    3.0T Oil Consumption

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay, so I have confirmed that I don't have a leak - but rather my car seems to burn a lot of oil.

Like a quart in a week....

I do drive REALLY hard, like I red line it at every stop light.

Is this normal, or do you think I may have some faulty or soon to be faulty components?

I mean I really don't mind just adding in a quart every week it's not a big deal to me, but I am curious as to whether or not this can be improved.

    Car: 2009 A6 3.0T

I am also thinking of going Stage 2 soon, so I would like to get everything perfect before then

I just got my VCG changed yesterday though, so maybe that will address this problem but who knows

That would be my hunch, too. Hopefully that will work! Mine only burns one quarter every month or two, but I only drive maybe 2,000 miles a month on average. My 3.0T's (4-door C6 Quattro sedan) amount of oil consumption is par for course, according to the car's manual. You might want to check out your car's manual for what is considered normal.

U need a new pcv if your car isn't burning oil. Or worst case some new rings.

Well if it's not leaking the only way it would be consumed otherwise would be via burn right? Sorry I literally just got this car a few weeks ago and I am learning everything about it

Oil can either leak or burn. PCV would be the most common issue, followed by either piston rings or valve stem guides. That's not unique to this engine, but really any modern engine. Leaks...that's a much longer list and more engine specific.

Anyway to diagnose which of these may be the culprit?

you can do a compression and leak down test? or just replace the pcv first and go from there.

So here's my 0.02$... Oil consumption with this motor is pretty well known. In my experience, the more you get on the gas, the more oil it burns. The hotter it is outside (and hotter the engine), the more oil it burns.

I have looked around a bit, but not extensively and not seen any definitive evidence of a fix for the problem. The most likely culprit I have seen is the PCV system that sits underneath the supercharger but I haven't come across enough posts of "I replaced the PCV system and the oil consumption issue is gone" posts to make me believe that is definitely the problem. I really don't believe it's the rings but that's just my hunch of owning quite a few older audis. That's just not something they typically have problems with. The PCV system absolutely is something Audi has had problems with in the past. Considering it's sandwiched in the "V" under the supercharger, there's no doubt in my mind that there could be potential compromises made to make it fit under there. I'm pretty sure there are several revisions of the part as well.

When it bugs me enough, the PCV is the first thing I am going to try. It is a pretty big job as the supercharger must come off and I will probably clean the valves with the walnut shell treatment when I do it.

When looking at the oil max and min screen, what is the difference, in quarts, of oil between the two?

My oil consumption is steadily getting worse. All the reading that I have done indicates that it is the PCV's rubber flap that gets old and starts letting oil by under hard vacuum. Every bit of evidence points this direction. When I drive stop and go traffic, I can burn through a Qt in 200-300 miles. If I am on the highway or driving hard (boost), It will last twice as long. Exhaust tips get black very quick, but it's hard to notice oil burning from the pipes, so it's low enough that it doesn't look like blown rings.

Anyhow... I've spent a good deal of time looking for the part and found this as the latest version: 06E103547AC ECStuning indicates that this one does not fit our cars, but they've got it wrong on this part. Doing some more searching, I found a part that seems to be JUST the orange rubber valve. This is the actual part that gets worn out so I am going to replace it first. $26 ($18 + $8 shipping) is a hell of a lot better than $100-150. I'm thinking that the rest is hard plastic and will hold up if not cracked. And from being in there the last time for the waterpump, I'm fairly certain this will work.

With the funds that I save from not buying the full unit, I'll go ahead and replace the intake gaskets that I passed up on last time as well as buy medium for blasting the ports.

What do you guys think? Will that part do the trick?

Considering it's plastic and it's underneath the supercharger...my money is that it's brittle at this point.

From what i remember, it's a really thick plastic and there aren't any thin bungs like the stupid front coolant pipe. *fingers crossed*

I pulled the trigger, the seller has 100% (24) positive feedbacks and the comments seem to indicate that it will do it. Hopefully this works and future readers can save the $100.

This might take me a month to complete as I have some full weekends coming up, but I have to get it down before mid April, so I will report back before then. I should have the ports blasted by then too!

Yes the PCV fix is still a thing on 2014s. I might be wrong but the 2016+ 3.0Ts have the updated PCV from factory.

Check the back of the engine from underneath. I had a bad leak from the chain cover seals.
I never had any oil on my driveway so the tray must catch it or it leaked while on the move.
I would also give it a strong engine flush when changing oil.
I've gone from 400 miles per litre of oil to 700 with the flush and after the chain seal fix, I'm over a 1000 and still counting.
Ive still got my cam cover seals to replace and the vacuum pump to re seal.
I had the PCV swapped nearly 2 years back and it made little to no difference. But the mechanic did say there was oil and water sat on the V of the block.

Alright; I found this bulletin which mentioned 3.0T TFSI Model Year 2009 – 2012 but heck I'll change the PCV component . I'll also do the engine flush and check the back of the engine from underneath.

I did an about ~ 1700km drive before I got the check oil warning, but I did some spirited driving. I added ony half a litre (half a quart) then I did about 2000 km, where I drove more like a normal person and the light didn't come off yet, but I checked the dipstik and it's almost at low again. I called Audi, they said they want to do the oil check test but I'll just do these checks you guys are mentioning. The engine has now 80 000 km only, which is about 50 000 miles.

    Thanks!

I think from what I've seen with my own car, that TSB is accurate. I find that stop and go and extended idling i.e. traffic jams makes the biggest difference in increasing oil consumption. If I do a long road trip with highway driving, it barely burns any oil.

Haven't noticed much difference with the amount of oil my car consumes after the PCV and software update, but my consumption has never been as severe as some.
