Muffler placement on exhaust system , does it make a difference?

Curious to hear if muffler placement on a turbo back exhaust makes a difference in tone or and sound .
So say the on the ssac twin 2 , you remove the mid muffler and leave the rear

Is there a reason why on the twin 1, they stick the only muffler in the middle and not at the rear ?

Great question- looking forward to replies. I am running a Milltek with no cats and have considered relocating some of the exhaust components to alter the sound.

AWE Twin 1 and the 'OG' UUC VM3 exhausts are the best sounding, both have mufflers located mid section if that tells you anything.

I’m not sold on this whole muffler thing. I prefer cats only.

The usual consensus is that a mid muffler is better at minimizing in-car drone.

Ditto on mid-muffler, my understanding is that muffler placement near the middle of the exhaust in between the motor and the exhaust tips reduces the distance resonance can travel uninterrupted (technically pulse waves) which is what drone is.

My twin 1 is loud outside the car but has zero drone at any speed inside, the muffler is ahead of the rear axles.

I prefer to place my muffler at the rear due to simple thermodynamics. The further back the muffler the more time the exhaust gases have to cool. The cooler the gas, the smaller area it takes up and the easier it passes through the muffler. Less back pressure, more power.

I’ve heard some twin 1 exhausts both from awe and ssac sometimes good and sometimes sound like shit at has a certain type of resonance up high rpm and when shifting ..

But almost all cars I’ve heard with either the muffler in the rear or both middle and rear sound great
Like the fast intentions , or the apr . And the 034 Motorsport
