    2009 A6 3.0T SuperCharger Whine

    Hello,

I just raced a stage 2 a7 with cats, downpipe, exhaust, etc...

I beat him off the line all the way to 80mph.

I don't even think I have a tune on my car, at least not from APR and my car sounds dead quiet.

My friend has a check engine light on his car so I don't know if that is because of his intake or not.

I really like the sound of his car, but I don't want to fuck my car up or anything.

What should I do to get that sound?

If I replace the intake would I need to get a tune?

He also gets a misfire in 1 cylinder every once in a while. I am scared to get an intake, because I think if the car is not stock completely than it could get fucked up without a proper tune.

If you have the 3.0TFSI engine and want a little better flow and hear the supercharger, just swap in this 034 Motorsport silicone tube between your stock intake box and throttle body. Check with them first to verify it will fit. It does on S4 and Q5/SQ5 with the s/c 3.0T. The stock tube has a resonator chamber to kill the s/c whine. The 034 does not and is more rigid.

It will not throw a code. While doing that consider installing an AEF or K&N drop in air filter in the stock air box. This will also increase flow (and sound) and will not throw a code either.

These mods do not require a tune.

Your friend's check engine light suggests something else is wrong, and not his intake. With stage 2 he should have walked all over you. My heavy Q5 does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds with just stage 2 single pulley and the 034 tube and filter. EPL tunes are user installed and swappable. I can swap back to stock map and it does not throw a CEL light.

I don't have an A6. I do have the 3.0TFSI engine. I'm not sure the intakes are identical. I suggested the 034 throttle body tube as it removes the resonator that silences the s/c whine.

if your stock air box is the same, then just remove the top and drive it that way for a few days. This will give you a sense of how loud it will be. This will not throw a code. But, you may lose some power as you are permitting engine heated air to enter the intake, rather than outside cooler air through the front grill.

Why do you think an intake change might be unsafe?

Yeah, and I'm probably on the slower end of the 3.0T stage 2 spectrum, because I chose the smallest oversize crank pulley, a 179mm. Stock s/c drive ratio is 2.5:1. I'm at 2.8. Many go up to 3:1 or higher. I stayed conservative as higher ratios need aftermarket cooling upgrades and are hard on the cats.

I have read that modifying the intake system for a vehicle, especially one with boost, without getting a proper tune will damage the engine.

That is also why I don't understand how people can run a APR stage 1 tune with different intakes all on the same tune.

Nick, you can swap out the intake and not do any tune. You will increase the sound of the supercharger whine but not really adding any performance. How do I know this.... I too have an 09 A6 3.0T and one of my first mods was to swap in a Roc*Euro intake from an S4. I had no tune and ran that for a good bit of time before going Stage 1 then ultimately Stage 2. If you want to read up on everything I have done, check out my mod thread.

I am scared of getting a tune because I think my car may already be tuned. I was able to beat a stage 2 downpipe and intake a7 3.0t from 0-80...

It also makes me think the tune isn't worth the extra wear if it makes your car slower all the way to 80.

Also my friends car only has 27k miles on it yet it has a CEL

    - - - Updated - - -

I think I might go with the roc*euro intake, but I am just concerned it may be lower performance than the stock intake or maybe fuck up the current tune

    - - - Updated - - -

Does anyone have a report of someone who modded their car with an intake, and only an intake, and then had no problems with their car?

Thanks for the compliment! As I stated before, I missed my car with an intake and nothing else. Ran that for a while (approx 60,000 Miles) with ZERO issues. You are safe in adding an intake and nothing else. You are not going to hurt anything.

How do you think the performance was before and after the intake? Was it worse?

Probably psychological because the supercharger whine is intoxicating.

There are tons of intake comparison threads for the 3.0T engine in this S4 forum here. Just go there and read.

Your friend has an unknown CEL and getting misfires, neither of which are normal for any 3.0T; chances are something is wrong and causing his car to be slow.

Second, an intake will not cause a CEL (both with stock tune or aftermarket)

Third, tune does not make the car slower to 80 mph. See my first point.

Fourth, open intakes like the Roc Euro have proven to be mildly beneficial over stock. You won't be losing any performance and the whine is awesome.

Okay I think there might be something fucked up with his car then if it is that low miles and is slower until 80mph....

Is there anyway I can have crackles and pops when engine braking on this car, and is it possible to shoot flames?

Oh, Lord, I now think we have a troll, or a 16 year old. Scared of intakes but wants flaming farts out of the exhaust after ignoring all of the sensible advice being given by so many. A riced out Honda Civic might have been a better choice.

A lot of cars have the crackles and pops as well as flames on their tune with modern with cars

Just collecting information - I personally think flames out the back would be cool with a supercharged engine

If I get https://roc-euro.com/products/roc-eu...-intake-system do I also need to order an air filter?
The kit includes the filter. You get the same thing by simply removing the top from your stock air box. If you want cool air, (cold air is denser than hot air and carries more oxygen molecules), a closed air box, CAI, will give you lower intake air temps. That's exactly what you have now. A better tube between the box and the throttle body and a higher flowing filter optimize your intake and also let you hear the supercharger.

If you just want noise (with no improvement in flow over stock with a drop in high flow filter upgrade) to match the exhaust farts you are seeking (if you can find a such a tune), yeah, just get the Roc-Euro. I think most of the serious performance guys moved away from that intake a long time ago after doing some comparison flow and temperature studies. Nothing "wrong" with it from an engine safety stand point, though.

Did you actually go over to the S4 thread and read about the intake options, what works and what does not? I'm guessing the answer is "no."

FWIW, the Roc-Euro intake does come with its own filter.

Finally, before you order that intake, have you checked Roc-Euro's website for fit? They are saying it does not fit your car, if I am reading this correctly.

    https://roc-euro.com/collections/int...-intake-system

Might want to read the disclaimer and then contact them directly for fit. Just a thought . . .

At some point one becomes tired of spoon feeding the lazy.

Several times I suggested you look at the threads on the subject, especially over at the S4 forum here. Lots to read, lots to learn, lots of choices.

No absolute consensus on single "best" but do some reading and learn. I might say it is the one I am running. Many would point you to the AFE (either dry or oiled). Others might say something else.

Maybe someone with an A6 3.0T might come along and verify if the filters for the other 3.0T airboxes (B8, B8.5) will fit your car.

I do not intend to respond further, as it is frustrating to keep helping someone who seems unwilling to do even basic research here.

No worries, thanks for the help, I assumed only people who enjoyed sharing their knowledge would reply

for intakes, performance you are not going to see much of a difference. So the big factor really boils down to looks, and that is where most your cost differences are.

Not worried at all. Sharing is the key word. I shared, shared, and shared. You either did not listen or chose to ignore. I enjoy it when it is appreciated and when the person I share information with is willing to learn. Learning is more than merely milking someone blindly for information. It involves actual study.

I do hope you appreciated being saved from purchasing an intake that the manufacturer says will not fit your car.
