    Black optics conversion S6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Trying to source black optics window trim for my c7.5 s6. Any ideas? Do not think vynil is for me. Wil a6 trim work? Junkyards maybe?

What does one do with the chrome on door handles?

Anyone ever take the chrome strip off the trunk? Can it be buffed and look good or does it need repainted?

Is it cheaper to have the trim painted at an Autobody shop? Seems like it wouldn’t be bad to do considering the oem price of trim is crazy.

Appreciate the feedback or pictures from those that converted.

Why won't you just vinyl it?

Black Vinyl wrap works well on the chrome trim. I had someone wrap my b8 s4 window trim & it still looked good after 6 years.

Interesting. I guess I just don’t understand the durability. I watched a you tube video and it looked like a sticker and I don’t want it to look like shit after 6 months.

Any reputable shops in Texas that someone could recommend ? Specifically Houston if possible?

My S7, all chrome, wrapped in Matt black, including lower mirror, with a carbon cap fitted.
2.5 years in and no issues/peeling etc. A good wrapper, knows how to do it properly

Try BKS tuning- they often have OEM parts less expensive than going thru Audi. Also, the chrome trim piece at teh bottom of the trunk lid can come off using a hair dryer or heat gun and fishing line. You can then clean off the remaining glue, leaving a perfect finish. Painting it will be prone to chipping, leaving tiny flashes of chrome you can see from a mile away. Eventually, you'll have the same issue with a wrap, but good ones can last a long time.

I had mine wrapped by a pretty reputable shop, and it looked better than ok, but it wasn't perfect nor did it rise to my expectations. I bought the gloss black from BKS for 1100. including shipping across the pond. I didn't post a pic, since you can not tell in photos any difference. But your eye can.

I’ve looked at the BKS site a few times for the A7 trim. How easy was it to remove/fit the new parts?

That’s why I am considering having it painted. Has to be cheaper and should look just as good. I’m going to get a quote Monday.

    0 chance I pay 1100 for trim.

Also - wonder if you can use a6 trim? If so, there hs to be junkyard cars with the trim. Just don’t know where to start on that.

By the time you have a shop R&R, prep, and paint. you'll be close anyway. Do the math, not much savings IMO. Maybe being in TX might help, labor costs in MN are high.

I had a local shop repair and repaint an entire fender on my wife’s car with pearl paint and the entire job was $500. Hoping for a good quote. Maybe $350? I’ll report back.

You will be super pissed when the paint chips, which will happen early and often, and the old chrome shines through at you from across a parking lot- I’ve been there. $1100 for all the trim is actually a good deal, considering it is warrantied and won’t have the same issues presented by wrapping or painting. Good luck with whichever you choose

Sucks. The black optics upgrade is so cheap at time of purchase. Afterwards it’s crazy expensive.

I agree- I’m an idiot twice over- I didnt get a car with black optics to start with, and paid thru the nose for Audi retail before I knew any better to get the OEM black optics trim to replace the chrome. BKS is a MUCH better option, but still not cheap. If I had to choose vs vinyl or paint, I’d choose vinyl- areas that wear or chip can be redone without temoving the trim from the car. To paint things correctly, there’s a fair bit of labor in removing the trim off the car and then putting it back on, adding to the overall expense.

I just had a local shop quote me to wrap my window trim as well in satin black and the want $200, much cheaper than replacing with OEM black optics. I am on the same boat with the chrome on the door handles. They are going to wrap the top chrome on the door handles as well for an additional $100, I'll see if I like it, not sure how it's going to turn out. If I don't like it, I'm going to order new pieces and have them painted to match when I get the RS6 bumper from BKM. Going to do the swap when Sean and I do the pump upgrade and APR heat exchanger since the bumper has to come off anyways. Out with the old in with the new

The window trims are prohibitively expensive in many cases and not the easiest to ship safely or install once received. Generally vinyl wrapping by a reputable source is the easiest and most cost effective. The trims are available for all models if anyone really wants to go the OE route, PM or email for prices: [email protected]

The door handle trims for the black optic cars come as primed/ready to paint pieces and are not expensive. Also available and can be priced by contacting via PM or email above.

Other post-facelift black optic items available here:

Any questions or other needs just let me know.
