Stock Dual Mass Flywheel Torque Limit?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I'm researching clutch and FW kits for a 1.8T big turbo build and I'm looking at South Bend stage 3 clutch kits with rigid disk to allow use of the stock DMFW. The single mass FW upgrade seems better but also costs an extra $375 for the build. I'm liking the idea of using the stock flywheel assuming its still in good shape. But does anyone know how much power the dual mass flywheel can take? I can't seem to find any threads talking about this. I have seen a few of the A4 B6 guys running FX400 6 pucks with stock DMFW at 370-400+ HP a few years ago but can't find any threads about their DMFW failing or anything.

Anyone have any experience that they can add?

A stock DM can be shock damaged by repeated hard launches with even stock output.

It may not fail completely, but the rubber blocks between the 2 sections wear, causing either vibration, knocking or a combination of both. I would go with a single mass flywheel, and not an aluminium one with a steel insert bolted to it.

Listen to Nolly. I have killed my DMFW with a lowly F21L. Vibration central now. Going to swap it out once the temperatures hit positive. SMF all the way.

You want a steel single mass flywheel that around 18-19 pounds.I would recommend TTV over the pond.I had a flywheel made by them for my project.Bolts up to a 1.8T but accepts B5 RS4 clutch disk and pressure plate. That with a 01e transmission and you got yourself a bulletproof setup.

I never had any problems with my DMFW and I had 400awtq going through it.

My driving habits did not induce any shocks into the drivetrain though such as a launch.

420+ awtq on a 2.7t with an OEM DMFW (likely quite similar to the 1.8t design) without issues.

It doesn’t mean DM flywheels will fail with big power in front of them. It’s that they are more prone to failure than SM ones in the same conditions.

Both can wear on the friction surfaces, but only the DM can fail between the 2 assemblies. So, 2 points of failure, versus one for the SM version.

    It’s a scientific fact.

    @ OP
SM FW is the way to go. just run a heavy steal SM and it will still have an "OEM feel" with the right disk.
Note I had a FX400 (6puck) and it only lasted about 20k, hard driving, launching and Rallyx +GT2860rs was part of it i'm sure but that's what its made for, right? <<<--My $.02

Quick update, thanks for the input everyone. I've decided to go with the SMF with the clutch upgrade since its one less thing to worry about and the option to resurface it instead of replace down the road.

    Cheers!
