I have seen a few threads with mention of AMAX. What is it?

In physics, 'A max' refers to the maximum acceleration of a vehicle. Similarly, 'V max' revers to maximum velocity.

Is the car doing something different in that mode as far as shifting? How would you get the car in that mode?

amax mode overlappes the gears some during a shift so they don't have to momentarily cut throttle to achieve maximum acceleration. it gets in that mode by launching it. I haven't seen an explanation how this works for the ZF8, but there's some detailed ones for the DSG.

I believe the torque converter is at full lock, the shift pressure is increased, and the throttle does not cut. During regular full throttle shifts, I think the spark gets cut during those milliseconds (100-200 I believe I read)it takes to shift which is why you here the shift (farts) which is the unburnt fuel igniting.

To enter the AMAX mode you must be in Dynamic with the transmission in Sport or Manual. You can tap the ESC button once or you can hold to disable it. Hold the Brake firmly with your left foot and floor the accelerator with your right. Release the Brake and your off!

You can feel the car almost lunge forward between shifts. There are no (farts) between shifts. It’s a night and day difference between the AMAX and standard shifts.

You can actually see the 1-2 shift occur.

So there is no way to enter AMAX mode without doing the launch? I can’t just put it in dynamic, turn off ESC and still just drive with the AMAX operating?

Nope. It's not easy on equipment. It's only there for when you need a max acceleration launch. I've done it maybe 15 times.
