2004 S4 Avant blown engine - looking for replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm new to Audis, so hoping you guys can help this novice out with advice and any 4.2s that might be for sale. My son's 2004 Avant had a failure in cylinder #2 which scored the wall of the cylinder - too expensive to replace the block. We've looking for a replacement engine and found a place online called used.remans - anyone ever used them? They claim a 5yr, 50k parts and labor warranty!

Below is the website and quote I received:

    http://used.remanns.com/

    Vehicle/Part: 2004 Audi S4 / Used Engine - (4.2L, VIN L, 5th digit) thru VIN 200000
Price: $3995.00 (Used Engine) 5 Year or 50k Mile Parts & Labor Warranty included
Shipping: Free Shipping in all U.S. states except HI & AK
(*There is a $75 charge for all residential deliveries)
    Mileage: ~78K miles

Thanks for the feedback! If anyone has a 4.2L that'll fit a B6 manual Avant - we're looking for one!

I can tell you that your best bet is either a 2.7T swap, or rebuilding the (any in this case) V8. That motor is going to need chain guides within or just after those 50k and for the price they want I honestly think you could refresh and rebuild yourself a V8. Allegedly you could swap in the 2.7 for about that much or less. Regardless of what you decide to do, I have a long block that I think is in fairly decent shape. I'd be willing to sell it to you for cheap, or just the block if you end up wanting only that if your heads are good. lmk!

I bought a 60,000 engine from used.Remanns.com This is just one of their domain names. Look up SWengines...i wish a would have before paying 4,500 for the s4 engine. It took a month to get delivered, a couple of weeks later when i could finally start the swapping of the engines, i started to remove the cut up wiring harness that it came on it, well i found that they cut driver side electric cam adjuster wire. (this is a 1000.00 part). I contacted them, which took several calls to finally get someone on the phone, from there it became the worst experience i've ever had with anything in my life. They offered me 100.00 and thats it. They wouldn't listen to me about the cost of the part at all. So i put it on the back burner after fighting with them and getting no where. i few months later i had the funds to fix it myself. I then found that the flip was frozen sold, it wouldn't move at all even after i sprayed it PB blaster a few times so I ended up pulling the intake, found tons of debris in the intake and pieces of plastic on the valves (zip-ties, cap to a gasket maker tube, very odd things like that. So i dug deeper and found 4 broken timing guides and had to clean all of the cylinders out due to debris in them( JH Motorsports found this) They would do anything for me. So im now into the motor for 6,300.00. So if i was you i wouldn't buy a engine from them, they dont honor their warranties and are the rudest company i've ever dealt with by a lonnnnng shot.

I'm not sure your DIY level but I would suggest either checking Self Service (Pick A Part) yards in your area or checking sites like eBay. Ebay has complete engines or blocks depending on what your preference is. The following link is a complete engine with 89K miles. And like jr82s4 suggested, I would personally do the timing chain service on any engine you end up with.

Thank you all for your feedback. Never fails, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. We're heading down the replacement trail, likely installing a V8 replacement. I don't have a lot of experience on Audi and even less time (hate saying that out loud) to do a swap myself, so looking to get a local shop in Wilmington, DE to do the work. Great shop, excellent techs. Unfortunately, the 2.7 swap estimate is ~ $9k with all new seals, gaskets and a single turbo conversion. Replacement V8 installed with 12m / 12k warranty ~5k out the door. Leaning towards installing a V8 replacement.

Sincerely thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, I'm told that Cyl #2 is scored, so sleeving / rebuilding is cost prohibitive, as all cylinders should be sleeved, not just one (remember, I'm a novice w/ Audi engines, relying on reliable advice from the shop where my son's car is in Wilmington - not a dealer's shop).

Your welcome, i would hate to see someone go through what i did with that company. I do have the 4.2 with new guides in it still. Sold the car so i could fix the engine and haven't found a good donor car for it yet.
