    B8.5 A4 owners EPC recall

Did anyone else receive the recall letter today?

Also why are they saying that repairs will not be able to be done till the end of the year? Is it because they are trying to come up with maybe the new software to fix it or are they going to have to fabricate new revised pumps ?

Yes lol, I’m just wondering whether if this is a big deal or not. If that coolant pump goes bad from here on out up until they start replacing them, what can happen to the car mechanically. And hypothetically if the coolant pump was actually bad on my car and it caused other issues would they fix those as well even if it is out of warranty? Just wondering because I’ve never been through a recall process with Audi.

A software update is not going to fix a short circuit problem. They will be replacing the pump.

The letter says to park your car outside until the repair, so *if* the pump short circuits and the stars align, your car could burn to the ground in smoldering heap of ash. Unlikely, but still a CYA from Audi. Mine sits outside anyway, so I'll patiently wait for the parts to show up. If it burns to the ground, hopefully it doesn't take my Suburban with it.

    Wow.

Received the letter. Skimmed it. Didn't notice the Park your car outside as it may spontaneously catch fire and burn to the ground part.

    WTF.

Yes. This is basically them on the hook for coolant pump failure and any other problems it "may" cause.

My vehicle isn't affected by this recall, but couldn't you just unplug the pump to not worry about the risk of fire until they have the parts?

I tried looking for a thread related to this issue but I could not find it, sorry not everyone has time to scroll through pages of threads looking for something.

Ok, because my engine actually blew at around 49k miles but they denied my warranty cause it had an APR tune (TD1) flag. Before all this happened, I called in and told them that the EPC light came on once but went away after, they told me to bring it in once I got back home from college since there was no Audi around there. The car ended up blowing on the way back home. So I am not sure whether that could have been the culprit of the problem.

Impossible to tell now, but when you say blew... blew how? Did you overheat and blow your head gasket? Did your timing belt tensioner go out and throw timing out of sync? Did a spark plug tip break loose and score the cylinder walls? Did a piston ring or ring-land break?

The first one is really the only scenario where the coolant pump could have played a factor.

When you posted this thread it was literally 3 threads above the original recall thread, it would have taken all of about 10 seconds...

Why do the coolant pumps run with the ignition off anyway?

Audi said it was an internal mechanical failure, pistons gave out apparently and the metal shavings of the pistons were found in the oil pan.

Obviously not because the recall is NOT for the EPC light.

Had you taken the time to read the letter you would have found your answer to what the issue is and not solicit an attempt for responses to information already posted here.

Just like @b6onboost, I skimmed it and immediately posted it thinking in the best interest of other B8.5 owners who had no idea this was going on. It is obviously the coolant pump which triggers the EPC light, which in my case I have seen that light come on before. I came here for answers and possible scenarios that could cause that light to be triggered and what else it could cause around it to break, not to hear smart ass comments like yours.

Then you should have posted that in the first place asking about what triggers the light. Matter of fact, had you read the notice you received in the mail, you would have got your first answer as to one of the items that triggers said light.

And as far as smart ass comments, you don't like it, don't post stupid shit and you won't get any. /thread.

This is supposed to be a community that helps one another for the benefit of all. It would have been easy for you just to link the other thread instead of bitching about another post talking about the same thing. Why all the hostility in all of these threads? We're all here for the same thing and that is we love and care about our Audis.

These are electric after run coolant pumps. They make sure the engine is not above temp when the car is parked. This is not the same as your normal mechanical water pump.

My comment specifically says it would have been easy to JUST link the post instead of bitching. I saw that you linked your post, so I'm saying you could have left it there a not followed with the hostility. Seems like you were the one that didn't read.

Exactly....... instead of just linking his original thread he had to approach the situation in the most inefficient matter and act like a child. I guess it is against forum guidelines now a days to come in here and inquire about general questions, especially ones that affect a number of users that had no idea there was even a recall on this "bullet proof" b8.5 motor.
