2016 S6 vs 2017 RS7: head to head dyno results!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    All,
Limeypride and I had the opportunity to put our cars through their paces on the same dyno on the same day for comparison purposes.
The cars and their relevant mods:
    1) 2016 S6, APR Stage 3 (93 file), with RS7 turbos, APR downpipes, AMS intercooler, AWE S-flo intake, MRC carbon fiber turbo inlets, and AWE touring exhaust
    2) 2017 RS7 Performance, APR Stage 2 tune (93 file and later the 100 file), with Akropovic exhaust (OEM as part of the titanium package) and AWE S-flo intake

The conditions: Ambient pressure 1012hpa (approx. at sea level), ambient temp 12C/54F
The dyno: Dynojet AWD, 424XLC2, Drift-Office, Auburn, WA

    The S6:

Several 4th gear pulls were performed, with the best 2 runs as follows:

Relevant logging data from the last 4th gear pull (with whp of 620 and torque of 605 ft-lbs):

    Now for limeypride’s RS7!

Limeypride performed dyno runs in 4th and 5th gear on a 93 file as well as a final 5th gear run on the 100 file. His best runs of each in that order were as follows:

The log data for limeypride’s 4th gear pull (93 file) are graphed here:

The log data for limeypride’s 5th gear pull (100 file):

    Observations:
First, this is obviously dyno data, and not time slips, so take them for what they’re worth—we had a lot of fun doing it and found the results make for interesting discussion. At the very least, there is comparative value between the 2 cars, since the runs were done on the same dyno at approximately the same time and under the exact same conditions.

As expected, the RS7 performed exceptionally! The APR Stage 2 tune even with stock downpipes did not disappoint, demonstrating 625whp and 713ft-lbs of torque during its best 4th gear pull (93 file), 621whp and 739ft-Ibs of torque for its best 5th gear pull (93 file) and 640whp and 743ft-lbs of torque during its final 5th gear pull (100 file)!

Of note, the APR tunes for both cars delivered actual boost quite close to the requested boost. Impressively, the RS7 both requested and delivered a boost of 29psi on each of its runs. The S6, with its Stage 3 93 file, both requested and delivered an actual boost of 23psi during its runs, despite the presence of the same exact RS7 turbos. This may potentially be a reflection of a conservative APR Stage 3 tune.

Also of note, during the 4th gear pulls and 93 files, the S6 delivered 620whp, nearly mirroring the whp of the RS7. Where the RS7 really shone was in its torque production: 739ft-lbs in 5th gear (93 file) and 743ft-lbs in 5th gear (100 file)!

As for temps, coolant temp hovered around 100C for both cars at the end of all runs, with the oil temp slightly lower for the S6 at the end of the runs at 92C.
For Intake Air Temps, the highest seen by the S6 was 42C, from a starting temp of 34.5C(on the final of 5 4th gear runs). In contrast, the RS7 had a starting intake air temp of 44C, with a high of 58.5C during the last 4th gear run.

    Takeaways:
The RS7 Performance is clearly a beast, and the simple edition of an ECU tune shows excellent power and torque.
For each car, the APR tunes both requested and delivered boost with a very minimal to no delta between the 2 variables.
A highly modified S6 with Stage 3 software can provide significant gains in horsepower over stock, and in this instance demonstrated horsepower close to the RS7 on 93file, but the torque of the RS7 remains much higher than the S6.
Caveats: per common lore, dyno runs are typically taken using the gear with a 1:1 ratio. For the RS7, that’s 6th gear. We were advised to use a lower gear since the run-time of a 6th gear pull (being much longer) might cause the results to suffer from heat soak.
Also, the fuel for the S6 was WA 92 octane (12 gallons) mixed with 3 gallons of e85. For the RS7, all runs were done using 4 gallons of WA 92 octane with 32 oz of a race concentrate additive; this one:

Finally, a shot of the Pacific NorthWest Mythos Black Audi Club: (jsilas was with us today). All 3 of us are stupid enough to own black cars in the land of perpetual rain! We hope to get a track day in sometime in the next 6 months once we see the sun again…

Many thanks to limeypride and jsilas for their input and pics during this process!

Wow, thanks for sharing, the torque difference is hugh between RS7 and stage 3 S6.

Great data. Did anyone check to ensure there was no timing retard? As expected, the RS7 boost curve is nuts. My S8 hits similar peaks, but not as quickly.

Yes, for a few of the runs we were able to verify that there wasn't any evidence of cylinder timing retardation, even including the 100 file for the RS7.

Im interested to know if adding downpipes would lower the temp on the RS7. Also will it bring the HP or TQ up as well? Does AMS cooler work for Rs7?

Last question is, how do you request for Stage 2 tune without downpipes from APR? I already bought Stage 1 tune, I heard Stage 2 comes free with downpipes but not sure if I want them.

I wonder how close the S6 boost pressure will get to the RS7 levels given the higher compression ratio of the S6 engine.

I'm considering adding the DPs; need to chat to Mickey (since he's added my OEM exhaust to his S6 and can help me answer questions the manufacturer won't/can't).

No drone; just lots of raucous exhaust and plenty of snap, crackle and pop (more crackle and pop mostly).

Assuming you mean RS7s, I'm not sure what stage 3 would equate to but I'm sure I'd be interested .

If APR updates a tune you have already purchased, you do not have to pay them for the updated file. Just go to your APR dealer and update.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I'm curious about APR actually updating their stage 3 file for more power for the first time since they released it.

I'm not interested in the APR DPs. I want to go for something with a 3" diameter if possible + hi-flow cats. I believe the AMS DPs Mickey has measure up. So the question is, will the AMS DPs mate naturally (without fab work or hack saws and the like) to my Akra section? I believe so but even AMS themselves won't say for sure nor will they accept the DPs as a return if they don't fit... grrrr. I have detailed pics and videos of the exhaust setup of my car and am looking to compare. I was planning to call Mickey earlier today but the day got away from me.

    Any insights?

    Thanks.

I can tell you that at least for both Mickey and nefkntym, their AMS downpipes mated up perfectly with the end-to-end connections to their new Akra exhausts. I am unaware however, if there is a difference between the Akra exhaust for the S6 vs the Akra exhaust for the RS7.

To the best of my knowledge, downpipes are recommended at Stage 2 to help decrease the resistance to flow of the the hotter exhaust gases, and that there is some concern that using the stock downpipes can cause added heat that can potentially damage the stock cats.
I am unaware of aftermarket intercoolers for the RS7, as it already has much better OEM cooling than the S6.

Regarding the APR downpipes, I don’t blame you on not being interested in them. I had them for about 10 days. Not my cup of tea, do I replaced them with AMS downpipes after 2 weeks. Having to hack your existing exhaust is even more of a reason to pass.

I wondered about the difference between the S6/S7 and RS7 Akra exhaust as well other the tips of course. As for mating the two, absolutely no issues, no cutting, hacking, grinding or cursing. AMS downpipes are awesome, especially in that regard. As for the RS, about a month ago I was seriously considering replacing my S6 with an RS7. With that I wanted to swap downpipes over, I talked to AMS and got the same non-conclusive answer. So I started doing my own research on the Audi side. If you were to buy stock downpipes right now for the S6, S7, RS7, A8 or S8 they would all have the same part number for both left and right respectively. Found that tidbit out perusing the online parts catalog, called a local dealer parts dept with the part numbers and asked what application it was for. I was told the same thing. Hopefully that helps.

The part #'s are identical stock - I mentioned on another thread I'm not sure why DP's are required on stage 2 S6's considering the same DP's work fine on an RS that's pushing comparable boost and maybe slightly more power - even at stage 1 levels the RS seems to work fine with stock DP's, as evidenced by my stage 1 times and traps.

This is my only hesitation to tell Dean that the AMS pipes will work with his car.

Aaron has done more research regarding part numbers than I have and it seems to point to the direction of everything fitting fine.

Dean, the only thing I can tell you is that Aaron and I both experienced zero issues with an AMS to Akra setup. In fact, according to my mechanic, he said the fitment was sublime. I would think it would be the same for you but the fact is, I haven't seen an RS7 car go that route as of yet so we cannot be 100% sure.

Dean, get the DPs. Worst case scenario is that, against all available info, they don’t fit, at which point you sell them to someone here on the forums for hopefully near-zero loss. The upside seems worth the minimal risk to me.

Dean, I’d buy them off you if you don’t want/like the AMS downpipes- wouldn’t even need to ship them

Nice! Looks like there is room for more power on the S6. APR may be tuning conservatively due to the higher compression ratio or DSG. Hopefully they will work with you guys to turn up the boost a bit.
