Exhaust Rattle Fix - Replacement Exhaust Part From Audi

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi folks,

Here's a quick update for those of you with rattling exhausts.

In my RS3 sedan I notice the exhaust rattle most on cold starts and if the exhaust valves are closed (ie. comfort mode), although if I actively listen for it it's there to a minor degree most of the time regardless of the car's temperature/settings. I approached Audi about the issue a couple of months ago and they asked me to bring it in to be checked out. Having inspected the car they acknowledged the rattle and advised me it's a common issue for the model, and that Audi HQ in Germany was working on a replacement part to fix the shaking valves. I was recently advised that the fix has now been developed, and that the part would be shipped to the dealership so it could be installed under warranty.

Today I was told the piece has arrived (it had to ship from Germany to Australia). Apparently its a pretty big piece of hardware that runs about half the length of the chassis, as the whole piece that houses the valves needs to be replaced (I know very little about car anatomy so sorry for the non specific description).

The part is due to be installed next week, and I'll keep you all posted on the effect the new part has on the exhaust sound. I've been assured it won't ruin that sweet I5 snarl!

thanks for the update on this issue. glad Audi has been working on a fix for it. Let us know how it goes and if you wouldn’t mind posting the part # here once it is replaced that would be helpful for people with the issue.

OP - any chance you could take a quick clip of the rattle prior to having the part installed? Thanks!

Yup. Literally sounds like a handful of spoons in the right pipe (only on first cold start of the day) until the rpms come down and it’s pretty quiet.

I took mine in to have them take a look at the rattle on startup issue , they found nothing “wrong “but could duplicate the same rattle on an RS3 in the showroom., they sent me away saying sorry, nothing they could do.

Did you happen to get that TSB#?

Hey guys. I believe I just had this fix done today. The part was a weird special order and they told me the same thing...it was about the length of the car. I have the euro (but oem) bypass pipes and at first they noted they were non-stock but my SA found the Audi part #s. Anyhow, this is the part number of what they replaced...and the retail price was almost $1800:

8V5-253-181CP "Silencer" -- I think this is the entire mid-rear section of the exhaust including the valves. I noticed that Cars245.com doesn't even have the "CP" revision in their system yet, only the CF version of this part number.

Ok folks I've picked mine up. I can confirm the part is indeed called "silencer", with the part number as listed by Stephen. The tinny rattle is essentially completely gone and as a result there is a noticeable improvement in the overall sound, particularly when the valves are closed. The timbre of the sound is thankfully unchanged and volume wise I'm pretty sure it's actually even slightly louder although I could be wrong. There is a very slight squeaking sound from the back of the exhaust although I suspect it's simply due to being brand new (I've only driven it the few kilometers home from the dealership and that's it).

Also in case it helps, prior to the part exchange mine sounded similar to the video that has been posted above, although it was not quite so "ratchet" sounding. The sound of mine was close enough to the sound in the video that I suspect it's caused by the same issue.

Not to derail the exhaust rattle, but as for sunroof rattle, i had to get a whole new chassis. It had to be built in Germany first, then shipped over and installed. I am going on 3 weeks now.

TPI2048256/3 Is the Audi response TPI on this floating around now , I’ll see what my Canadian dealers who apparently have no clue about this come up with.

It's almost like Audi doesn't test the car before they start selling it.

    Stephen,

What happened with the OEM pipes?

I have them installed, and want to the get the rattle fixed - Does the new TSB Part replace the midpipe section? Did your dealer re-install your bypass pipes for you?

    Thanks,
    -Zac

You might want to put the catted pipes back on first.
