    Cargo Space

Looking at replacing my 07 A4 Avant daily driver and the idea of a First Gen (facelift) Q5 has come to mind. I love my avant and hate the idea of giving it up but it's starting to age and I'd like to be in something new(er). One point of question is the cargo space in the Q5. Specs I am seeing show it's only about 1cu ft smaller, but I was wondering what the reasonable length of the cargo space is. By "reasonable length" I mean the length of the cargo space from the front seats to the rear hatch with the back seats folded down. My avant offers quite a bit of cargo space, but I imagine the Q5 keeps the volume close because its a taller space than anything. Any info/data/sources of info that you may have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I can fit a 6-foot ladder in the back, along with a bunch of other stuff.

I can't offer raw or quantifiable data, but I can say that I made this exact move. The Q is wonderfully sized. Lengthwise, the gains are realistically minimal. Rear passenger leg room is better, but not by much. Cargo space with rear seats up...same. Cargo space with rear seats down....you get the picture. I notice the gains in width, and obviously in height. When carrying passengers, the easier in/egress (vs the B7) makes up for the fact that things really aren't much roomier. (Although the ability to move the seat fore & aft is nice.) When loading and unloading cargo, the same obviously applies. Aside from the higher initial lift, this effort is a breeze. I haul music gear more than anything else, always with a smile. Ditto for cat & dog food and supplies, and standard household stuff. All three of my dogs (two are ~ 80lb shepherd mixes, the third is a ~ 50lb 'runt') fit comfortably with the rear seats down.

In a perfect world, my fantasy Q has maybe a 3" - 4" wheelbase extension, if only because I'm now at an age where I actually care if my rear seat passengers are comfortable. Otherwise, I love the form factor and in my case this was the perfect 'next step' from the B7 Avant. Good luck...

Mine swallowed up a new boxed 55" (diagonal measurement) flat screen TV with lots of room to spare both length and width. Did not measure anything.

Thanks for the response. Hearing from someone who's made the exact jump I'm looking at is perfect. The fact it will fit a 6ft ladder is very encouraging and compares well against my avant.

My SQ5 fits more than my A6 Allroad did....
I brought home a 6 foot double tool box (2pc) in one trip (seats moved forward, but I still made it)

Seems like finding a Q5 I'm interested in will be harder than I thought. Working on a bit of a budget, so that's not helping... but hoping to get the right one sooner than later. Ideally I'd love to get a 13+ Premium Plus S-Line 3.0t with B&O... but that's looking to be a tall ask.

Maybe it's psychological but I've always felt my B6 Avant had a deeper rear trunk space with the rear seats up. Width is about the same. I really appreciated the lower profile of the Avant for loading larger items or simply just sitting on edge of the trunk where my feet don't have to dangle. Only thing I didn't like about the Avant was that heavy retractable screen/partition. That thing was a pain in the rear to remove whenever I had larger items to load as it was really heavy.

I use the roof rails for ladders and lumber runs from the hardware store and it works great every time. But to sum it up the interior space of the Q5/SQs are about the same, if not, identical to the Avants. Just higher.
