    Oil Filter Housing Gasket Sealer?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm changing out my oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket. I am wondering what compound would be recommended or that you guys have used for this that works? I have looked around and some people have said Permatex Ultra Black... But it says it's a gasket maker. What difference would it be a to use a gasket maker vs sealer?

Same thing I believe. I used Permatex Ultra black to seal up my sunroof delete panel.

You do not use any gasket maker or RTV when replacing these.. and to save yourself future headache just replace the whole housing. 90$ from ECS https://www.ecstuning.com/b-uro-part...6f115397h~uro/ and this has both gaskets pre installed. I’ve used it a few times in the past with no issues, and doing another replacement this weekend. Might even include a filter too, can’t remember.

Well damn, didn't think the whole housing would be that cheap. I spent the much on oem gaskets afraid the cheap after market gasket wouldn't be no good.

So no sealant or gasket maker used? Just clean everything good and replace gasket?

I would stick to OEM when it come to the housing. I know it's expensive but it's not something you want to be doing twice.

Yeah price isn’t bad at all. Granted it’s not OEM, but Works just the same.. And a lot cheaper.

No sealant. Just wipe down engine block and oil cooler surface with a clean rag, and a shot of brake clean

I wouldn't say it works the same. I just went through replacing a coolant flange and a window regulator most likely because they were aftermarket. Now I can't prove that is why they failed so soon, but most likely. The coolant flange lasted 2 years and the window regulator lasted a year. I went OEM this time and I would wager to say they last much longer this time around.

I re-installed my OEM ( wasn't leaking previously ) using NO sealant but new gasket. No leaks. That's the way to go but make sure mating surface on block is scotch brited and residue removed,no oils,no sealant and torqued evenly and to spec.

No compound needed. Gaskets are enough. Just stick with OEM housing.

The part itself works the exact same.. and I am just sharing my experience. Maybe it won’t last quite as long as OEM, but only time will tell. Out of the 3 I’ve used over the years they’re holding up just fine, so to me there’s no reason to spend triple the price for OEM when it comes to this.

Whichever brand OP decides, he’ll have no issues.

Just bought the housing assembly as mine was disintegrated in one area and leaking oil. Cheapest I could find for OEM: https://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-VOLKSWAG...19.m1438.l2649

Yeh I ended up buying the $90 housing off of Ecs. Old gasket was so hard trying to pry it out I ended up cracking the housing. So far no leaks.

Looks exactly the same as oem, don't see no difference as why it would not last as long, I did use the oem gaskets that I had originally bought instead of the ones it comes with.

turns out this housing assembly is missing the sensor - otherwise it's an identical part... nonetheless, incorrect and i apologize for posting this link. Somebody else posted it and I used it thinking it was good to go. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

The sensor is not missing, its a separate part that will never be included when purchasing the housing. Doesn’t matter if you buy it from eBay or Audi dealership.
