulty controller or other issues."

    http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthre...004-D3-A8-4-2)

I can start it and drive. I did that yesterday and the problem seemed to have temporarily went away. After leaving it over night and trying to start it again today I was presented with the same issue again. I cleared to codes and drove to work and I am sure this temporary solution is not gonna work for long until I am stranded. My main question here is what do I need to replace or fix for this damn car up and running again. It's just unfortunate timing when I just spent all this $ on it fixing it recently and preventative maintenance. Thank You in advance.

I have read a lot on this issue and they mention replacing the whole steering column which mean keys will need to be reprogrammed. Or Fixing the Access Start Authorization Control Unit. I want to know what my options are. By your suggestion if the immobilizer is removed and rebuilt it should resolve me problem? Another thing i read on Audizine forum is https://audizine.com/forum/showthrea...y-full-of-cars

"k so I just got off the phone with an Audi specialist shop and they told me that if I take the column apart and remove the steering wheel locking solenoid the problem will not come back. Although the steering will not lock anymore when you take the key out but the car wont know that and no more codes.."

At this point i could care very less if the steering wheel locks or not...
In the last 24 Hours i managed to find this being the cheapest solution...

    http://www.speedosolutions.com/Audi-...vice_p_77.html
These guys will apparently rebuilt the unit and keep the eeprom preserved to avoid flashing keys to the new unit. A member from vwforums in France had his shipped there and gave it 5 stars.
Please advise the best route to take on this issue Thank you.

As said, sounds like an immobilizer issue. All that jazz from Ross-Tech is basically telling you how the immobilizer works, which is several parts (including the chip in the key, the cluster, the ECU, and sounds like the column). If on1wheel01 can give you the details, I'd go down that route.

I am also having a starting problem that is slightly different. Something is preventing the ECU, TPMS, and headlight range computers from getting power. My A6 will start momentarily but shuts off immediately. The column lock works fine.

Can you post your entire auto scan using brackets? I’m curious to see if you have any other faults.

I’ll scan it again when it happens later on today. Once I clear the code in address 05 the car has no fault codes.

On my old C6 Audi replaced the entire steering column twice under warranty. There is a TSB on the issue.

I had my immobilizer rebuilt by Speedo solutions. They have a eBay ad or you can just go through the website. You gotta be careful removing the immobilizer. You must be able to unlock the actuator to remove it from the steering column. If you can’t unlock it you can send the whole column in as well. You send that and one key in and they take care of it. Great service and much cheaper than the dealer. That’s how I got the car so stupid cheap from previous owner.

The car started today, so I did not have the faults that were present due to the immobilizer not working. But there were some faults that were not there before such as the door warning light. Any how here is the full scan.

Great service and much cheaper than the dealer. That’s how I got the car so stupid cheap from previous owner.
Thank you on1wheel01, I also found that website and they are asking $400 with a 3-5 day turn around on the service. The only issue here is I am not a professional mechanic so I am not entirely sure i can remove the damaged part from the vehicle it self. I wish they had something like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/VAG-Drive-B...4383.l4275.c10 for my cars model. But i can follow directions and if they are comfortable enough I am confident i can take it apart and send it in for repair to speedo solutions. If i were to go this route are there any proper DIY instructions to remove it. Because i don't want to break the damn car trying to fix it.

That is just terrible these nice cars have such stupendous issues. Unfortunately I have no warranty it ran out couple years ago.

I couldn’t find a diy what so ever, so I just went at it. But I am pretty mechanically inclined. It’s really not that hard of a job. If you plan to drive it as is for awhile keep your laptop with cable. So you can unlock it when it goes again. 3-5 days would have been great lol they had my module for a month. I called a few times and they said just very busy. Hey I get that no biggie it is a spare car so no problem. Very nice company to talk to and very very helpful. If I remember right they say in the eBay ad they can give directions on how to remove the part.

Thank you on1wheel01, I appreciate all the information. I can take things apart and put them back together provided I have proper instructions and if I am not comfortable with the procedure I can always take it to the mechanic and have him remove it for me vs paying dealer ship prices. I can’t imagine the costs probably around $2500. I definitely have the laptop handy and the vag cable is permanently plugged in the obd connector till I can get it fixed. I plan to keeping the vehicle. Actually got an alignment scheduled this Tuesday. I hope it doesn’t crap on them. I drove it today and it drove just fine but since it guaranteed defective I have to get it fixed I don’t want to carry my laptop around all the time just to get the vehicle started. You also said that

“You gotta be careful removing the immobilizer. You must be able to unlock the actuator to remove it from the steering column. If you can’t unlock it you can send the whole column in as well.”

I am assuming the instruction will be provided by them on doing that as well. I am going to contact them Monday morning and get all that information. I will definitely update the thread on which route I take to fix this issue.

P.S. The led from deAutoled went out the next day, could this just be a coincidence or I could have an electrical issue on my hand. I am only concerned because we had some heavy rain here last week and there was some flooding I had to drive through some water on the highway something must have busted and there was a good amount of water but that was over a week ago. I can't be sure the amount of water there was but the car drove through it just fine It may have barely touched the under carriage but I am not sure because I haven't had any issues with the vehicle. I'd like to believe I am just unlucky withe immobilizer issue because that's much easier to fix vs finding an electrical issue at least I'd like to think so . I'll have it checked out when it's on the alignment rack on Tuesday.

Thanks again for all the input.

Got the car back today. I used speedometer solutions to have the column repaired. I had a shop remove the whole column and I sent it in. Tom was very helpful and quick and took care of it in less than 24 hours because I paid the extra $99 for the 24 hour service turn around. I only have one issue, my steering wheel buttons will not work and the steering wheel buttons are not lighting up either. I scanned the car with the VCDS this is the fault code. There are no other fault codes so I am only posting the one.

I read this on ross tech about the problem
    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/02071

I am not sure what could be wrong but I am going to call the shop and have them fix it but any ideas what could possibly be the problem, I am hoping it is just a faulty connection to a wire?
