    X-Pipe or Downpipe first?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Title says it all, what are your experiences with just an X-pipe or just a non-res downpipe? For example, AWE's non-res downpipe vs ECS x-pipe in terms of volume gain and drone control.

That's what I was thinking to do first, most budget friendly but it requires a cut, whereas the downpipe is bolt-on.

Pedro, did you cut yours by yourself and do you have any regrets to where you would want to go back to stock?

When I watch this video Audi RS5 Resonator Delete vs Centre Muffler Delete it seems to me the downpipes get more high strung and the center x-pipe keeps deeper tone to it. I know no youtube video will do it justice. My plan is to do the X-pipe for the volume for now and I am going to do a full downpipe back exhaust next summer once I save up for it.

I also ordered a Scwaben exhaust cutter with the X-pipe to do it myself on ramps in my driveway. Scwaben Exhaust Cutter

This is a topic for a whole other discussion but after looking at ALL the exhaust options for the car including JHM and VelocityAP I have decided on Kline Innovations from Romania. They already told me the price and options and how much shipping to the US will be so its just a matter of saving up. 2013 Audi RS5 WOT Acceleration - Kline

Also have a ECS X pipe, you can’t beat it for the price. Deeper tone than stock, but I will say that it does leave you thirsting for more sound.

That's why it's not a means to an end for me, I want more than stock sports exhaust but can't afford a $3000+ exhaust yet.

If you want "more sound" from your RS5's than just that ECS x-pipe, just have a ship weld up some pipes from the x-pipe back and remove the two rear mufflers as well. My S5's exhaust set up currently is factory headers, cats, and down pipes. Custom x-pipe, and then straight piping after that. No mufflers. Plenty loud when you want it to be, but nice and comfortable for cruising without being intrusive.

    - - - Updated - - -

The price to have that done should be relatively cheap.

You don't have to choose one or the other, you can do both in one shot!

Our downpipes have an XPipe built in: http://www.velocityap.com/Audi-RS5-E...dirs5xpipe.htm

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that still leave the middle section with the resonator?

Stuart, Don't make me drive up there and pick one up :D

Delsangre, yes they leave the center one in, this is like an AWE but with an x for better flow.

I just installed the ECS X-Pipe on my lunch break at work. (I work in a weld shop). In summary my 30 min break turned into a 1.5 hour install and I skipped eating.

ECS instructions are basically bullshit unless you have a lift. There's almost no way to use a sawsall with such a low car on just ramps. So I took the whole rear section out including unplugging the valves and I unbolted all the hangar mounts from the floor instead of trying to get the rubber of lying on my back. Once out I made nice straight cuts and put it back in peices like the directions say. Re assembly was fairly easy but one hangar bolt also goes through the fuel tank strap.

The end result is open downpipes is absolutely orgasmic and the X-Pipe really really wakes up the car. It can be louder as most already say and it's not super deep but it sounds awesome! I'll get back to yall about drone.

Basically quiet is like stock, and flaps open sounds sooooo good!

Just a word of caution - if you do go AWE non-res downpipes to stock cat back you may have some issues with car running. Seems like the non-res DP's flow better than stock and exhaust gets bottlenecked at the center resonator causing car to misfire and throw lean codes on Bank 1 and Bank 2. I could not keep it a solid idle. At least thats what I have experienced in my case. Running OEM DP with ECS X-pipe worked just fine as did AWE Non-res Paired with the X-Pipe.

What were your thoughts on both the x-pipe and downpipe?

How does the x-pipe attach to the cuts? Do you weld it?

NON-Res DP + ECS Xpipe = Very Loud and Raspy paired with the OEM Sports Exhaust. Valves closed sounds stock.
X-Pipe has exhaust sleeves the slide over both ends of the cuts to join them together. No welding required and completely reversible to go back to stock.

No it ships with two of the same OEM Audi exhaust clamps that attach the center section to the downpipes. You make cuts, put the X-pipe up in place and tighten the now 4 exhaust clamps. Pretty seamless install.

    Awesome thanks to you both!

Croltean, I definitely have heard both as very raspy. The nice thing about both is it gives you the full exhaust potential with non-res for the future. Would you recommend the first one as x-pipe or downpipe?

OH awesome with those sleeves, you can just put the res section back on that's good to know.

I would do the x-pipe and call it a day unless you go full exhaust. Like I mentioned if you do non res DP’s on stock catback you may throw some lean codes as the exhaust flow is altered and you may have drivability issues. My RS5 did not like that set up. Currently I am running non-res and xpipe- I like how loud it is, but I hate the rasp. I am looking at AWE Track Extreme as it cuts down some of the raspiness.

Forgot to add- if you plan on installing the downpipes yourself. Save yourself the frustration and get the AWE DP tool. There is literally no room to get to the passenger side top bolt. Make sure you soak bolts in some penetrating oil prior the removing them.

Mine didn’t like it at all. The car would stall at idle and got p0171 and p0174. Once I took out the center res and replaced with x-pipe all issues went away

My setup will be VAP valved exhaust (with optional Xipe in the centre instead of a resonator) with AWE Non res DP.

[I don't mean to thread hijack]
Is anyone familiar with the Stasis exhaust system. I recently acquired a b8 s5 that had Stasis pkg installed. I'm not sure what it fully incorporates...I do have the drone from 800-2600 or so but its quite tolerable. I'm wondering what I should look at underneath and what could add just a little more growl but not being overly obnoxious and crackly. Thanks!
