    balance shaft alignment

So does anyone have any data regarding what position the balance shafts are supposed to be in with the #1 cylinder at TDC? The marks on the gears were completely out no matter which way i rotated the assembly, i suspect that the last time the rebuilt the engine they were a little off with putting these into the correct position, the one gear was upside down. I have a chart but the gears do not have the same marks the chart seems to indicate they should have.

It looks about the same with the one I used. I used a manual from manuals.com/audi/
When I took the engine apart, no matter how many revolutions I turned it, I never made the balance shaft align. After I timed it myself, they were coming back into alignment every time. It takes ALOT of revolutions for everything to line up again.

cant seem to find those tiny dots however on that double sided sprocket, i see the large one for the chains colored link, but not the ones that pair to the actual balance shaft itself, i also have another problem because like a dumbass i accidently dissasembled the cam actuator too, and the pin fell out and im not sure if the pin slides through the spring, or the plunger pushes against the spring. lol

This isn't timed right, but it does show the marks you're looking for.

yeh that one i can see, they seem to indicate smaller ones on the teeth side of the second part of the gear that meshes with the balance shaft it self that should keep the balance shaft in alignment, if they are on there, i cant see them, only thing i see now in the picture is on the bottom left by my thumb on one of the edges of the teeth on the curved gear set, looks like a dot.

This is the correct installation and timing position of the balance shafts.

You can see the single dot just above the white paint. The actual valve timing is separate from the balance shaft timing. Once the shafts are timed, just time your timing chain to the 3 marks on the chain, to the 2 marks on the cam, and the 1 on the crank. As long as those 3 marks line up, they will always be timed. No need to put it to exact tdc. The 3 marks on the timing chain make valve timing idiot proof.

If the gears are not synced, how does the engine not rattle to pieces?

I don't know that balance shafts necessarily cause a "rattle", they deal with small harmonic vibrations. To my understanding it would be detrimental to the bearings more then it would be to the seat of my pants. You could have balance shafts out of time and the engine mounts soak up most of the small vibrations from that imbalance. Car idles alot smoother now for whatever reason. Possible they were timed right but the dots just dont line up, even though I would have expected them to.
