Winter Tires 225/45/18 vs 245/40/18 for Audi A5 OEM 18x8.5

    Hi

I was wondering if both would be SAFE for winter driving. Would the 225/45/18 be too "skinny" for the rim?
What are the pros and cons of each size? I would assume the narrower tire would give you more traction and ability to go "through" snow?

    Thanks for any input!

You can go to a place like Tire Rack and choose a winter tire and go to specs and it will show you rim size. That tire will fit from 7-8.5" rim. See the link.

Are you thinking about swapping tires on the same rim or getting other rims? I'd recommend finding used rims if you can and have the winters on the extra rims.

I just got new 18 inch rims and the salesman talked me into a higher size 245 45R 18. I can tell the ride is a little more softer than the 245 R40 18. I don't have that sporty feel. I was told that the Audi suspension will adapt to the bigger size automatically. Is this true? Will this size damage my quattro?

245/45/18 is one of the standard sizes for the A6. I have an A7 with 265/35/20 summers that are larger than the 245's by 3/4 of an inch or so and am using the 245's for the winter.

From what I've been told as long as all 4 are the same size that's all that matters as the diameter size is just slower or faster rotation at an RPM.
