I read this word AMAX a lot but I’m not sure what exactly it is on the RS7 platform. Can anyone explain?
    Thanks

AMAX stands for Acceleration Maximum. The gear shifts occur while power is still being applied for optimal performance.

A normal shift de-rates the engine by telling the ECU to pull timing. It does this to prevent free-revving and to lower the torque at the clutch to make shifting easier. It has the engine de-rate while it's opening the first clutch. The engine free-wheels for 50ms or so while the second one is being closed and then the TCU tells the engine to bring back the power.

When in this mode, the TCU keeps the beans on the entire time. There is no de-rate at all. It controls the engine RPM by having both clutches engaged in the linear (slip) region together while it transitions between the two. The upshot of this is that there is no de-rate, the engine is making full power the entire time and is transmitting it to the ground even during the shift. The downside is that it's extremely delicate. If the transition time is too fast, the clutches won't slip enough, will be working against each other and will rip themselves out of the transmission. On the other side, if the transition time is too slow, the engine will free rev, hit the limiter and de-rate via the rev limiter. It comes back as soon as the clutch closes a bit more and pulls it off the redline, but it still spent some time in de-rate.

Thank you both for the details. Is there something that causes this system to fail or make the car slower? If the car does become slower is there a way to fix this glitch? Does this happen to stock cars or only tuned cars?
    Thanks

After you launch the car 200 times the feature is deactivated. Nothing to do with being tuned. My guess is after that many launches it disables it to prevent further wear to clutch packs.

APR is working on a TCU tune that supposedly eliminates the counter while improving shift time, shift characteristics and the rev limiter.

All RS7s have a torque-converter tranny, so no clutches. They have a conventional ZF 8-sp tranny. Only the S6/S7 have the 7-sp dual-clutch (DCT) tranny, I believe also a ZF unit. Maybe the quote above was meant for S6/S7s if true, then.

All the S/RS models have a launch counter. After you reach 200 it no longer works, until you get a trans tune.

All current Audi's that have AMAX do. Pretty much every car that has a ZF transmission...which is every model lol.

Any of you hit 200? Is there an error code? Is the TCU tune just to reset the counter or for performance too?

That is correct - The quote is specific to the DSG but the explanation re: “de-rate” / timing pull during normal shifting vs Amax shifting still applies for the ZF guys.
