    Reverse light wire

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’m having trouble finding what wire is for reverse. It seems to me that it’s controlled on the circuit board attached to the taillight housing because I put my multimeter probes on all the different wires on the plugs and they all read the same voltages regardless of where the gear selector is.

I’m just wondering if anyone can give me a clue as to where the wire is that applies the 12V when revers is selected?

If you can't get it via the taillight harness, have you attempted to look for it at the shift selector's harness? IIRC, P, R, N, and D are the only physical connections. Where as, +, -, and S are electronic connections. But I would take a peek in there to see if you can tap signal from there. As the car does know when it's in R (signal going out to the gauge cluster). Worth a shot! Good luck.

PS, what are you working on that you're asking for such a specific wire?? lol (curious)

Thanks I’m trying to keep it all in the trunk area.

I’m working on putting in a backup camera that uses a wireless transmitter.

What you can do is, get to the reverse light cluster by taking off the cover trim.
You’ll see the bulb holder and the connector plugged in.
Unplug the connector and remove the holder. You will see the reverse bulb fitted.
By following the “wiring” from the bulb to connector pins on the holder, you’ll be able to determine which pins are for the reverse bulb. You can test them to be sure, by connecting 12volt to them. If the bulb goes on, there’s your connector pins to it.
Now, it’s just the matter of comparing the connector wires and bulb holder pins to find out which wires match.

I have recently installed load resistors parallel with the reverse bulb to stop DIS led bulb error so will have a look for you later on today.

Currently still working on these bulbs and wiring, as leds are flashing with every 30seconds when computer does it’s bulb check.
Got tested solution, only waiting for parts to arrive.

    Here it is bud:

These are the two reverse bulb wires I tapped into: Black with Green stripe and Brown.

    Hope this helps

The problem I was having was that wether in reverse or park there was 12V+ going to all the pins regardless.

I see you tapped into the green/black wire and the brown wire for your backup camera which one did you use for power and which for ground?

Strange that you had 12v all the time in there.
Now you know which wires they are so follow them to the connector and measure with multimeter.

I tapped into those to add load resistor in parallel to the bulb. This was to get rid of the DIS error.
Got myself brilliant white and bright leds for the reverse and had to add them resistors.
Will do the relay mod in few days and close the case of strobe I got now.

I realize this thread is long dead, but I need to tap in to the reverse light too - I have a facelift(2009) sedan, was yours the same or pre-LED?
This video says 2012 but is clearly a 2009-2011(looking at the light), and they claim green/yellow.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osXyGcCSknQ

    Mine is 2010 Avant.
Better trace pins in connectors and to wires, from bulb holder. That's what I did

Yeah I didn't really understand how to trace them - there are these conducting "plates", broken up by black dots(insulators?). One side of the bulb holder goes down to the blinker bulb(so probably ground) the other goes down to the connector where theres 6-8 black dots in a cluster. Kinda like this:

So would that mean it's either pin 1 or 2?

Not really with you on that drawing.

Ground should be common for all bulbs. You need to find the connection from the bulb to pin and make sure pin is transferred to the correct colour coded wire, on the other side of connector.
Tap in there and "bob's your uncle"

Yeah I understand the concept, but I don't think I understand the "tracks"(I don't know what to call it in english, the metal tracks/plates that leads the power around inside the housing).

Mine looks pretty simple since it's only 2 bulbs, it's like this (just that the white dots are black):

Found a pic of my exact one:

Is this the right way of tracing it? The track on the right side seems to go directly between 2 pins, if the black parts are the backside of the pins?

    Additional pics, higher res:

Yeah, it does look like your markings in green are correct to pins in plug.
To be absolute sure, just plug in 12v to these pins for bulb to come on. If on, they are your pins you need to tap onto wires from

Thank you so much for all the advise Kris, got it working..!
..took waay more time than anticipated though, mainly the cable routing in the lid and from it to the boot.
