2014/15 A5 Coupe reliability and maintenance

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi. Im looking to get some input on the overall reliability and cost of maintenance (from a local mechanic, not dealer) of the A5 coupe 2.0 tfsi 8 speed. I will be purchasing the car used with about 35k and some type of warrenty for sure. Will be driving it only on the weekends at around 7500 miles a year. I will be keeping the car for about 7 years which will bring the millage to about 90k. My main concern is reliability ( Engine and electronics). I do not want a headache or money pit. Have Audis come a long way and consider being more reliable nowadays?

From what I've seen and read, Audi has come a long way as far as reliability. And the fact that you're looking at a 2014 or 2015 model year of the A5 is also good because most of the earlier issues were ironed out with those later model years.

19k on my 2014 A5 with a 6 spd manual. Only issue Ive had was the locking mechanism on the gas lid going bad covered under warranty and a dead battery recently. Doesn't burn oil either which the earlier engines had.

56k on my 2014 A5 with 6 spd manual. My locking mechanism on the gas lid also died recently as well as my driver side window regulator failing. I have also had my lock button for the passenger door fail, and my convenience view seat adjustment also fail.

Other than that, the car has been great as far as reliability goes. Just a good many electronic failures and quirks.

You should be fine and shouldn't worry about a "money pit." The engines are vetted and cars are reasonably solid.

Thats already 3 more problems then my 11 year old Lexus ever had haha.

Have you guys been doing oil changes every 10k like the manual states or 5k? Thats a long time between oil changes. I got a quote for spark plugs for $240 which isnt bad. Anyone have an idea how much a timing chain and water pump costs outside the dealer?

Out of personal preference and peace of mind, I do mine every 5k on my own. I use Liqui Moly 5W40 and an OEM filter and it runs me around $50-60.

This is correct for the CPO warranty. I don't believe there is any charge under an original factory warranty though.

Where do you source your liquid moly and filter?

If you're buying a weekend car, why an automatic A5? A S5 would be significantly more fun and hold its value better.

Because then id have to go older. While they are within my budget I try factor in maintenence costs as well. More important then performace to me is reliability. Right now im between and IS350 2011-13 which hard to find a car which doesnt have close to a 100k on it. The A5 is my 2nd option

In Sept I grabbed a 2014 S5 with 12,000 miles. Premium Plus and I’m so glad that I did.
You’ll spend far more money in mods than you would on maintenance. These vehicles are pretty much bulletproof as far as I’m concerned.
I have a supercharged 6 that has an EPL Stage 2 TCU and ECU tune and it feels like I’m driving a rocket ship.
Search harder, find a lower mileage S5 and don’t look back.
In my opinion the age of these vehicles should be judged by the mileage and not the year that it was made.

If you're willing to buy a IS350 as old as 2011 then why not a S5 of similar age?

Just because something is older doesn't mean it's less reliable.

I had a 2008 is350 which I bought new and the A5 may be down on power just by a little, the A5 is a better car overall. Once I tuned it with a stage 1 APR flash the performance are pretty equal now.

I wish I could say the Lexus was more reliable, but it really wasn't. I had squeaky brakes which were switched out for less aggressive and quieter pads. There was a recall where they had to replace my valve springs as the ones that were installed from the factory were defective. I had the cam gear rattle which Lexus had no answer at the time. The water pump started to leak at 28k miles. The dashboard in that car melts if you live in a hot climate.

I've had less issues on my A5 then I ever did with my Lexus.....now I need to find some wood to knock on.

My sister drives an IS350 and it has had it's fair share of issues. Actually, both of my A5 (2011 & 2016) have never once returned to the dealer since I purchased them new (I do my own maintenance), so I guess it's correct to say that they've both been far more reliable than sis's IS350. But hey, that's just one car, which is basically the luck of the draw.

70k miles on my '14 A5, purchased new. Third car I've owned with the 2.0T. On my current car, had a wheel bearing replaced and a couple minor TSBs completed.

My extended warranty is through Fidelity (the used to underwrite the Audi warranties).

Purchased my 2013 S5 in June 2017 with 47K miles and under CPO warranty until 90K or 02/2019. She's currently at 54,8xx miles. The car recently got the 55K service done at a local dealership. I paid for Audi Care which covers 55K and 65K. It was pricy to say the least. But I am uncertain if I will keep the car so figured it'd be nice to provide dealership service records for a future owner. Unfortunately 5 days after getting my car back from service, she over heated and was towed back to the dealership. Turns out the thermostat was bad and had to be replaced as well as a motor mount. Thank goodness both were covered under warranty. Replacing the thermostat alone would've cost around $1000 so I was happy to pay the $85 copay. Service advisor mentioned that I need new front rotors and pads, an alignment (steering wheel is not straight) and battery charge is low. Being that the dealership is asking for $1150 for front brakes service alone, I am sure to be going aftermarket. As for the battery and alignment , I might have to just get it done at the dealership. They quoted $200 for the alignment which is not too bad. I love the car and enjoy driving it every time I get in the driver seat but the little things here and there do add up. I would recommend getting some form of warranty for sure.

You purchased a CPO from Audi and in less then 10,000 miles you need brakes, rotors, and a battery? I would think during their CPO multipoint inspection they would check and have replaced those parts before they sold you the car. Anyway around my way most older S5s are for sale at those fly by night dealers like 'Joes Auto Imports'. I dont buy from those places because they all get cars from auctions. I will play in safe in whatever I get and most likely will purchase from a dealer with warrenty. Thanks for all the input guys.

Flextons00 the car was purchased from my cousin. I did not get it at the dealership. It’s just still under CPO warranty
