    Anyone a prior F10 m5 owner? Looking at RS7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My F10 m5 was totaled recently and I was looking to replace it with another M5 but the RS7 is catching my interest.

I am a heavy mileage driver I put around 25k-30k miles a year.

How are these cars with high mileage? Any significant common issues?

    thanks for any helpful info/suggestions

The current C7.5 RS7 is almost out of production as the new C8 models will be arriving soon.

Either wait for the new RS7 (a few years possibly) or get the new M5 imho as it has a nice awd setup.

I got a friend of mine, who had owned BMWs for the past 15 years, out of his M6 GC and into an RS7. He couldn't be happier.

I came out of a modded 3 series and was weighing options between a CLS63, M5/M6 and Rs7. I personally LOVE the hatch sedans and think Audi did it best. In my area, M5's are a dime a dozen and even though I'm driving "just an Audi", and most people think my car is no different from an A7, I see far less of them and this was a draw for me. I also happen to like the interior better as well. Aesthetics are entirely in the eye of the beholder though.

I have been very happy with reliability and my first car was run to almost 40k miles on APR stage II before it was totaled. Much of that was seen running 100+ octane as well.

    ... here.

Sorry to hear about the M5--I share that experience with you; pic below :

    IMG_2509.JPG

I've put 25K miles on my 2017 (new) RS7 in 11 months and have done little but change the oil (other than mod it that is); I had a coolant leak, too, but that was covered under warranty.

Reliability covered to the extent I can--and I shall say this with the emphasis it deserves--THIS CAR IS F#@KING RIDICULOUS WHEN IT COMES TO USABLE POWER/ACCELERATION. It's as practical as my M5s--perhaps more so--but its ability to put power down is so much more usable everyday, everywhere and regardless of the conditions. Stock, it's OK... a bit meh... but so were my M5s CPs and M6 CPs... but tuned, it's quite literally laughable how fast this thing is. My best 60mph in my last 2016 M6 GC CP was 3.5 sec on my best day, best road, best conditions, etc... in my RS7 I've managed under 2.6 and can hit 2.7/2.8 on a regular basis.

The DCT transmission in BMW M-cars is sublime; the transmission in the RS7... well, isn't. I drive in manual (on the paddles I mean) 80% or more of the time and the RS7 is passable but I miss my DCT. Overall, though, the car is faster, more practical, more enjoyable and a $hit load more expensive to get into from a leasing perspective and worth every penny. I LOVE IT (transmission woes aside)!

The sound is very different, too--more raucous--but it's louder and ultimately more satisfying. I do have an Akrapovic exhaust--and I had one on my M6, too--but I think the statement holds, regardless.

Looks-wise: this is perhaps too subjective but I think my M6 GC gives the RS7 a run for its money but, in my opinion, the RS7 wins out nonetheless... from most angles at least, not all, though.

Short story: get one; you won't be disappointed.

I hand a frozen bronze M6 Grand Coup that was Tuned and my stock RS7 smokes it. M6 has major traction issues. Best decision was going to RS7 now stage 2

    Nod. I mostly agree.

If your stock RS7 smoked your tuned M6 then your tune or M6 (or measuring equipment) was broken ... unless you're referring only to their respective ability to launch in which case I wholeheartedly agree. From a roll, though, my tuned M6 would give my tuned RS7 a run for its money (seat of the pants measurement only).

The AWD is a huge factor to me. Its precisely what steered me away from the CTSV and M cars. I don't see myself in a high horsepower sedan without AWD ever again. Having 700-800hp is cool and fun, but its completely worthless in almost all driving situations with only RWD. Tire set up is so much more important, as well as expensive. Most importantly, driving in bad weather is just so much easier with AWD.

Looking to the future, at the possibility of wanting a sports car, I'm still going to be looking at F-type, 911's, GT-R's, R8 if I can ever afford them because of that AWD factor.

The M6 was fast at the track but it couldn’t constantly lay down the power like the RS7. I do tuning for Euro cars and did my M6 and RS7 (most of my business is Mini Coopers)

Not going to lie I do miss being about to roast 1st through 5th gear with my m6 though. Love how Merc and BMW are adding not alone AWD but also to have the ability adjust front and rear traction as well as removed it so you can drift/do silly burn-outs etc.. yes I'm still a kid at heart lol.

It is cool but I wonder how useful it will really be, if is sacrifices reliability and make the system really complicated, and if people really use the feature rather than it being a Motortrend track day only feature.

    I feel exactly the same.

It's the reason that steered me in the direction of the Subaru WRX around 20 years ago, and then 4-5 years later into Audis for a more luxurious version of the AWD performance car.

I've done relatively high power FWD and RWD cars and don't have much desire to go back.

I've always tried to look positively when new tech comes out like this instead of being pessimistic especially having the ability to have rear wheel drive when wanted. Hear you though time will tell.

Last 2 cars i owned both M5, M6 and both 700-800whp. They are better drivers cars, hands down. The RS7 is simply a better car all around* with usable power 10 month out of year vs 3 months lol

WHP... can you please outline the tune? I've seen nothing close to this for S63 or their TU variants. Even on race fuel, that would've required new clutch packs and something superior to the best tunes I've seen/purchased.

I couldn't agree more with everything else you said (M-car transmissions a given at this point).

Lol I have world record for M6 1/4 find me on drag times. Sakhir orange M6 (10.3 at 134mph)
I don’t know what you talking about 680-720whp is normal for DP, Intake and race gas M5/6 lol
I had 780whp and 840wtrq stock turbos with DME Tune and JB4 stack. lol
    Stock motor and internals lol
SSP clutch and axles upgraded of course

I’m hoping for a 10.2- 10.4 on stage 2 with race gas in my RS7.

So your stock clutch did slip--you replaced it--you used race fuel and custom DPs. You stacked two tunes: DME and JB4? Bold. So great, you addressed my questions so why the lol BS?

Anyhoo, I tried the JB4 on my own M6 GC which caused my clutch to slip. I was forced to downgrade to the dumber JB piggyback. I kept the JB4 and put in on an X5M I got for the wife--worked nicely on that ZF 8-speed... for the whole month that we had it.

I drove a DME M5 just once in England; a friend of mine Paul owned it--it was fast but that's the extent of my experience with DME. Tried Dinan... didn't like that at all. Burger still seems the best US option but I'm about a year or so stale on that front.
