Clicking sound when turning at low speeds

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been having some concerns recently with my 2012 A4 Quattro.
Everytime im turning at slow speeds like when im parking in a lot, there will be a clicking sounds either when I turn both left or right.

I couldn't find anything specifically tied to B8s but searching other model forums it sounds something may be wrong with the CV joints or upper control arm.
Anyone out there experience anything similar? Currently there car is sitting at 80,000 miles (2012 B8 Quattro).

Get the car lifted and check all the CV boots for tears and give each joint a good shake to check for slop.

Sounds like CV joints to me. I've replaced quite a few CV joints and axles on VW Passats so I'm sure there's not much difference with the A4. You have several different options with the CV joint. If it's just the boot that's bad you can replace the boot for a minimal cost if you do it yourself. Since you'd have to remove the outer CV joint as part of the process you should do a thorough inspection of the joint after cleaning out all of the grease. If the joint shows signs of wear you should replace the joint. You have several options for doing this. You can buy a new joint or buy a re-manufactured axle. Raxles is an excellent source for re-manufactured axles. You can also try swapping the outer joints from left to right so that the worn part of the joint is opposite to the direction of travel. I would only do this as a short term solution so you could still drive the car while waiting for your new joints or axles to arrive. If you get your axles from Raxles you'll need to return the old ones as a core exchange.

Avoid buying cheap Chinese replacement axles. They are total garbage.

I think I experience the same thing as you. Mine started when I lowered mine on coils however. 2014 with 18k at the time? I’m certain mine has to do with my coils not being adjusted properly but I’m too lazy to check

I have seen a few posts saying that the clicking /clunking sound could be a result of loose subframe bolts.

Does anyone have the torque specs of the front subframe bolts so I can check them?

Well, I got under the car and checked all of the subframe bolts and they were all tight. So there goes that idea.

Anyone else have any other solutions for this?

When do people typically change out the cv joints for the b8?

At any type of failure. Sometimes the boots tear and the grease is flung out. Some don't catch it in time and the clicking starts. There's different type of bearings on opposite ends and when you lose grease there can be permanent damage.

Most that want to save coin buy rebuilds, places like Raxel's and even Autozone. Sometimes it's hit or miss. I recommend OE axles but they aren't cheap.

Same thing with my B8.5. A clicking metal on metal sound. I did some investigation yesterday and wiggled some parts to see if I could get the same sound. found out that the drive axle made the sounds in the joints. I guess that’s my next project!

On my old vw Passat I had to replace the cv boots almost once a year. That’s definitely the source of your problem. Fix sooner than later, I never had any serious problems but have read about quite a few on the vw forum

There’s a TSB on clicking when turning.

Damn.. cars well over 50,000 miles; feels a little ridiculous that Audi expects owners to replace CV joints at that mileage point
How much do ppl expect to pay for this type of labor?

I was just quoted $200 per side (not an Audi dealership)

If the CV is clicking does that mean that changing the entire joint/axle is necessary rather then just replacing the CV boot?

I just replaced the cv boot, never the axle. Les Schwab charged 175 per boot for parts and labor. I think the clicking comes from the fluid leaking out and if it’s not fixed in reasonable time then you may need to replace the joint/axle.
