My Apikol 1.8t intake manifold review

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello everyone I thought I would share my experience on purchasing this manifold.

A little background. My a4 is on a big turbo and currently maxed out on fueling. I'm lusting for more power so the only path is return fuel conversion, cams, built AEB head, and icing on the cake is a large port mani.

I contacted 3zero3 motorsports because I purchased my turbo back exhaust from them and was very satisfied with their customer service and the speed in which it was received, so I thought I would give them another shot. I was in contact with Nik who is a very cool guy. We talked about my purchase as well as other things. All in all a very pleasant conversation. I had questions about the manifold in which he was very accommodating in talking to Apikol to get all the answers I needed. Happy I decided to pull the trigger.

1/2/18 the manifold was shipped out directly from me to Apikol and tracking was sent to Nik at 3zero3. It was received by Apikol on 1/4/18 and promptly I got a email from Nik confirming it had arrived. The next email I received was 1/11/18 from Nik stating that Apikol was starting on it and should be sent out early of the next week. I'm super excited knowing I'll get my piece of engine jewelry very soon. I asked Nik for photos from Apikol so I can admire the intake and see what I will be getting in a couple days. 1/16/18 Nik emails me letting me know it's being shipped today and here's the tracking info. He also did state that Apikol did not send him photos of the mani. I was disappointed but I didn't think much of it at the time.

1/23/18. Here's where my nightmare began.
The manifold arrives! I eagerly open the box like it's Christmas day and I'm hit with the disappointment when I first look at it. As far as the craftsmanship I thought it looked really well put together. I called Nik immediately and told him the state of the mani and sent him pictures. He was in contact with Apikol very quickly in which they were saying it had to be scratched up in shipping and wanted pictures of every angle of the box as it was received. I complied to every request. I was told by Nik that Apikol was denying that the box I had was the box they shipped the manifold in. Apikol was initially pointing the finger at UPS saying they had opened the box and repackaged it. I told Nik what I had thought about the situation which was there is absolutely no damage to the box and even found a USPS unused folded box at the bottom of the shipping box. I told Nik it seemed like they were trying whatever they can to get out of it. This went on for a few hours up to the end of the day and we called it a night, he stated he would get back to me tomorrow. I received an email the next day stating Apikol is taking no responsibility for this because they have had issues in the past of people deliberately "sabotaging" products. I was instructed I can go through UPS insurance but since there was no damage to the box they didn't think UPS would accept it (tried and UPS wouldn't accept it.) As a consolation prize I guess.. Nik did state if I ever bought something from Apikol again they could work some kind of deal. That's the only remedy that was given to me. I went back and forth with Nik pleading my case that I didn't damage this manifold or "sabotage" it in any way. I went as far as to tell him I have time stamps from the time of the delivery to the time I called Nik at 3zero3 was 10-12 minutes (I have phone records to prove.)

What makes this whole situation fishy to me is, a conversation I had with Nik before my purchase is he told me the owner of Apikol used to work for 3zero3 (didn't know they were within driving distance from each other) and considered each other "family". Now I have a scratched up manifold and from Nik stated his hands are tied because Apikol says it wasn't sent like that when it clearly was. Nik can't do anything because he's just a online sales guy but I feel like the 3zero3 as a company failed me. This all could been avoided had Apikol sent photos to Nik like I requested to begin with. I'm stuck paying someone to take all the scratches out of a newly made manifold, roughly a couple hundred bucks. Wish I just bought a IE manifold before it was discontinued. I hope this helps someone in the future. I really can't recommend either of these companies, although Nik was awesome to deal with. I hate to even post what happened because I do like the guy. Anyways that's the end of my rant.

yea that looks bad. Did you try to see if they would be willing to cover the cost of powder coating? Cant be that much.

^ What Matt said. I would just powder coat it (whether they cover/contribute to it or not). Still it sucks you have to do that at all. Their fabricator has to clean the garbage and debris off their bench before working on the next piece. That just smacks of laziness and poor shop hygiene.

I amazed that they were so unwilling to do anything for you. I guess some companies are still living in the past, where photos and stories like this didn't spread at the speed of the internet. Their loss in the long run. After reading your post they are on my list of companies (both of them) not to deal with. I won't be the only one. Thanks for sharing.

I tried to get 3zero3 to help in anyway. Per Nik, asking Apikol to help is out of the question. That bridge has pretty much been burned. They have pretty much pointed the finger directly at me. I don't really understand if they shipped it to me, why do "I" have to go through UPS insurance. Isn't that why you pay for insurance upon shipping to your customers? I can only think they probably opted not to have insurance on it to save money. I called a metal finish company and naturally they want to polish the whole mani to a mirror finish. I have been quoted 5-8 hours on the whole manifold, and 2 hours on polishing the plenum. I haven't contacted anyone who powercoats (don't know any local, would have to be shipped) I have no idea what something like that would cost.

EDIT : Shops labor rate for the polish is $45/hr. So the whole mani roughly $480 for 8 hours, and about 100 for just the top part of the plenum.

A few shops have looked at it and the lowest i've been quoted is 2 hours for just the top part of the plenum.

Polishing is going to cost an arm and a leg. I would just go wrinkle black/red/silver powder coat. The IE ones had a wrinkly black option when they sold it that looked great

I would keep pressing Apikol. That's BS that you have to deal with this and potentially pay hundreds of dollars extra to get it straightened out. I'd be calling their business every day until they had a solution I was happy with. If you paid with a credit card then I'd be in touch with the credit card company.

Yeah, that looks like $hit. Any company that values it's name would at least attempt to accommodate in some capacity, it's part of the cost of doing business. If you paid with your credit card/pay-pal, start a claim, hands will magically become un-tied.

For powder coating in Denver, I've heard good things about both Pristine or ColorWerks, but I haven't personally used either yet. Also, I'd suggest Bluewater Performance, Berg Performance, or Hardey's MotorWerks for future needs.

I am currently trying to right now. After reaching out to Apikol, I was told info received from Nik was that the big circle was a dent not scratches. I was in total agreement that if it was dented like that, then it would be a UPS insurance claim. They still insist that it didn't leave that way and I need to go through UPS claims. Problem is there is no visible damage to the box and telling me UPS didn't open the box during transit they can't help me at all. It's been a back and forth situation from the start and I really get the vibe I'm wasting my time trying to deal with Apikol. Even bringing up the idea of polishing gets stopped by interrupting and fast talking, telling me that they don't ever polish them directing me to Lowe's for cheap steel wool to take the imperfections out. At this point I know I'm not going to get any help from any side so I'm going to take care of it myself. Either by paying a pro for powder coating or polishing the whole manifold with runners to a mirror finish.

They sound like dicks. They could easily have you send back and re polish ignore out for you. My vote is to powder coat. Will look more oem+ and will last longer than a polished finish

Going by the location under your username, Renewed Finishes is fairly close to you. He's based in PA.

I had a set of B6 S4 mirrors shipped to him for a brushed and powder clear coat. His prices are very fair. I paid about $100 to have the pair done. So should be about the same or cheaper for just powder.

He has a website, but posts a lot of his work to instagram: Clicky Click

oh...wuuuut?! that sucks. i dunno why IE makes parts that sell out then have zero plans to make a new run. Why not even just make a larger run upfront as their B6 parts always sell out.

wev've all been pushing IE to bring back the manifolds and cams for years now. It is getting annoying that they blame is on metal suppliers when the reality is that they care more about the b8 b9 mk7 community.

The last time I spoke to Tyler at IE, he told me the issue why their cams are on back order is the company who was grinding them had quality control issues and the material they used was not satisfactory with IE standards.

I’ve dealt with Apikol in person a few years ago. As far as I’m concerned they would never let something go out the door like this. Wonder what happened?

As far as powder pricing goes, that seems really high. I would shop around. I usually pay $60-80 for sets of brakes and I just payed $190 to have the valve covers and intake manifold coated for my 2.7t

if Blox Racing can have Skunk2 intake manifolds and camshafts copied/remade with their branding on them with higher than OEM standards out of Taiwan whatever hoopla IE spits to us is just a waste of breath. they are like Eurodyne, and keep moving onto the next platform because it makes them more money than continuing to support older platforms. they can charge top dollar and don't have to deal with people haggling with them since it is a new car and they themselves set the pricing.
