Replace 1 Coil Pack or All of Them

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello.

Just got a multiple misfire code on my 08 S4 Cabrio. Looks to be the coil pack on cylinder #5. I will swap it with the #6 and see if I get the misfire there just to verify.

I will replace it regardless but is it a good idea to just replace all of them? It looks like one has been replaced but the others are probably original. My car has 65,000 miles on it. Is there an interval for replacing the coils?

I just replaced my spark plugs this weekend. The plugs in the car were not the proper 4-electrode plugs (single electrodes were installed) and I am thinking this maybe revealed a week coil.

Also, is there a better aftermarket replacement coil pack that is more reliable than the Audi coils or is it best to just go back with OEM?

    Thanks.

If that one coil failed, it's likely the rest aren't too far behind. You can replace just the bad one and probably be good for a little while, but why not just save yourself the headache in the future and replace them all at once?

Yeah, that is what I am thinking. Pretty sure 7 of the coils are original which means they would be 10 years old, and the 8th was changed who knows when.

Should I just go back with genuine Audi/VW coils? Or is there a better alternative?

Oem or oe supplier will be fine. You can clean up the old ones and put some grease on it and see if it helps. My opinion is that sometimes the old stuff cleaned up is better than new oem stuff right now because all that crap is shitty quality. When i did mine i just took them out, cleaned with electronic cleaner and greased and they have been fine since then.

Buy all the coils off FCPeuro.com and have that be the last set you buy because of there no questions asked life time replacement guarantee. Might as well get all new spark plugs too and make that the last spark plugs you'll have to buy again.

Because they are cheaper and from what I have read are better than the S4 coils. And yes, FCP Euro has the best return policy on the planet.

That is not entirely true. FCP will warranty whatever you return if it's more than a year old or so, but you'll have to pay again. Now what happens with all that, is that you get a store credit for whatever you pay, so the next time you have to replace it you have a store credit to fall back on or get some other stuff.

That is not entirely true. FCP offers 90 day full money back guarantee on unused parts in original packaging after that it switches to there lifetime guarantee. You rebuy the part you are exchanging and return your old/used/broken part and once received by FCP they will refund you the initial amount payed in full on to your card. The store credit and a year older details you talk about might have been what they did in the past.

Any modifications to use the R8 ones or are they plug and play?

Thank you for the advice. I cleaned the contacts and rubber boots on each of the coil packs and I have not had a single misfire since. I will change out the oddball coil pack since it looks a good bit older than the other 7. The 7 on closer inspection do look to be the updated coil packs so I will leave them for now.

    Thanks again.

Apparently the r8 coils secondary circuit have a higher winding count.
