'01 A4 1.8T Manual Front Outer CV Joint Part Number?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone know where I can get a GKN brand front outer CV joint for the facelift 1.8T Manual cars? It's AWM so I know it needs a larger cv joint for the larger wheel bearing that facelift has. However don't see anything on ECS or FCP.

    Is it this? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-vw-96-...oAAOSwHgdaskIQ

Why does everyone keep listing 96-01 fitment?? The '01 facelift cars have a larger front wheel bearing.

Edit: did the prefacelift 2.8 cars have the larger front wheelbearing? That may explain the listing.

    Yes.

The size of the wheel bearings and CV joints does not have anything to do with the "facelift" update in '99.5. It has to do with factory horsepower. The V6 cars (172HP and later 190HP) all got the large outer CV's for the entire B5 production run, 96-01. The cars with 150HP or less (specifically the '97-00 1.8T AEB and ATW) got the smaller joints. In 2001, the 1.8T AWM cranked the boost to dizzying heights and was rated at 170HP. This is obviously greater than 150HP, so it got the larger joints. Basically, it got the V6 joints. In fact, AWM axles are just regular V6 axles. They even carry the same part numbers.

    @Walky_talky20.

That outer CV joint which I believed was for my car, was too large. Tone ring and outer spline where it meets the hub were the same size (I think), but the inner spline where the joint connects to the center axle portion was too large. No way they were supposed to fit together. I seem to vaguely recall a discussion about hollow and solid shafts and perhaps this is where I got mixed up?

For reference, the part number on the axle center bit (the skinny shaft part) is 8D0 407 271 AH. I don't know what joint I need to get. I tried looking up the part number and just getting discontinued.

I think this might be it? Much more expensive however.

    GKN is something like $150.

I found a "Metelli" brand here which they are claiming is OEM? Anyone heard of "Metelli" as OEM supplier?

My sincere apologies. My "yes" was in response to the question "did the prefacelift 2.8 cars have the larger front wheel bearing?". I failed to visit your ebay page and check the part numbers. I should have done that, and my answer suggests that I did that. I did not, and I am very sorry about that. It looks like they accept returns within 30 days, which is good. And Paypal will cover your return shipping for free.

If I was going to purchase a replacement outer CV joint from my 2001 1.8T AWM 5MT quattro car, I would purchase: 8D0-498-099-C

(What I would actually do is purchase a used genuine 2.8 quattro 5MT axle from the local junkyard for $25)

No problem Walky, I think I had already purchased before I even saw your response.

I know what's wrong here though. 3 years ago I replaced the CV boot with the wrong boot....A boot for the S4 Axle which has a larger CV joint (albeit the same 82mm wheel bearing).
so the boot was not tight (how did I miss this.....) and the grease has slowly leaked out and the joint it ruined. It's a bronze color now.

So I went and bought a new joint, which was also wrong, and for the S4 and the large boot...

Finally today I received the 8D0498099C CV joint. GKN made in germany right on the box. I am thrilled but bells are ringing back to 3 years ago...This one came with three washers in it. All different sizes and I think I need to put all of them on the shaft however I don't know the order? I say bells ringing because 3 years ago I remember losing one of the old washers (or thinking that something went flying and that I don't know what it was). So I only put two washers back on from the new and incorrect CV kit (which only came with 2 washers also...)

How do the 3 washers go on the shaft (belleville, thrust, etc?)?

Also curiosly, the CV joint came with an external Hex head axle bolt...The axle bolts that are in the car now are the 17mm Allen key ones....I do have a spare 17mm allen so just going to use that one as I think it looks nicer than the hex head...
