So I want red calipers. I'm not sure if I want to paint them or use caliper covers. Has anyone used MGP caliper covers? Opinions welcomed. Thanks

My brother in law bought some MGP covers for his Infinity G37. They were pretty poor quality (fit and finish) IMO. Also, they required some modification to fit.

For $200, you could get a nice paint kit and do it properly.

+1 to painting them. Caliper covers look cheap and can block airflow preventing the brakes from cooling. Painting them looks better IMO. Here's a before and after of the brakes I painted on my Range Rover Sport. I used VHT paint and painted them on the car. Was pretty easy to do.

What parts do you take off the paint while leaving the calipers on? Just that little rubber bleeder thing? Anything else?

I didn't remove anything from the caliper. I just masked off the pads, rotors, and bleeders with painters tape.

Don't ever think of using those covers. They look fake, crappy and stupid. As mentioned, a good cleaning and paint kit is better spent money. IMO.

Thx! I owned the Rover 2 more years after painting the calipers and they still looked like new and were really easy to clean.

As with most things, it was all in the prep. I used sandpaper and a wire brush to clean the calipers, put a base layer of 2000* primer, a few coats of red, the Brembo decals, then a few coats of clearcoat.

With my wheels I can barely get a washcloth between my calipers and the rim, so I know a cover wouldn't work for me. I think spending some time painting them is the way to go.

Curious, how much time did this take? Would like to do this with my S6, might have to do it one caliper at a time or hope for a day where I'm not shuttling kids to/from activities and could knock out all 4.

I think I only had to wait about 15-20 minutes between coats, so I did my front brakes in about half a day. I'm sure if you dedicated a full day you could knock out all 4.

I am currently using MGP caliper covers on the rear. Got a Land Rover set on eBay cheap and they're performing the way I want them to, (ie - covering the smallish rear calipers). I filled in the "MGP" emblem and fake bolt like indentations and painted them to match the front calipers. Even though the style of cover will not retain any heat, I would nor recommend paying full price for a Audi set.

I have been using a ordinary, quality spray paint to paint calipers for many years. Calipers do not get hot enough to damage a quality paint.

Spend some time prepping and paint them. No offense to anyone but the covers look obvious and cheap. You can spot them from 50 yards.
I used G2 on mine after using an angle grinder and sanding discs to knock down the cast surface to smooth. After over 1 year they still look like the day I painted them.

stick to brake cleaner. then lightly sand and spray again to clean residue. then paint.

You can get S6 decals to put on the calipers on ebay.

I just started this, Ive used many spray paints and even the g2 kits, First recommendation is Dupli-Color Engine Paint with Ceramic, it paints really easy even if you spray to thick, second would be the G2 kit but spraying was so much easier. I sanded.

To keep them clean, you can always ceramic coat them with something like Carpro DLUX or Gyeon RIM. Brake dust would just power wash off

Wow those look great, you have inspired me to take a stab at painting. Has anyone done this with an S-Line decal? I have a 2016 A7 Prestige with the R7 5 spokes, the red looks great with these wheels!

That looks professional. My wife has asked about having her done by a powder coating place, but I think that will cost a heck of a lot more than G2..

I assume you have to “bleed” the system to take caliper off and disconnect brake lines?

That’s one job I’ve not yet tackled.

Yes. You have to do a full bleed if you remove them
    From the car.

Make sure you pinch the lines so you don’t lose all the brake fluid in the system. Bleeding the ABS can be a pain.

I used a piece of PVC pipe between the pedal and the seat, pushed the seat all the way forward to hold the pedal for the three days while I prepped/painted/reinstalled. Worked great, and you don't have to pinch the lines. Plus, its way easier to remove the calipers with the hoses attached. You just remove the hoses at the hard-line connection by the fender inner.
