    Trans slipping in reverse

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all -

My 2017 S6 with only 3K miles on it is experiencing slipping when in reverse. In reverse, car will creep backward at idle, but stabs of the gas just result in engine revving and not much rearward momentum. Forward gears all are OK as far as I can tell.

I don't know much about the DSG gearboxes in these cars; is this normal behavior (I wouldn't think so)? Also, FWIW, no codes......

Between this and the bad sensor in my rear bumper, my ownership experience hasn't been great. It really sucks, because otherwise I really enjoy driving the car!!

Your opinions/comments, as always, are appreciated!

    Larry

That is very strange behavior. I've never experienced that nor have I heard of others experiencing slippage in reverse.

Yeah, the dealer told me it was strange that the ACC sensor in the rear bumper failed as well. Starting to sound like a broken record with this car.....sigh.

Hopefully you are not left foot braking when in reverse, wife had this problem with reverse, until she stopped left foot braking in reverse on the S6.

There’s a plethora of threads here about common DSG quirks and issues... especially from the B8 S4 guys. It is persists I would get it back to a dealer immediately. See if they can replicate it, which can be hard sometimes because it’s usually from a cold start I’m guessing. So maybe leave it overnight. I have not heard of it much on this platform but it’s certainly not impossible. If you look up DSG Gearbox Malfunction on here you’ll see what I’m talking about. Best of luck!

Are you on a Hill per chance? Is the hill assist not functioning?

No LF braking, no hill. Happens randomly on level ground. Sounds like another trip to the dealer - will let everyone know what happens when I take it in.

I just had my car returned from the dealer after having the mechatronic replaced and software updates. I'm getting a noticeable delay in gear engagement when going from drive to reverse, or reverse to drive. I was wondering if Audi's latest software version is putting some protections in place from shifting from drive to reverse too abruptly, and that maybe that slight lag is intentional. Otherwise, I'm possibly in the same situation with taking it back. Very frustrating.

@DaddyO: how much miles on the car? Might want to have the trans recalibrated.

3,000 miles. Car is only 5 months old. Very disappointed to be having problems like these on a new car, let alone one with a MSRP north of $80K. Guess we'll see what my new BFF at the dealer has to say....

If it's a new car and your the first owner you may want to look into lemon laws. Something is wrong with that particular car, it's certainly not the norm.

SDG definitely has idiosyncrasies. If this is your first dual-clutch vehicle I would encourage you to do what one of the other people suggested and familiarize yourself with how this gearbox can behave at times. All that said I will tell you that I had one of the first six-speed Tiptronic cars (Touareg) back in 04, and an 07 SDG, ( GTI) and both exhibited similar characteristics in that they would not not allow one to get in a hurry when going from forward to reverse or vice versa. You could not slide the car from reverse to drive unless you came to a virtual stop because of the software. I do think that they build a lag in to address front forward motion to rearward motion to protect the gearbox. I'm not suggesting that you're not smart enough to know how to shift your car. And you may very well have a real issue but these gearboxes to have some funny little tenancies. I also have an 01 2.7 T allroad with a 5-speed Tiptronic and it had a horrible (at least to me) lag issue immediately from a stop until I put a GIAC TCU chip in it when I chipped the engines ECU as well. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Sounds normal to me. My car has done that since day 1 and I'm at 17k, plus my S3 did the same exact thing. Think of it as if you're driving a stick and slipping the clutch a bit when reversing. Never bothered me, just something to get used to with a dual clutch transmission.

Hate to bring up an old thread, but I am having exact same issue as the OP. All gears seem to work fine, except slippage in reverse. No codes, or other issues. Albeit its a 2013 S5, but likely the same trans.

DaddyO, did you ever find the root cause of the issue?

Pretty much just the nature of the DSG. You'll also notice going from D to R it won't let you do so in a hurry.

Nope. Dealer says no trouble found. Car now has 15K miles and is pretty much a garage queen these days. Still slips in R on occasion. Thinking of selling it if the price was right since I just don't drive it much anymore.
