Most Restrictive Part of the B9 RS5 Exhaust?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've seen numerous folks on here posting the center resonator delete on the B9 S5 & A5, but leaving their OEM rear mufflers intact.
Does that mean that the center resonator/muffler is the most restrictive portion of the exhaust system overall?

The RS5 sport exhaust has a little bit different setup with the 2 separate downpipes/resonators and cats collecting into 1 larger pipe
before the center resonator, and separating back into 2 separate pipes to the rear mufflers.

Given the experience several have seen on past models and current S5, would taking out the center section of the Audi Sport exhaust
(where it is single merged pipe) and doing an X-pipe instead with 2 pipes all the way be the best bang for the buck to let the beast breathe easier?

That center section looks like a goof!!

I saw this RS5 video which had only done a center resonator delete and it posted up an incredible time of 11.667s in the 1/4...
    ....and sounds good..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm7w...mYLAq&index=44

I'm not looking to spend thousands on a completely new exhaust, just looking for better sound without alot of cruising drone, and want it to breathe better for improved
performance when I modify the air filter and install a tune later.

Opening the dialogue to the forum for insight and suggestions...............

    Thanks.

The cats are the most restrictive part.

Specifically the pre-cat warm up. Piggies would do this platform well.

FYI, Supersprint has released cat delete pipes as well as a full exhaust.

For the RS5, I can understand the price assuming it's unique to the RS5. But if it's shared with the S5, that's crazy expensive.

I'm just not sure how much of the exhaust is similar/shared between the RS5 and S5.

They have parts for both cars.

I was just looking at the catted ones because the ECU has yet to be cracked on these cars so the idea of going stage 2 with a CEL delete is unlikely. Burger said they wont be offering a way to remove the CEL. In my state, that means I cant pass yearly inspection with any catless solutions installed.

I worry about the quality of aftermarket cats though. Some that I've seen from other manufactures don't hold up as well.

You're probably aware, but Milltek makes a cheaper catted downpipe for your S5 (still $1,800).

Supersprint uses HJS cats. Very high end. But a price to match.

Thank you both. I wasn't aware of the differences. My only exhaust experience was putting an AWE Touring on my '16 S4 and a Borla cat-back on my '95 Defender 90.

Going slightly OT here (Sorry, WillieFlo), but your comments, Ian, about "...the ECU has yet to be cracked...," and Burger's statement about not offering a way to remove the CEL got me to wondering. I was told by APR that the 2nd Gen RS5 has new software and is under current study. And now I guess Burger is saying they won't be offering a CEL removal option.

I'm new to Audi, but not APR nor Burger, both tuners with a decent rep. My question is whether the RS5's current software will (ever) be tuner-friendly, i.e., not in the sense of making it wholesale "developer-friendly" (that ain't going to happen), but eventually as "tuneable" as the RS5's first gen. Wait and see I guess.

    So, here's the current state.

This ecu is encrypted like none before it. It's possible that it could be cracked, but if it's using anything close to the latest encryption technology it could literally take hundreds of years to decrypt it. Nobody knows at this point. The encryption key could be leaked tomorrow and the tuners go nuts.

That makes piggybacks the only option for tuning.

I'm currently running the jb4 beta unit on my s5, it's sick. But burger has said on their forums they don't plan to offer cel cancelling. I don't know why, maybe legal risk (we all saw what happened to be with dieselgate, no mercy)

So we're left with the pretty good option of jb4 user custom tuning which can manage fuel too. Maybe someone will jump towards a standalone ecu solution if the ECU doesn't give up the ghost, but you can count on that being very expensive.

Hardware wise, we'll be stuck either running with cel and ignoring it or were forced to run very high quality high flow cats. The most recent vag emissions systems are uber sensitive to low quality catalysts and spacers don't help at all. Has to be a high quality metallic cat and even then who knows if you avoid the cel at this point.

This is all based on what's around today, which is a very young tuning platform. Maybe it will change in the future.

Thanks for your detailed reply. Great to know. I sensed that this was the case (with the latest Audi SW). As you suggest, we shall see.

Weird to imagine an ECU not being able to be cracked. It will be quite unfortunate if that's the case (it taking years).

APR cracked the RS3 ECU fairly quickly, I dont doubt they will figure out the RS5 ECU.

As for the exhausts I don't see how the S5 and RS5 exhaust would be interchangeable going from 1 turbo to 2. I just picked up my RS5 and really love it, but I am trying to figure out which aftermarket exhaust to go with. AWE said by end of August they will have something out. Manhart looks decent but its only an axelback type set up. Maybe that + aftermarket downpipes is a good way to go.

Is Burger planning on a JB4 for the RS5? I just traded in a 2016 S3 that I ran a JB setup on and really enjoyed it, had zero issues for 20,000 miles.

Personally, I'd rather an Akrapovic exhaust. When I asked recently, they implied that they would likely be released as part of Audi Sport parts. Just don't know when that happens in the US. I think the oval exhaust of the RS5 is so unique that I really want to keep it. Manhart and Akrapovic are the only 2 to have that it seems.

I agree I want to keep the oval look as well.. I am pretty sure AWE will keep that look and Milltek already has a video of their exhaust keeping it as well. AWE will have their exhaust out by the end of September from what I am told.
