    Possible voltage regulator issue? - 00447 - Function Limitation due to Over-Voltage

    Went to the track this evening and the staging lines were pretty long, so had the car idling with the heat on to keep IAT's low. After 20-25 mins, 3 lights lit up on my dash (ABS, Traction Control and not sure on the 3rd). Essentially, car went into 'limp' mode and kept running but at an increase idle speed and throttle input was sketchy. I pulled to the side and checked codes. After clearing codes, the car ran fine but this occurred a second time later after idling for awhile. It seems it happens when the car is running warm and I am using a lot of accessories.

    My best guess after searching the forum is my voltage regulator on the back of the alternator is on it's last leg. I see a spike of 16.96v below and several '00447 - Function Limitation due to Over-Voltage' errors.

    My 2012 S4 has 63k miles and I replaced the battery about 6 months ago. Battery shows fully charged in MMI.

    As noted in the ECS link you provided: "A good way to check for a faulty voltage regulator is to use a digital multimeter on the battery, with the engine running, to read the charging voltage. If voltage is not constant around 13 to 14 volts, chances are the voltage regulator has gone out."

    Have you take that step to measure the actual voltage the regulator is putting out? I would recommend checking it at idle and with some throttle applied, to see whether the voltage reading is stable at various RPMs. Many digital voltmeters will capture and record "peak" readings (i.e., spikes), that you might not otherwise see on an analog voltmeter.

    You also mentioned having the battery replace recently. Did you install it yourself or have someone else do it? Have you verified the battery connection to be solid/tight and clean? A loose battery connection could be a problem that you don't want to overlook before dropping ~$200 on a new regulator.

    Have you take that step to measure the actual voltage the regulator is putting out? I would recommend checking it at idle and with some throttle applied, to see whether the voltage reading is stable at various RPMs. Many digital voltmeters will capture and record "peak" readings (i.e., spikes), that you might not otherwise see on an analog voltmeter.

    You also mentioned having the battery replace recently. Did you install it yourself or have someone else do it? Have you verified the battery connection to be solid/tight and clean? A loose battery connection could be a problem that you don't want to overlook before dropping ~$200 on a new regulator.
    I confirmed it is the voltage regulator by reproducing the issue (left idling for an extended period of time). Got the warning lights/beeping in the cabin and measured voltage at 18.6 at the battery terminals. New regulator has been ordered. Hoping this is not a PITA to install!

    Hello,

    Just ran into the same issue. Same codes and over voltage recorded at between 16 and 18.6 volts.
    Did replacing the voltage regulator correct the issue? How difficult was the install/replacement?

    I have the same issue. My issue is reproduced by flooring it and coming to a quick stop (floored it today to get around a truck and caught a redlight). Voltage spiked to 15 and went into self preservation mode. Same codes. Weird thing is, this only happens when its really hot outside.

    Yes, replacing the voltage regulator fixed the issue on my car. It was not an easy job, since the alternator must be removed from the underside of the car. Did not own a car lift at the time I did this, but now I do so it would be much easier.

    So...replaced voltage regulator and issues are now corrected. Brushes were very worn down on old regulator compared to the new regulator. I used ECS vid on getting car into service position and asked for advise from forum members. Car on jacks, wheels turned. Thank you all.

    There were two surprises for me.First the socket for accessory pulley tensioner was 17mm, I was tracking 16mm. Anyway this worked for me.
    Second I was humming along taking the four alternator bolts off when I saw a mounting bracket coming down at me straight for my face. It did not hit me but I was surprised. So...the alternator mounts to this bracket which also acts as the mounting base for the supercharger belt tensioner.

    Fun fun. Saved me some funds and I now know how to replace alternator, voltage regulator, belts, tensioner, and put car in service position. :)

    Sorry to revive from the dead but I’m having issues with the charging system.
    Is it normal for the voltage to battery to take 1-2 min to get to 13.7v on startup or does it need to be instant?

    Already replaced voltage regulator and new aftermarket battery.
