Anyone break the 300k mile mark in here?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,

As the post says, looking to see if any B6s (1.8T specifically) can last up to 300k? I see quite a few of you in the ~200k ranges, so that's good to know. And, I know good ol' Fletcher (CyberMPG) is way past 300K miles on his car...so I know it can be done.

Who else here has broken the 300k mile mark?

    Thanks,
    Asif

Road salt pretty much destroys vehicles where I live. Generally starts around 100k and then by 200k your holding the hood, doors, and trunk down with bungy cords and praying the gas tank doesn't fall out.

We have road salt and brine like nuts here. The body holds up decent but you need to be on top of cleaning it and such. I'm at 302 000 km

Mostly oil changes, timing belts, water pumps, coolant flushes, replacement of most rubber hoses on the engine and pcv system, coolant flanges, coils, plugs, oil feed line, turbo, valve cover and tensioner gaskets, fuel pump, clutches and some wiring repairs.Mostly common repairs on this particular car.Everything still works. However the goal is to hit 500k then swap out the engine for the one I have on the stand waiting patiently.

    Very impressive.

Is that original piston rings and cylinder head? It would be very interesting to get compression/leakdown specs on it with all those miles.

And how many times has the oil pickup screen been cleaned out?

All original engine, turbo was replaced other than that.It has original pistons, rings you name it.Head as well.I dont think the compression and leak down specs will be anything impressive.I can tell the engine has a some blowby. If I get the chance I will do a compression and leak down test and post the results.Oil pick up was cleaned at 60k.However I do my oil changes religiously every 3k miles.Always used castol edge 5w40 never had any issues with oil pressure or lights.

My car is an odometer fraud car with a minimum offset of 31k (bought at 144 on cluster, 175k was last service record on carfax). Just hit 170k so that puts me over the 200k mark now.

I replaced the motor due to a bad head gasket. Gasket could have easily been changed, but I had a super low mile motor w/ IE rods in it sitting around.

    Other major service:
    Clutch kit
turbo CHRA replacement - due to noise not burning oil.
    front suspension complete rebuild
    partial rear suspension rebuild
    coolant system refresh
Exhaust Y pipe failed twice. Replaced with turboback.
heater core- this job wasn't bad, but it was abnormal so I figured I'd mention it.

Due to spending 1k to 1.5k recently on this thing I plan on keeping it another 2 years even though I'm very bored of it. Probably one of the best VAG cars I've owned to date as far as comfort, drivability and reliability go. I feel like half the repair work I've performed I did not have to, but I'm a preventative maintenance guy. I noticed my control arms had slop in them when I was doing something else so I replaced them all. The car drives the same as before. The original motor and clutch could have stayed in it just grabbed high which I hated.

Small things are starting to get to me. My passenger S4 seat back is loose so the headrest shakes at idle (drives me insane). The drivers S4 seat adjustable thigh support moves ever so slightly and I notice it pretty much everyday. Passenger H&R Strut needs to be replaced (it rattles)- I just have to make the time to do it. The brand new Myle rotors I put on 3k ago have warped already, but FCP sent me free replacements, etc, etc - sorry for the rant!

    Just rolled past 366k miles.

Very impressed with the other high miles. My original motor gave out at 273k miles and replaced it with a factory refreshed engine while also having the transmission rebuilt and gears cryo treated. It's been a lot of leak hunts and fixes (oil and coolant) over the past two years. Oh... my miles are actually about 2k higher. Had the ABS controller out to be rebuilt. While it was out, I continued driving, but had no functional speedometer, odometer, trip odometer, cruise control, etc.

504k on it now, original motor and transmission. I'm getting ready to swap engines soon. As mentioned previously I will do a compression and leak down test before I pull the engine. I will also say that the vehicle in question has been daily driven by me and me only for the last 14 years and alot of the miles are hard miles on the car. What are hard miles you say?? Well its a good mix or highway and town driving probably around 60-40 split mostly under heavy load at all times whenever possible. I drive this car hard like I stole it, I only use premium fuel nothing else and oil changes are done every 3k with synthetic oil. It is stock however I beat it to death every day. So I am curious what the results will be. I will be posting those hopefully in this thread. Stay tuned probably around late march to mid april I hope. As long as all my parts to complete the swap fit right and everything goes off without any issues.

200K. Thanks to road salt and the newer 'brine' road treatments, the body will never make it to 300K.

Rust bubbling under drivers front fender at top of wheel arch and getting bad on the rear passenger fender at the very bottom.

Having recently removed front fenders from a parts car, I recently posted about the cause of front fender rusting. In short, get those splash shields out and power wash in there. Then take the fenders off and treat the rusted areas if they're still salvageable.

if it's not that, then sun damage will fade the paint and require a respray.
FWIW, a used front fender can be had for $50.

Those 12V Vr6s are such awesome engines. I have such great memories of my wife's old Mk3 GLX 5-speed. At least until the rust started to make all the trim fall off.

196k here, with 60k of those miles put on by me over the last 4ish years. I also drive my car hard, and it doesn't skip a beat (aside from a crank sensor and wastegate diaphragm). I chalk it up to maintenance by me and the previous owner, who as far as I know was an Audi enthusiast as well and did most of the mods when the car was only a few years old (APR 1+ tune, ECS RA4 clutch kit, stainless lines, etc).

I'm at 249K+. Original motor lasted until 200K until I lost oil pressure from a clogged pickup tube. I got 180K+ out of the original clutch. 220K+ out of the original trans before the center diff blew. The original turbo lasted about 215K+ Still on the original fuel pump, prop shaft, and rear end.

I've had my ups and downs with the vehicle but I've learned so much and I still get enjoyment out of it. I just wish the midwest climate was nicer on the body/chassis as it's starting to show some exterior rust and the underside is getting pretty rough.

    This is scaring me
I didn't know this could happen. Did it just clog on it's own?
Is running a quality synthetic oil such as Rotella T6 not good enough to slowly clean the engine?

The pickup tube is cheap and servicing that seems like a good idea, but I hear removing the upper oil pan or something is really difficult, possibly requiring a subframe drop and engine support from above

Did not know center diffs can go bad. I hear running different wear amount tires can wear it out, such as front bald tires and rear new tires.
