    Unplug A6 3.0t PCV Valve

    Hello,

    I have a 2009 a6 3.0t and I think I have a bad PCV valve. I burn 1 qt a week....

    I also have a CEL that shows no code... I think it is likely oil burning related.

    Is it safe to just unplug the pcv valve? I heard that you only need it for emissions reasons.

    Could I unplug it for... track use... and then replug it for normal driving?

    And if so how difficulty would this be and what would need to be done to redo it again?

    the PCV is under the supercharger, and requires you to take the supercharger off to get to it. There is a port that goes right into the supercharger that you would have to build a blocker plate for, and then two ports that come out the back that you would have to plug up, or run to a catch can.

    If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, it is not a terrible job to replace it.

    Okay - so in terms of work required it sounds almost identical to doing a PCV replacement - am I correct in this understanding?

    No, you can't do that on these cars. For one you'll get a vacuum leak as well as not allowing the crankcase to vent properly since you're removing a vacuum source. What you can do is add a catch can to help capture the oil that is being consumed, but it won't fix the root cause if you're consuming oil because your PCV is faulty. To replace the oil separator you have to remove the supercharger.

    Okay can you explain what the functional difference between a good and bad pcv is? I guess I just don't even understand

    Are there any tutorials for changing the PCV valve? I've never even changed my oil before...

    The PCV aka oil separator removes the airborne oil vapors that are created by the engine and recirculates it back into the intake so it can be burned again for emissions purposes. This is the part number for the PCV: 06E103547AC

    I'm not finding the DIY I bookmarked specifically for the PCV, but the hardest part is the removal of the supercharger. Here's a bunch of stuff that outlines the general process:

    So I have been researching it and I think if I cut hose between pcv and intake and then block intake side and leave the other side open it will just blast that gas into the engine bay

    Is this true?

    I would replace it, if not yourself, I'm sure there is a local VW/Audi shop that would be able to do the work for a reasonable price.

    I just did mine, and I had to buy the crossover coolant pipe that goes over the top of the PCV as well as the oil pressure sensor. So mine was a little over $300 doing it myself. If you don't know when the thermostat and water pump were done, some say do those while you are at it because you have the super charger off, but honestly it only takes 15 minutes to get the super charger off, so not that big of a deal to me.

    I also recommend replacing this breather tube at the same time, it's virtually impossible to do this without the supercharger removed.

    Long story short, if you're doing the oil separator/PCV, at a minimum replace the thermostat and this breather tube at the same time. I'd inspect your intake valves to see how the carbon build up looks because if it's a significant amount, this is the time to take care of it while the supercharge is off. Don't forget you will need all new injector o-rings, upper and lower intake manifold gaskets regardless of the other items since these need to be replaced each time you remove the supercharger.
