    Auto Stop/Start while moving

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2017 A7 and when my auto stop/start is turned on many times it will turn off the engine while going 2mph and under. I have tested this many times and it is definitely 2mph and not 3mph. If I am very delicate when braking and basically coast to a stop I can come to a complete stop before pressing in the pedal harder to shut off the engine. If I am braking normally (for me anyway) it will shut off at 2mph causing the vehicle to stop harder than normal. This happens when slowing for speed bumps and making turns at intersections where you don't come to a complete stop. Basically the engine will turn off just to immediately turn back on again causing a delay in acceleration at an intersection. A safety issue IMO. I found myself either turning it off with the button or quickly putting it in sport mode when I thought it would happen at intersections.

After all that I came to ask if anyone knows how to adjust this speed threshold to 0mph instead of 2mph. It is my understanding that older models are set to 0mph. I went to the dealer and he informed me that they were unable to change it as it is a factory setting. He said it was this way to help with emissions. He also told me they were unable to make other changes that I was easily able to make using the vag-com. I have at least made the change where the car will remember my last auto shut off setting. I have searched the forums with no resolve. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Find a fellow Audizine member with a vag-com Hex-net cable and code it out. When you do this procedure, you will gain control over that function. You will only engage stop/start when you press the button to activate system. Makes driving so much better, especially in stop and go traffic.

I would get the car coded so that you can keep the auto start stop permanently off. That's what I have done in my friend's car, and I can't stand the feature.

There should just be a button to turn it off... did that get removed with facelift c7s? It’s an A with a circle around it

Yes, the button does turn it off, but the function returns every time you turn car off. If, and when you code it out, you reverse the operating parameters. Push button only to engage stop/start. Or never push again and enjoy car.

On S6, start/stop setting is remembered, but not on A6/7s. Having said that, I'd just code it to remember setting, since it'd stay always off if desired. What you can also do (which I did) is to reverse the LED on the switch, meaning when it's off the system is off (rather than on), so no annoying LED on all the time. And if for some reason you want or need to turn it on, just hit the switch and it'd be on. I prefer that from permanently disabling it, since there's no down side to having it active but with LED off, AND remembering last setting. Your choice. You can code both options with VCDS (and probably OBD11 too).

    Just so everyone is clear:
I am aware of the button that turns the auto stop off. I am also aware of how to change the computer to remember my last setting or just turn it off completely. I currently have change it with my VCDS software to remember my last setting like it is on the S6/S7. I just want to change the mph parameters to 0mph instead of 2mph. I think that if it didn't shut off while I was still moving I would actually use it. I have looked through the software but can't seem to find anything and I am too scared to change anything without already knowing the outcome.
    Thanks for your replies.

That doesn't sound like a parameter. That's a warranty issue. Your car should never turn its engine off while in motion on account of the systems it supports

Spoke with the dealer tech and he informed me all the 2017s are this way and they can’t change it.

Sounds like the making of a class action lawsuit. I would not want to be in the process of making a left turn and the car suddenly shuts off. Audi has to address this programming/glitch.

It’s in the 2017/18 manufacturers specifications that start/stop will kick in as you roll to a stop. It’s not a glitch, it’s by design.

Why would you sue them because you didn’t read the manual?

The Audi start stop feature is pretty much instantaneous in restarting when required, besides which you will soon adjust your driving style to compensate.

This is a case of "It is what it is..." Just program it so it works the way you want. I feel the same about this feature. It sucks. I own a '17 so I know what you are talking about, but complaining won't change it. I changed it so the button remembers last position where it is OFF. Im very pleased with that. I know there are lots of folks that like this feature. To each their own.

I know you were not really directing your comment at me. I have no desire to sue over something that was intentionally designed this way. I did read the manual and speak with an "expert." You are correct, it does come back on almost instantly. I have adjusted my driving style but sometimes it is just inevitable that it will go off while driving. It makes for a rough stop or stop/start sometimes. There are so many things you can adjust using VCDS I was just hoping this would be one of them. I don't want it to shut off while coasting, I want it to shut off after I am stopped.

If you are talking about me. I am not complaining. I know a lot gets lost in text. I am happy just turning it off. I think I would enjoy the feature if it was the way I want it which is why I am looking for a way to adjust it. If I never figure out a solution to this I will not loose any sleep over it. I still love the car. Having it turned off is that same as every other car I have ever owned, EVER.

I was just speaking in general and not towards anyone. I was first exposed to this start/stop stuff when my friend purchased a 13 Mercedes C300. His does turn off at a stop. He hated it then and still hates it. I sure didn't like it either. Feels like something is wrong with it. When I got my A6, I learned its something I was not fond of. In my opinion, "almost instant" start is not good enough. There is a lag. On one occasion my car did not start after a stop. Had to shift to Park and restart. That was a "wtf" moment for me. Got off my butt and did something about it. There is a notation in the manual that under "specific conditions are not met" it may not start and you have to restart the engine. I don't know what "specific" means, but I obviously met that condition when I had to manually restart the engine. I only owned this car for a week when this happened.
I don't keep my cars for long, but for long term owners, Im wondering how many owners have to replace starters. I know they are made for heavy duty use, but a standard starter would not last long having to start a car MANY times per drive.
